OMGosh!! Knowing what this place is known for and the intense training they give each young actors, makes this place a 6 Star Barn! Loved the pizza before the Show! We were there on the 7th of July and the Barn was packed. Everyone around us were excited and loud in laughter! Loved it. The BAR SHOW was the icing on the cake of a delightful evening! Wonderful professional theatre that presents musicals and plays throughout the summer and early autumn. Most seasons include a wide range of classic musicals, e.g., Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, modern musicals, e.g., Escape to Margaritaville, Rock of Ages along with comedies like Clue, The Play that Goes Wrong with an occasional drama in the mix. Each year, the highly talented veterans are joined by several apprentices, who add new voices and choreographic skills. After the main stage show, they also do a very fun cabaret style show in the rehearsal shed bar, which serves pizza and light snacks along with beverages. Always a very enjoyable time! read more

Saw 9 to 5 with and outstanding casts. The barn theater is filled with history and the cushions make sitting comfy. So much energy and enthusiasm throughout the place . The shed is my favorite part; it was entertaining and paced out wonderfully. The mosquitoes in the restroom should pay admission!!! Enjoyed snacks and drinks with great service from the cast company. What a unique experience and a MUST if you're in western Michigan! I've watched shows on Broadway, at the Pantages in Los Angeles and I honestly think that the artists & performers here are just as talented! Sure, it's not a huge stage production but the folks who run it here are so creative with the space, budget they have. Really, really impressed. Everyone told me that the after-show Rehearsal Shed was a must & they were right. Make sure you book online in advance! Also, it's a $20 minimum, so make sure you order a few things (they serve Plainwell ice cream!) The Shed format is in 3 "acts" with the same artists/performers running point on the bar, serving people, etc. I don't know how they do it - I'd be exhausted! The Barn Theatre is a wonderful place to take in a top rated show. There's not a bad seat in the house...er Barn! The production of Disaster was excellent! A spoof on the disaster themed movies of the seventies featuring great disco and Motown music of the era. Had a fun time playing name that tune with my wife and then waiting to see how the lyrics fit into the show! Tons of laughs! The list of show for the 2019 season is impressive. Sweeney Todd, Steel Magnolias, Big, & Mama Mia to name a few. Will definitely be back! read more

This place is a hidden jewel. Why do I say that . . . you ask, I did not know it existed. Until a Yelpers event there the 21st of this month. I love the Theatre, my fist experience with a play was being taken to the Watervliet high school production, of Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration Oklahoma!, by my dad who taught there. Being a geeky teen I was not sure who I like more Jed the antagonist, or Cury the lovable male protagonist. More to the point 'the play is the thing', Hairspray is a joy to watch the actors do a great job. I found myself quickly, being pulled into the story of the plus sized heroine and her comic adventures. The moral of the story was not lost among many funny high-jinks. The only distraction was the occasional microphone issue. I cannot wait to take my wife to another production. read more

We have driven past this area for the past few years but never really knew what it was. We were excited when we won the Yelp contest for we will rock you. This would be our chance to discover something new in town. The area is well kept and it's so green. The rehearsal shed was also a great place to chill before the show starts. I was kinda skeptical that the barn theatre would be hot inside but it was cool. So glad that the weather was less humid and hot on Saturday. The performance was spectacular. My husband was so excited since it was his first time to go to a theatre show. He is thrilled to be back for the rent show. As a passionate theatre goer and participant, it's a pleasure (but also a challenge) to review theatres. There are a million facets to consider, or I could just simply focus on the experience as a whole. I'll try to be fair here and try to give a "general" review, rather than a theatre-junkie review. But no promises. The Barn Theatre is incredibly unique, and this is why you should go. It's an experience quite unlike any other theatre that I've been to. Therefore, I can't encourage you enough to go at least once. That being said, like most theatres, it's not perfect and you should also be aware of its (few) shortcomings. Here's the positive: The "experience" includes more than just a show. By arriving early, you can relax at the onsite bar, which serves craft cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. And if that weren't enough you are actually served by the actors and crew of the show! I don't know how many places in the world offer you the chance to chat with the actors before, and after the show (and even during intermission, apparently). The show that we saw was "Hairspray." Somehow, after about twenty years of participating in theatre, I'd still never seen that show. It was fun all around. It's a decent show and really allowed a few star actors, dancers, and singers to shine. That being said, the theatre itself (the actual venue of the show) was perhaps one of the low points of the experience. True to its name, the Barn Theatre is indeed in a barn. And that may not actually be a good thing. While it's unique, the elongated barn features some seats which feel exceptionally far from the stage. The sound quality was similarly lacking at points. While these two aspects only detracted from the show in a few specific instances, it was enough to pull me out of "the experience" more than once. Theatres are tricky, and this one displayed some of its faults. That being said, the cast did a wonderful job of projecting out, "acting big," and filling the space. It was still a pleasure to watch and had many laugh-out-loud moments, and a few exceptionally moving scenes. Like I said before, this is a theatre worth experiencing at least once. They take care of you well. It may not be the most impressive venue, but it will be one that sticks with you. read more

