Really great experience. Received a text message with codes for the front door, room door, and…read moreparking information. Didn't have to see a person at all, which is great for someone like me lol Others may not appreciate the impersonal nature of the transaction as much as I did. Room was large, bed was huge and comfortable, linens smelled fresh. Furnishings were suitable for the theme of the Inn. Breakfast was adequate- yogurt, fruit, some packaged muffins, mini bagels, juice and coffee. Perfectly fine. You should be made aware when you book, but there's no elevator so you're carrying your bags up those steps (see my pics). We were here at the end of September during some sort of freak heat wave and the poor little window AC was doing its best to keep up. I was comfortable; my husband was hot. I just appreciated they had AC at all. It's just a very large room with high ceilings to try to cool with a small unit.

So far, so good! I just checked in and will update as the day goes on…read more Very clean - smells great, even with huge amount of antiques. Very sweet check-in with Sue. Quiet little street (I'm a city girl) - can see Mine from window looking out front of 2nd story. If you are from the country, you will think it is a highway out front. I lived by the freeway in MN so this is quiet to me. Room has everything a girl needs, except food - and that is walking distance. On second look, there is coffee and water in the lobby. You can probably find a muffin or tangerine in the fridge if you want a little snack. Cute little park area (very small, think tiny mountain town) across the street to walk dogs. Flowers are gorgeous. More later...

The best find of the trip, the Ponderosa Motor Lodge is off the beaten path. Just up the road from…read morethe casino soaked town of Deadwood, this place has more charm and class than anything we found over there. A (I am assuming) family run establishment perched atop a hill, this place consists on a few cabins with one or two motel rooms in each. It's filled to the brim with kitsch and the family that runs it is sweet as pie (Grandma even stayed up late so we could check in at 11:15pm! I LOVE HER!). We went in the off season and called 3pm the day off to get a room and had our pick of the litter, they did say it fills up quick in the summer. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean and you couldn't beat the price (I think it was $50). Everytime I am in South Dakota I am going to go out of my way to stay here. me: "where would you recommend we go for breakfast?" lady at desk: "well, i just wish the burger king hadn't closed..." I LOVE THIS PLACE!

ZERO STARS I booked a room from out of state by calling the…read morelocal number (I had already looked at the property on two booking sites.) It sent me to another booking company and I reserved a room on Jan. 15th. We arrived early and called to get an early check in. There was NO FRONT DESK to check in. There were NO PEOPLE on the property. We waited till check in time. We waited another half hour (in a blizzard) in the parking lot. NO ONE EVER SHOWED UP. THE PROPERTY WAS APPARENTLY CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. Now they refuse to refund my money. They are still booking rooms and cabins on at least 3 booking sites. Beware! This place will scam you.

This is a great spot for a family vacation…read more We stayed in the Pioneer cabin, which was comfortable for our family of four. Some of the cabins are new and some are modernized older buildings. We loved the rustic interior of our cabin and, being used to camping, appreciated the basic kitchen and bathroom with shower. Wickiup Village is a short distance from a lot of great South Dakota attractions: Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse memorial, the Needles Highway, and the towns of Deadwood and Lead. You can even get to Wall Drug and Badlands National Park within two hours. There is a store and restaurant within easy walking distance, which came in handy. The staff was great and went out of their way to make sure everything was going well. This might not be the place for you if you're used to five-star hotels, but if you want to stay in a place with charm and unique character, don't pass up Wickiup Village.
