Saturday morning, pretty busy. Not a lot of seating. Drinks to table: 3 minutes. Order placed and time of food to table: 8 minutes. RAPID fast. I had a three meat skillet with over medium eggs, and sourdough toasted bread. MUST get the sourdough eggs were perfect, lots of sausage, meat, and potato. Excellent value for 11$ Wife had the two egg, bacon, potato and toast (sourdough). Excellent value for 7$. Lowest price we've seen for a breakfast that "filled her up" this morning. I don't know what happened because I've got liver and onions there many many times, but this time the liver was so tough. I had trouble cutting it with my knife. Very very tough must've been overcooked or they forgot to put it in milk the night before they soak it. Everything else was very good potatoes coleslaw bacon onions were great but the liver was bad news tough. I didn't say anything, but I'm wondering if there's a new cook there? Barley's is known for its rather ticky tack charges in the first place such as $.25 for onions in potatoes... But this has goes too far. Since eggs are $.50 each in the first place at six dollars a dozen that means that Barley's is shifting 100% of the cost of the egg component to the customer and pocketing extra profit. Folks, that's called price gouging; what a crappy way to treat your customers. read more

I stopped here for lunch on a Wednesday and there were a lot of people there. My server came right over and gave me a menu and took my drink order. When she came back with my drink she took my order. I ordered a French Dip with cream of mushroom soup. After a short wait, she came back with the sandwich and soup together. I would rather eat my soup first and then serve my dinner. Not a big deal, just my preference. The soup was really good, definitely tasted homemade. My sandwich was good, but there was not a lot of meat. It tasted good, just wished there was more. Stopped by for breakfast last week and I was pleasantly surprised! It's a nice diner with a laid back country feel. Service was top notch. Ordered a Veggie omelet with a side of sausage and hash browns. Food was hot and tasty, the only reason I gave 4 stars on food was I wanted more "good" veggies but got a lot of onions, which I love but too many. Best early morning diner around. As a lone traveler, I was greeted as a friend, treated as a guest, and the food was top notch. Eggs are generally eggs, but these were cooked to perfection and had Golden yolks, not the normal pale yellow. When we entered we were not greeted or anything so after waiting a couple minutes we just tried to find a semi-clean booth. Settling in we had to wait a bit before the waitress brought over the menu to us. I ordered the half sandwich and soup option for my lunch. The BLT and Chili is what I ordered. The Chili came first and was pretty much spaghetti. It had 1 large chunk of hamburger and was very sweet with tomato flavor. Little to no heat in the chili. The BLT came and was served with standard Lay's potato chips. The bacon was good but the rest of the sandwich was just okay. Normal burnt thin white bread with too much mayo. Prices are affordable and the food is always fantastic. I go there so frequently that most of the waitstaff actually knows me by name. This has always been a go to place for me. Whether you are nursing a hangover or just not wanting to cook you will find many things to suit your fancy. Breakfasts are large, filling and delicious. Eggs Benedict is ALWAYS good. I would recommend if you are getting a traditional breakfast go for a side of ham. They serve ham steaks which have never disappointed. The restaurant is equipped with a bar, cocktails are an optional accompaniment. For the strong willed there is liver and onions on the menu! Wow! Stopped in this morning for a quick breakfast before getting on a bus to go to a conference down in Milwaukee. Sat down at 5:15, not knowing how long it would take to make our food that early in the AM. Was pleasantly surprised that we got our food VERY quickly, a whole pot of coffee (necessary!!! ) and great service. We went here around 10:30 am and sat in a booth. I ordered an omelette and P ordered French toast. The food was not great but not bad. I had to add salt to get a bit of flavor. The reason for the 2 stars and not the 3 stars is that I watched a waitress clear a table where approximately 12 people had been sitting and she picked up the water pitcher which was about 1/4 full of water and dumped it back into the water pitcher that was on the service table from where all the waitresses use to fill water glasses for new patrons. This diner has been around as long as I can remember. I went here in high school the mornings after dances and I think that's probably the last time I was there. It's a typical diner and has the usual suspects on the menu-egg platters, steak and eggs, waffles, pancakes, burgers, etc. It was crazy busy when we went there (duh Sunday morning) so the service was lacking a bit. We were sat at the counter and I think had we been sat at a table the service would've been an bit more attentive. That being said, our food was delicious. I got the waffles with whipped cream and hash browns. I was happy to see they offer sides sauces for an additional charge to go with the hash browns. Try a side of hollandaise- so good. I had the fajita melt and it was stuffed with tender steak and peppers and onions. Delicious. The beans were a little stiff but tasted good as did the rice. I would love to support a local restaurant but I have a problem supporting any business that employees less than honest associates. Long story short, we stopped in for a meal, we had a few kids in tow and things were a bit hectic, we ended up leaving our portable DVD player behind, when we realized it the next day we called the restaurant to see if they found it at the table... surprise they did not. That's seems odd since when we left the restaurant, it was closing and our group was the last one in the restaurant the night before. My wife and I have made several phone calls and stopped in a few times since to check, and there is never a manger on duty and the kids working don't care. Disappointing that a restaurant would employ someone(s) that would take a kids DVD player. Yes, we left it behind, our fault, but I would have thought someone would have been honest. Will gladly drive past this place in favor of other restaurants. To be frank, I have been here a few times and this situation aside, the food is mediocre, ( I see people talk about how good the burgers are... it's just frozen patty cooked in a flat top- think high school), the atmosphere is a bit rough- dingy country diner that is no different than any other dingy diner you find across the country. Deerfield Diner waitstaff seem to be very resentful of large groups of people. If there is no large table available they don't care. They have other customers to wait on and don't want to be bothered. They are not very subtle in letting you know that either. read more

I go to Barley's often, and will give you the real truth here - it can be hit or miss, but mostly hit. The good is that, for the most part, the wait staff is efficient and pleasant. Yes, there are times when I wonder what happened, but they know what they're doing. The food is diner food, not 3 or four star dining, so set your expectations or go elsewhere. It's very good. The breakfasts, the Barley Burger, the Hot Roast Beef are great. The soups look good. I'm told Chicken and Dumpling is great, as is the Vegetable Beef. Pies homemade and excellent. Now, the bad - it's a local place, so you may not be greeted at the door. Customers generally wander in and seat themselves, but they do take names when full. Sometimes, I've had cold food, however, the staff is excellent about taking it back and making it right. So there you have it, a usually very busy diner with good menu staples, not fancy, not always consistent, but a place I'll keep going back to often. read more

My dad rushed me into the bathroom and washed my mouth so I wouldn't get sick. It was the worst experience of my entire life. I never went there ever again.
