I couldn't tolerate the parking tickets on my registrations anymore so encouraged my wife to get her own car (she complained the car was too big and stuck out over the line-a crown vic frame car). After extensive search and some travel she found her used dream car a couple years ago and we have slowly been replacing worn parts, etc. I have been a private businessman in San Diego for the past 12 years. My experience with car mechanics goes back to my years in high school and college maintaining my father's and my own vehicles in the 1970's and early 1980's. I still do routine work on my Dodge and Ford and bought a Chilton's type manual for my wife's car to try and do the maintenance and understand what is what. The only thing I have been able to learn and do to my wife's car mechanically has been to take out the stupid spare tire so I could throw in an extra fire extinguisher, first aid kit, blanket, flares, that stuff. I am real good at cleaning the windows and the brake dust off the wheels but that is in the janitorial department of this household not worthy of mention here. I knew what expenses we were getting into buying this car and wanted to keep them staggered. For expertise on my wife's car, which she bought used almost two years ago, I consulted various specialized mechanics in San Diego after meeting their front office guy. I wanted to understand their standards of practice, certifications and training as well as a full walk through of their shop and parts inventory storage. I was amazed at the phony responses I got from certain front office guys. Really, just because they look good, talk the walk and dress the talk does not mean they know diddly about your particular vehicle. Well I found my mechanic and his chief mechanic first by my AAA membership, then meeting them and have them give me a look see over the car after we bought it which is a story in itself taking almost a month to close the deal. Before I met these gentlemen, we had taken the car to two other mechanics and conducted telephone inquiries of many others. This is not just a car to me. It is my wife's car. She smiles leaving the house and smiles when arrives at work and vice versa. I want the best available mechanics at my disposal to maintain my wife's car. David and Charlie are my mechanics and I have full faith and trust in their estimates, service and follow-ups. Since they took care of my emergency and did it right away, I'm going to share my experience. The good; 1. They got me in right away. Since my problem was with a gas leak, and I was an hour from home.. that was much appreciated. 2. They had the parts in stock,or got them super fast. With an older BMW, this isn't always the case. 3. They got the work done on time. 4. The prices were more than reasonable. Parts and labor. The bad; Nothing really. I wanted a patch job. They wouldn't do it. I wanted a fuel line replaced and the filter replaced. I'm cheap and I just wanted the leak stopped. After looking at the other lines, they insisted that the rest of the fuel lines be replaced or they wouldn't 'do it. I can respect that. Quote; $120. Total cost $250. Not a bad deal considering my car was pouring gasoline when I drove it in, and I was basically driving a bomb. Dave was nice, straightforward and professional. It's easy not to trust mechanics, but I would trust Dave and Baron's. The weird; they charge me for "shop towels" and "lubricants". Not much, just a couple bucks but why? Not complaining, just unusual is all. My car- 1989 BMW 325i convertible. 180k+ miles. Oh, and the receptionist is nice. Offered me a soda, coffee, there's WiFi and a few local places for lunch if you need to wait. Overall good experience and would recommend. read more

This is the ONLY place to go to repair your car. I have been dealing with David and the people at Baron's for over 25 years with my various cars and there is NO place else I would trust. I actually bought another BMW because I trust them that much and it is so hard to find a mechanic you can trust. They drive you back to forth where you have to go to make the experience even better. David is always going in 100 directions,however, you are always #1 in his book and he cares very much for his customers, each and every one of them. One must remember that happy customers seldom write reviews. My wife and I have been taking our cars to Baron's for 10 years; 430 CLK Mercedes, M Roadster, Smart Car, and an X5. There is no question that Baron's is cheaper than a dealer. Neither is there a question that Baron's "suggestively upsells" less than a dealer. Take a car to any BMW or Mercedes dealer and they will try to sell you new brakes even if they were replaced 10k miles ago. A cars demeanor is the made up of its engineering along with how it's driven and maintained. The majority of the sustained damage is due to how a car is engineered and driven. Not the mechanic. It isn't fun to have car trouble, but as long as you keep driving it will continue. read more

5 stars isn't enough! I recently visited this auto shop for an oil service, and I was blown away by the exceptional service. The team was lightning-fast, and the price was incredibly competitive. What truly impressed me, though, was the owner's attention to detail. They thoroughly checked my vehicle, explained everything, and didn't hit me with any surprise charges. Given that I own a Mercedes, I was particularly impressed that they used the correct type of oil recommended by Mercedes-Benz. CONSUMER BEWARE!!! It is impossible to get an accurate evaluation of any business using YELP. After we were approached to advertise with Yelp and declined, the ratio of good to bad reviews has never been true on the front page. Baron's has remarkably more 5 star reviews than 1 star, yet every negative review but one is on the first page. In order to view the 35 or so excellent reviews, one must scroll down the page to the filtered section. Why are these reviews filtered? Yelp claims that it is to "showcase the most helpful reviews" and that they "use filtering software to determine which reviews should be filtered" Draw your own conclusions. read more

I have received professional and ethical service from a BMW shop up in the San Francisco Bay Area and wanted more of the same down here in San Diego. I got an excellent referral from them to a fellow named David Baron. He was able to efficiently and "ethically" service my BMW . Being a woman, ethics is crucial for me in my choice of someone working on my car. David and his staff were able to clearly communicate to me what the issues were with my car, the cost of the repairs in advance (not to exceed) and diligently tend to the urgent problems. Patricia Patti is obviously an idiot with an axe to grind! David Barons has been servicing my '85 380SL for several years now. He is far superior to SD Mercedes in both quality and value. SD MB quoted me over $2000 to fix a warm-start control. David did it for just over $200!! He is a personable, honest, caring individual... as is the rest of his staff. Baron's Foreign Car Service was suggested to me when I needed some work done on my MINI Cooper. They were friendly, honest and their prices were half that of the dealer for the same work. While I was there I witnessed them telling another customer that they could do about $2300 worth of work on their car but that only about $200 was really needed and that work didn't need to be done for a little while. I had an extraordinary experience with Baron's that I wanted to share. Two days before Thanksgiving I came down to visit my son and found some evidence of oil leaks under my car. I called Baron's late in the afternoon of my arrival. They made an appointment for the next morning. This could have been a very expensive repair but when they looked at the car, they told me that there was nothing wrong and there would be no charge. This is extraordinary customer service. The staff is super friendly and definitely knows what they're doing -- they don't beat around the bush or try to upsell unnecessary stuff. These guys went above and beyond the call of duty. I took my Mercedes-Benz in for a basic B service and they not only serviced the car, but they washed it, cleaned the windows inside and out, and replaced a couple break lights free of charge. They were also $150 cheaper than the dealership and most other service shops I got quotes from. They also gave me ride home and offered to pick me up when the car was done. I moved out here about 4 years ago and found Barons from searching for a mechanic for European cars. I can't recommend them enough! they always take good care of me and I trust them which can be the hardest part of finding a good shop. Even when I stick around to wait for a. oil change, George always makes sure that I am comfortable and helps set up a little work desk for me.
