I started coming to Dr. Barrett when I was pregnant with my son. I knew once I met her and Dr Speyer that this is where I wanted to stay as a patient during pregnancy and afterwards. I felt like any concern I had was addressed at every appointment, and that these are two women who would keep my baby and I safe throughout the pregnancy and delivery. Dr Barrett ended up delivering my son, and I couldn't have asked for a better delivery and post-partum care from her. Since then, I've only seen Dr Barrett and have been through some very rough times that she has helped me through. I have been a patient of Dr. Barrett for over 18 years. She has cared for me and delivered 4 of my babies as well as other health issues that have come up over the years. First and foremost the intelligence and understanding of her profession is outstanding. But what truly makes her stand out is her excellent bedside manner and true understanding and passion for her patients needs. This practice focuses on making each patient their top priority in every respect. My wife has had both Dr. Speyer and Dr. Barrett as her OBGYN for her last two births. Both deliveries were via C-Section; one was scheduled and the other was during contractions at 2AM. Both doctors absolutely rank among the best OBs in the field and in the Northern Virginia area. My wife and our babies had the best care we could have hoped for. The office staff are always friendly, helpful, and accommodating especially when we've had to bring our kids in with us to an appointment. Lisa, the billing manager, is very knowledgeable and understanding, and will stand up for the patients. The entire process was stress-free for both myself and my wife. I have been with Dr. Barrett for a number of years and truly have nothing but good to say. I have been to both offices though I do prefer the Sterling one due to my home and work locations. She did my hysterectomy 3 years ago and everything went as smoothly as I could have hoped for. She has a warm friendly bedside manner and her sense of humour just put me at ease. Hate superior stuffy doctors that just don't listen to me. This is my body, I carry it around all day so if I am saying something is off....get a clue something is off. I am writing this update for two appointments that I had in June/July. Each time I see Dr. Barrett I am impressed with her bedside manner, but I have to take stars off for making me wait... and wait... and wait. I get that they have emergencies and can't always be right on time, but thinking back, I never waited less than 30 minutes (after appt start time) for her to come into my room. Again, she's a great doctor and I would be happy to see her, but the wait can be a bit of a bear. read more

Easily the worst OBGYN my wife and I had to deal with. We have three kids and our first one was with Dr. Diane Barrett. It was an ok experience before the delivery. On delivery day our doctor was not even there, understandable, but the delivery was not straight forward and there were complications. After the delivery Dr Dianne did not even call or checkup how everything went. We did not make that mistake the next two times. If you love your wife don't go to Dr Dianne because she only cares about getting paid and does not care about how your pregnancy goes. This is our personal experience so if other people had good experiences then good for them, but I would never go to her and would never want any of my loved ones to go to her. read more

I hadn't been for a woman's health check in years due to insurance - I searched online and found Dr. Barrett's office. What an amazing experience! I called the office and the front desk staff was so warm and kind. When I met Dr. Barrett, I just couldn't believe how much time she spent with me - it was like sitting down for a cup of coffee and chatting - she listened and recommended and explained the next steps. She made me feel so comfortable! Then when I called the office month's later to discuss billing, Lisa - the office manager, was just as helpful and considerate - no rushing me off the phone and really found solutions to my inquiry - I will definitely recommend this practice to friends! I'll say the same thing I said in Dr. Speyer's review - I'm surprised by how low the ratings are; however, I do understand people feel more inclined to share negative experiences over positive ones. Dr. Barrett has been nothing but professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. This happened in 2009 still very fresh on my mind. I had complete placenta previa, and Dr Dianne Barrett was my OBGYN. I went to see her in Reston because I was spotting, she examined me, and did not ever tell me to be on a bed rest. Very casually told me to take it easy. I asked her if she could my spotting she asked me in a rude way, see what? I left her office and kept doing my normal work and even went to the gym until at 21 weeks, I started bleeding heavily because my placenta broke and we had to call 911. Thanks to the amazing doctor on call at the Loudoun birthing inn that night my baby was saved. I will never ever forget those days which could have been avoided if the doctor cared about her patient. My baby was eventually born at 34 weeks, but my new OBGYN took amazing care of us. read more