Awesome venue. This rustic, historic site has rolling green fields of grass (doubles as the parking lot!), a lounge/bar/ice cream shack, a few other buildings, and the main attraction: a giant old barn theater. My party of four drove a few hours to get to the theater to see Avenue Q. It was a hot day and an equally hot drive with no a/c, and by the time we got there we were ready to relax and laugh. We were all excited and kind of in awe of this giant barn when we arrived. Parking guys flagged us into our spot on the grass out front and we approached the barn to pick up our tix. There was a line to get in, but luckily, the barn was air conditioned and it felt nice and cool in there. Seating was a bit tight, but that's to be expected for an old theater. The performance was great. Quality performers, sound, lighting, etc. Restrooms are located outside the building and they have both rustic (outhouses - not sure if they're functional or just a joke) and those for 'city folk' (indoor plumbing). Very cool place. I'd definitely return for a show during their summer-only running time. read more

This little gem is amazing! I never thought Evil Dead would be a musical, nor did i think i would ever get to see it live, but now i have! Tickets were reasonable, seats were old school theatre seats, great views from every one. the acoustics were surprisingly awesome in such an old and interesting space. i would def come back here for another viewing of anything anytime! Suggestion: if you are planning on the bar after the show on site, book ahead! they fill up FAST! The line after the show was very LONG and we couldnt get a reservation before hand. Also, the bathrooms are limited so go when you can. read more

The Barn Theatre is great entertainment in a very unique setting - literally an old barn! Going here is a great way to support equity actors, many of whom are just getting their start, and it's something that I think most folks would enjoy - esp. if visiting the area and looking for something uniquely West Michigan. Make sure you get tickets midway to the front or closer, though, as the sound system isn't the best for those sitting in the back. read more

This place is such a treasure, both for patrons and for the summer stockers who get the opportunity to earn their equity stripes sharing the stage with some big names (like Guiding Light alum Robert Newman, who himself earned his equity card at the Barn and is once again guest starring this season in shows including "Hunchback of Notre Dame," which opened last night and runs through June 25 and "Lion in Winter," in which he'll co-star with fellow Barn bigwig Kim Zimmer July 25 - Aug. 6). It never ceases to amaze me the paces the apprentices get put through here. When you pull into the grass parking lot, they're the ones who guide your cars into the correct spot, they pour drinks and serve snacks in the bar area before and after the show, perform in the plays and musicals, and then they zip over to the bar area afterward to entertain guests with a three-set bar show full of entertaining choreography, great lighting, costume changes and more. The amount of rehearsal that must go in to pulling off the main stage and bar stage performances must be exhausting, too. They always knock it out of the park. I can't recall being more excited for a Barn season ... the 2017 lineup is almost exclusively shows that are new to the Barn (plus a repeat staging of one of my favorite musicals, "Rent," which was composed by Barn alum Jonathan Larson.) Should be an exciting year. read more

As a resident of Augusta where the Barn Theatre is located, I have visited the Theatre many times. I have never been disappointed with the shows or the after show entertainment at the rehearsal shed. Having never gone to a broadway play it's hard for me to compare but I believe that the Barm theatre to be right up there with the best. read more

I can't say enough great things about the Barn Theatre! Simply fabulous. I look forward to it every summer when we come to the lake. They do such a tremendous job. Kudos to the Ragotzys. They've kept the family tradition alive for 70 seasons. Besides entertaining the public, they have offered opportunities to young actors, giving them a chance to learn and perform. This summer, two of the shows were particularly noteworthy, partly or mostly because they were so different from each other. Jesus Christ Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show. Amazingly, the same actor (Jay Poff) had the leading role in both. All I can say is: What range, what a voice, what acting!!!! Phenomenal!!! How these young superstars are not on Broadway, I don't know. Definitely worth the price of a ticket and more. An experience you won't soon forget. read more

I've been seeing shows at the Barn Theatre since I was a little kid. This place is like a thoroughly treasured walk back in time every time I visit.I have wonderful memories of coming here with my grandparents, who bought season tickets every Summer.The shows are always wonderful, the actors and actresses are insanely talented. We saw One of my all-time favorite shows,the Rocky Horror Show. We all had a great time. My husband and I went to The Rehearsal Shed afterwards for the post show and a few drinks. I'm thankful to have this little theater close to home! What a unique summer spot and they put on big name shows at a great price for musical theater! I love that I can come here and see a show for a decent price vs. paying double or triple for the same show in a big city (I'm even referring to Detroit or Grand Rapids), therefore giving me the chance to see a show that I might not otherwise see. And the talent here is great! I have seen 5 shows here over the last few years, including 2 shows this year. It's fun to see that the performers are also working the ticket booths and serving your drinks at the adjacent bar. I just had my first experience at the rehearsal shed, which was a nice added bonus to see a fun encore performance. Legroom in the seats is pretty tight. Theater is air conditioned. I'm probably about to jinx myself, but thankfully I've never been here when it's raining. The parking lot is a grass lawn, and there is not really a lobby in this theater, so people usually step outside for fresh air during intermission, and you have to walk outside to visit the restrooms or snack bar. Looking forward to coming back to this theater soon! read more
