I have been a chronic pain patient for over 20 years. Dr. Barnett kept insisting she would not write for medication for me even though that was not the reason for my appointment and I never asked her to do so. To be clear: I was there for surgery options and had no interest or need for further medication. A few weeks later (after a CT scan), her office called my house and told me I had to come in immediately for an emergency appointment. She would not tell me what the emergency was and called several of my family members and a friend of the family I had listed as an emergency contact without my consent, scaring the heck out of all of us.
Concerned that I had a brain tumor, we all went to the appointment where it turned out there was no emergency. In fact, she just wasted all of our time in order to shame me for being on pain medication. So, my father (a surgeon himself) had to reschedule his patients and surgeries that day. My mom (a nurse) had to change shifts with another nurse. Everyone put their lives on hold because she said it was "life threatening" to delay.
At the end of the appointment, I asked her, "So, you scared the heck out of me and my family for no reason and do not even have a solution for the problem you perceive that I have"? She answered, "If you were my daughter... if you were my sister... if you were my wife or the woman I was taking care of... etc." The problem was, she did not really look at the decades of medical files or treat me as a person with my own, unique set of health problems.
Basically, she had tried to bring together an intervention (which she is neither qualified to do nor was it her business to do so) without knowing the facts of my medical history or talking to me about what she perceived to be a problem I had. She also failed to include my family, who have lived through this with me, in her process. I know what she was attempting to do, but it had nothing to do with why I had made an appointment to see her in the first place. I was there to discuss surgical options for a brain condition and her thrusting her assumptions onto me and my family without asking if we had tried everything else before considering surgery, which we had, was incredibly unprofessional and contrived.
Also, she kept putting down Christianity. read more