I had my first visit with Dr. Barrett and I have to say she was wonderful. I especially loved that I could have a conversation about my concerns in an office (and not in those OB/GYN chairs with my legs propped up). She listened. She understood by hesitations and suggested alternate solutions. I do wish the office had an EMR (Electronic Medical Record) instead of charts and papers but that has more to do with the practice is run and is not a reflection on Dr. Barrett. read more

If you value your time and your money I would recommend looking for another ObGyn office. Also, if you know you do not want an unnecessary c-section, this is probably not the practice for you. I have had five visits in this office - 4 for prenatal check-ups ( 3 with Dr. Barrett, one with Dr. Speyer. I also had another initial appt with Dr. Mandolesi in Sterling) and one appointment for a blood draw. From my initial visit there was a lot of pressure from Dr. Barrett to have a sonogram to confirm my due date. I knew exactly when I got pregnant and my HCG levels, symptoms, missed periods, etc all supported that date. When I declined the sonogram Dr. Barrett really tried to pressure me and I told her my husband was against unnecessary sonograms (I thought I had made clear that we both were), especially because at this practice you have to schedule them with a separate imaging office, which is an added hassle. She asked me why I was letting him make the decisions. I explained I wasn't entirely, but he has say and I wasn't even going to discuss it without him there. Otherwise, she was very nice and bubbly and had a great bedside manner. She puts you at ease. Now the problems. Out of my five appointments, twice I was called to reschedule days before because the doctor would be in surgery. I scheduled these appointments weeks in advance. Two other times the doctor was delivering a baby that conflicted with my appointment. The first conflict time I rescheduled. The second time they pushed me to come in earlier in the day though I couldn't. I rescheduled for the following week, though I had scheduled my day around this initial appointment and had another Dr.'s appointment for not long after so that I could take advantage of being out of the office. Then they called a couple of days later, said the surgery had been canceled and did I want my old time slot back? Yes, please. Well, when I arrived after getting checked in and left in a room I was sent away because I was told the doctor was in a delivery. As I arrived back at the front desk to reschedule there were people just arriving for appointments who were rescheduled for appointments before me. They were offered times an hour and a half from that point and I had to reschedule for the next week. Again, a little disrespectful. This was the second time I had my appointment interrupted because of a delivery. The first time they gave me the option of waiting, and I did because I had already been there half an hour. When the doctor returned after another half an hour I heard her chatting with the staff about the delivery and giving them every detail before finally coming to see me. I thought that was a little disrespectful to keep me waiting even longer. (This was Dr. Barrett). Now, I know what you might be thinking. They're ObGyns. They do deliveries that aren't planned. I understand that, but I have never in 17 years and the birth of my first child been rescheduled or canceled because of another delivery. Either they are taking on too many clients or they are not properly scheduling appointments. Or, they just don't value your time. Whatever the reason, I'm paying for each appointment with sick leave or vacation time - and that is money out of my pocket and time lost for after the arrival of my child. The staff is not a real asset at this particular office. They are nice but not terribly professional or helpful. Also, the one time that I had a blood draw for two weeks after a check-up they insisted that I had to schedule with the doctor during that visit, though I really didn't think I had to. I tried to argue, but they had my chart right in front of them. On that blood draw visit I waited 35 minutes for Dr. Barrett before she told me as entering the room that she really didn't need to see me if all I needed was a blood draw. The nurse came in and said, "If you had told me you just needed a blood draw I could have had you in and out!" Another unnecessary frustration. Update: When I needed my records sent to the midwife I switched to the staff was super helpful and very nice. I would now give them a higher rating, if I could rate them separate from the Dr.s. The last reason I would caution people against seeing these doctors is that they have a disproportionately high c-section delivery rate. (Maybe that is what all of the scheduled surgeries are?) From what I was told it is about 50%! (The national average is around 30% and the WHO says it's 10% in other developed countries). That is one in every two women they care for delivering via c-section. Wow! read more

