However, I didn't realize how malleable it could get until after I began wearing it. I was so set on choosing platinum because I figured it would be the easiest and most low maintenance material. The band kept losing its shape any time I wore it. It began driving me insane because I needed to come in and get it fixed almost every 4-8 months (depending on how frequently I was wearing it). After dropping my simple gold wedding band off with the promise of a 1 hr turnaround at $125 to have it sized down (he tried to charge $150), I came back 90 minutes later and the ring had clearly not been touched yet. I shared that I'd spent the last 90 minutes researching online and at other shops in the jewelry market and had learned that this service should cost no more than $50. Some places charge as low as $20. I asked Sam politely what the reason was for the steep price difference. He talked about how much time and care went into sizing the ring, and how he used only the best materials so that the cut would be completely invisible. To demonstrate, he began showing me the process, which reinforced my suspicion that when I walked back into the store, he had not yet begun work on my ring. 10 minutes later Sam was done - the work was good, but the seam was indeed visible. After a conversation the price came down to $100. I'm happy, the work is no better or worse than any I have had done before. But be warned that he clearly upcharges for his charm (he's very sweet and complimentary) and generosity (he did a sonic clean on my engagement ring for free). If you want a deal this is not the place. But it's fine otherwise! Not gonna get scalped but not the most price sensitive option if you're in the jewelry district.
