This is such a fun and modern B&N! It was easy to spend 2 hours here - starting with great service in the cafe and learning their baked goods are from a local bakery (not to typical Starbucks foods - WAY better). The store is laid out in a really cool way, staff were friendly and helpful. We already plan on coming back for dates and shopping trips!

Opening day 8/26/26

I was highly anticipating this B&N to open and managed to stop by after work on their grand opening Wednesday August 26, 2026. On their website, it is said "The new Barnes & Noble spans more than 27,000 square feet on the upper floor of South Coast Plaza Mall, bringing bookselling back to a space that was once a Borders Bookstore. The new store will have the extensive presentation of books expected of so large a store, as well as exclusive gifts, a large selection of curated toys and games, vinyl, newsstand and much more. The store offers a Barnes & Noble Café featuring an outdoor patio with stunning views. The new Costa Mesa, CA Barnes & Noble is located at 3333 Bear Street, Suite 340, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, in the former Sports Chalet space." I came specifically curious to see how big this new location is since their old location at Metro Pointe was two levels. This new location is beautiful. The register is very open and huge, makes it feel like an Apple Store service center. Though the guy who helped me at checked out when I was there (late afternoon) seemed already checked out himself! Didn't even ask if I wanted a bag, or offered any of the Grand Opening day perks.. though I understand he probably beat by that time but still... Regardless, I can't really tell if this new location is actually bigger than the former one. But, the numbers don't lie and this flagship location supposed to be bigger than the former and offers a lot more. It's very modern and the cafe is in the corner with full floor to ceiling glass wall so it's very bright! I love their stationery and art sections though I feel like they didn't have as much selections of notebooks like the one in Vegas. Overall, it seems like they utilized every square footage of the space and mindfully put things and places in locations that's to me were very interesting. I also like how they have a lot of Japanese stationary and gifts such as Studio Ghibli items.. the kids section though I did not enter fully to check out but it did seem smaller and more crowded than the old location. Overall, it's a B&N and if you love books you will love any B&N! This didn't have the wonderful paper smell aroma like other B&N locations, (the Irvine Spectrum one you can smell the wonderful books and new pages aromas just walking right outside the store), however, it gives very popular and fun library vibes. There are calendars stands everywhere so it's like a treasure hunt to go to every section to see what kind of calendars they have there. Highly recs guys and girls!!

“I miss Borders with a passion, which used to be South Coast Plaza (and also the Block of Orange which has also just opened a new Barnes and Noble), so I welcome Barnes and Noble to South Coast.”

Out of the 2 locations I've been to, this has a better parking lot as well. Since the store is a lot bigger, that means a lot more selection of figures, books, manga, videos and more. In general, I do enjoy this store as it has great value. I found quite a few things that were quite cheaper here than if you go to a large retail store. If you have anything that you may want to get rid of (but works very well or in good shape) you can see if they're willing to it and give you an estimate. The staff are helpful to help you (the best of their ability) to find what you are looking for or need.

Lots of books, old school games, dvds, action figures or collectibles, videos and more. You could spend a lot of time in here if you are only perusing. Everything was tidy and well-organized. I think some of the of books were out of place from topics but for the most part, it was kept clean. Lot of the products and books were in pretty good condition. Some products were a little pricey for secondhand use..but nonetheless pretty cool spot. Service was alright--didn't really talk to the staff all that much and they seemed pretty busy organizing the books and shelving. The cashier that helped me didn't really give me any vibe other than he was just there to do his job which isn't a bad thing but I've definitely experienced more hospitable customer service at other book stores.

A friend of mine suggested this shop to help with manifesting a bit more wealth in 2024 and I ended up with a new perspective on life and a sense of peace within the first 5 minutes. If you're looking for incense, candles, statuettes, readings, cards, beads, etc., in an open, friendly, peaceful environment, Visions and Dreams is the place for you. A quick chat with Terese (or is it Therese?) helped me feel the calmest I'd felt in months. She quickly put me at ease and answered all my questions, and suggested a lovely candle that would not only help with abundance but also joy. While mine was a bit on the pricier side ($32), she has candles in all shapes, sizes, colors, and intentions. The candle I chose was perfect for my needs, so I had no issues purchasing it. I even grabbed one for my friend! Enter this shop with questions and leave with a sense of security.

If you're social, chat with the guys upfront. They love books, too. But if you're not social, that's fine. Hide in your favorite section. They have a good amount of poetry, which is right next to a section labeled "memory," which is how you know they do poetry right. Books aren't overpriced. I usually leave under twenty bucks with a fair amount of new reading. Here's the thing: I keep going back. You know it's good when you keep going back.

I had checked the website and it appears that they had it. I approached the counter and spoke to a gentleman (about 5'6 or 5'"7. Super friendly man, he retrieved the book, charged me and I was on my way. Everything was excellent. Second experience was yesterday. I perused the aisles and grabbed 4 used books. I approached the counter to pay. A tall man sitting on the register is on his phone at full blast. I'm literally aside from him. I'm standing where him and another employee were helping another customer before. I'm thinking he hasn't seen me. But I'm the only one there. I still give him the benefit of the doubt. So I clear my throat and I mention "ok I'm ready". He finally acknowledges me and says "the come to the register" and he grabs my books and starts charging. He seemed upset and im not sure why. I walk around to the other side. I'm not sure if he was annoyed that I wasn't standing on the right side. Who knows. But all I know is that he saw me and he wasn't friendly. Two different transactions, two different experiences. I guess you'll get different treatment depending on who's helping you out.