Do NOT go here!!!! I went to Doctor Barrett for 3 years... she was my OBGYN when i was pregnant with my first son and she accidentally broke my water while checking to see if i was dilated at my 38 week check up. When i got to the hospital they called her "Dr. Claw" because she does this so often!! I was in labor for 23 hours before my son was born because my body was just nowhere near ready to deliver when she broke my water. Now i am 21 weeks pregnant with my 2nd son and i just found out from a friend who also goes to her that she will no longer be accepting my insurance starting in 2 weeks. Nobody there told me anything!!!! She is supposed to be delivering my baby in 4 months and i was just there 2 weeks ago and nobody told me anything!!!!!! They also recently had a lot of turnover with their front desk staff and they are all very rude all the time. I repeat DO NOT GO HERE!!!! read more

I lost my unborn son at 32 weeks. I am writing about Dr. Mandolesi, Speyer and Barrett. I'm not blaming them totally for my loss but I can't help to think maybe it could have been prevented. Maybe if they informed me better would my son be here today... The reason why I came to Gariela Mandolesi was because she had such great reviews. I was already at the beginning of my second trimester when I found out I was pregnant, so I was already nervous about the whole pregnancy. I asked if it was ok to sleep on my back because I had a habit of falling asleep on my back and I read EVERYWHERE that it could be harmful to the baby. She told me it was fine and I could sleep on my back well into the third trimester of it was comfortable for me. So I continued to sleep on my back. I saw Gabriela Mandolesi maybe 3 times at the most then I ended up seeing Dr Speyer for the most of my appointments, I have met Dr Barrett maybe once. I've never been pregnant before and I assumed Mandolesi would be my doctor but she just disappeared. I noticed my baby wasn't moving as much and I was worried so I moved my appointment sooner. Dr. Speyer saw me and I told her I haven't felt my baby move in a while. So she went to go find the heart beat and she couldn't find anything. I was CRUSHED and confused. And all she could say was "we always tell you to come in if you haven't felt the baby move in 24 hours". NO, you or anyone did not tell me that! She couldn't even tell me my baby died. She just said go to labor and delivery and have them do an ultrasound to figure out what was happening. Even my husband was confused because she didn't give us any information. Because of that we had a little hope maybe our baby was still alive. I waited 2 hours in the delivery room before someone came in. The lady who did my ultrasound that I didn't even know was the one who told me my baby died. When I had to deliver my baby that died, Dr. Barrett was the one who was the one to do so. I only met her once before so I felt like a stranger was delivering my baby. My whole experience finding it my baby died and delivering him was a nightmare from HELL. After doing tremendous amounts of research and reading. I felt like these doctors did not inform me of the dangers and warning signs of stillbirths. Sleeping on your back was HUGE NO NO and was linked to stillbirths and NO ONE told me to go to the hospital if I didn't feel my baby move in 24 hours. I wonder every freaking day if my son would be here if they told me those things.... I did not even know what a stillbirth was until my baby died! My life's been forever changed and a piece of my soul died. And even after everything was done I never heard anything from the original Doctor Mandolesi I initially saw. No condolences, no kind words, no card, nothing. read more

My stepmom and I were both patients of Dr. Barrett and have since left. She personally has a good bedside manner, but her staff is frustrating to work with. I would consistently be on hold for 10 minutes any time I would call her office. When I finally got through it was always incredibly frustrating to deal with her receptionists. They were difficult and unfriendly when I would be trying to make appointments, and if I would need prescriptions refilled, they would never have access to my chats to know if they could authorize it, and I would never get calls back from Dr. Barrett. read more

Here's who I don't recommend: Dr. Diane Barrett. She has an office in Sterling and in Reston. Today I had an 8:40 am appointment with Ms. Diane Barrett. I took the day off of work instead of working the morning like I could have since this is the day before Thanksgiving. I arrived at my appointment 10 minutes early only to be told that Ms. Barrett is on vacation this week, and the front office girl wasn't sure if they had called any of her appointments or not. I informed her that they did not contact me to reschedule, that's why I had taken the day off of work and I was standing there right then, ready for my OBGYN appointment. She said the earliest that she can get me an appointment is 14 December. Believe it or not, this is the second time that this has happened with the same doctor. Last December I was scheduled for an appointment in their surgical office in Reston. I was already nervous because of the procedure I was about to have, but when I arrived they said Diane Barrett was not coming in that day so they would need to reschedule me a couple weeks later. I had taken the day off of work that day also. I can accept one time of there being some kind of miscommunication, but when this happens repeatedly, that means there is an issue. Diane Barrett does not respect my time as her customer, therefore she has completely lost a customer. I will not be back. read more

Dr. Barrett is great. After reading other posts, I want to say that I've never had any issues with billing or wait time. I love that she has two locations- Reston & Sterling. She is very friendly and quick with routine check ups! I've referred my fiancé's mother and most recently, my sister. read more

I really like Dr. Barrett and her staff. They are always helpful, if they need to reschedule an appointment, they let you know within a reasonable amount of time. I have visited both the Reston and Sterling offices. I have always tried to schedule my appointments first thing in the morning (they open at 8:30 some days) and never have to wait very long. read more

I've been seeing Drs. Barrett, Speyer, and Mandolesi for 6 years now, before my first pregnancy, and later through the birth of my daughter and my current pregnancy. I just love them. All three doctors are wonderfully patient, great about answering questions, and never make me feel rushed. When I went into labor with my daughter, I honestly had no preference as to who delivered me (Dr. Barrett). Re: delays, I've found that sometimes there can be delays at the Reston office, since whichever doctor is there also covers deliveries at the hospital. But in my six years that's only happened to me twice. And once, that delay was only about 20 minutes. If you're concerned about delivery-related delays, the Sterling office might be a better bet (they also have in-house ultrasound machines, so though they don't do diagnostic measurements there, they can check your estimated due date for early appointments etc). Re: c-sections, they never even mentioned them to me. I'm not sure where the stats on c-sections in their office come from, but I've had one of the docs mention patients who deliver naturally (no meds) as though that's perfectly routine for them. Most importantly to me, I've felt really confident in the care I've received. Each of the doctors has been very attentive and great about answering my questions. I had to see an MFM for a portion of this pregnancy, and that was my first experience with stressful OB offices, whereas Dr. B would always make me feel better when I saw her. Dr. Barrett is also a great catcher :) During delivery, my daughter actually went airborne for a second on her way out, and Dr. B caught her handily. I will love her forever for that! read more

I loved Dr. Barrett. She was very friendly and she has really good bedside manner but I am hesitate to go back. I just need to take away all of the stars she earned due to her staff specially her billing person. I had a soft copy of my insurance card with me and they wouldn't take it. I also let them talk to my insurance rep and they refused. So I follow their no insurance policy and paid out of pocket for ridiculous amount and now they are refused to pay back the difference of what insurance should cover. When I called to talk to a person took me an hour and when the billing person finally called me back she was so rude and unprofessional. So, if you still decide to go....be aware of the staff....not friendly at all and make sure you have all of your docs in hard copy. They are not in the 21 century with the system for sure. read more

Although I liked this doctor when I just needed an annual check-up I really regret trusting her with delivering my son. If you are pregnant or planning to have a baby do not be fooled by this doctors good bedside manners! I had my son in July 2016. It's May 2018 and my heart still hurts every time I think about that day and the way we were treated during my labor. Dr Barrett is outstanding. Very professional and gives you her undivided attention when she is with you. My one complaint I have is with the staff- dealing with some of the nurses is a pain. One of the older nurses in particular is always in a bad mood, although this seems to be a requisite for medical office staff no matter where I go;). For me, it's been worth it to wade through the BS of dealing with the staff to receive the attentive care of Dr Barrett. read more

Dude....I have NO clue how Dr. Barrett (and Dr. Speyer) has anything but 5 star reviews. They and their Sterling office team are incredible. I came from an previous OBGYN office that was, to say it politely, absolutely inept at doing anything well, kindly or correctly (**ahem** I'm looking at you Virginia Women's Health in Reston **ahem** and just mosey on over to my reviews to see and in DEPTH review on their office and my experience with them based on 5 years and 1 pregnancy). After a very stressful first pregnancy--largely due to consistently terrible experiences at my previous OBGYN--I decided enough was ENOUGH. Since my husband and I were deciding to get pregnant with our second child, I knew I needed to find another office. After visiting a few offices and not finding the right fit, my friend told me to visit her OBGYN: Dr. Barrett. That's when everything fell into place. I made an appointment with OB/GYN Associates at the Sterling office (Speyer/Barrett's Practice). I walked into a new and CLEAN office, I stated my name and the women at the front desk were so sweet and kind (a SHOCK as I had mild PTSD from years dealing with Dr. Hersh's office) and on my first visit, confirmed I was pregnant with my second child, walked out of my first visit with MANY congratulations, sonogram pictures and a very large gift bag filled with prenatal vitamins, information about pregnancy and various other things. It was the most pleasant pregnancy visit I had every had. Throughout the pregnancy, it continued that way. It was absolutely the best thing and took so much anxiety off my shoulders. NOT ONCE during my whole pregnancy did an appointment get canceled. NOT ONCE did any paperwork get filed incorrectly. NOT ONCE did I see anyone other than Dr. Barrett or Dr. Speyer (!!) (ladies, this is a big deal when you're pregnant. It is important to see your delivery doctor throughout your pregnancy. Something I didn't experience--NOT ONCE--with my previous OBGYN). Anytime I had any hesitancy about the health of my baby, they were there. Their office was speedy to respond and they were very reassuring in scary moments. Finally, when it was time to deliver, Dr. Barrett delivered my baby. She was there the whole time through the whole pregnancy...how it should be. I would choose this practice countless times again and I regret not finding them sooner. read more

I will finally be finding another doctor after going to Dr Barrett and the other doctors in the practice for many years. As I waited I heard her loudly discuss other patients and her plans the night before. Most appallingly, after my exam I went to the check out desk and I even heard her talking about me to the staff, in a voice loud enough to be heard by everyone in the full waiting room. When she eventually saw me there, she changed the subject.What about one of the basic aspects of healthcare- patient confidentiality?! Dr. Barrett came highly recommended. This review perhaps does not necessarily reflect her skills as a doctor however today I took my daughter for an appointment. I had left my forms at home by accident and when I checked in I told the receptionist I was sorry but I left the forms and my insurance card at home. She asked that I fill out new forms and could my husband fax or email the insurance card. I could not reach my husband and I was on the phone with my insurance company. Our appointment was at 2:15 by this point it was 2:45. I went back to receptionist to let her know I was still on hold with insurance company and my husband was not available she then informed me my daughter could not be checked in and I would have wait till I could show proof of insurance. I was completely floored. In all of my years in going to the doctor I have never been told we can't register you or see the doctor until they receive a copy of the insurance card. Why couldn't they have offered to call my insurance company or at least get us in to see the doctor while I was on hold with the insurance company. If all else failed I would paid out of pocket. It was a complete inconvenience to me and my daughter whom I had to pull out of school for nothing! Irony was I am suppose to go tomorrow to see the doctor and I told them to take me off the books I am not giving them my business!
