Overall, I like the paint job Barbour did of the interior of my home. The price was unbeatable and they were very accommodating of our schedule; we were home for one week of the job, and away for the second as the ceilings had to be scraped. The colors are fresh and I love how they patched cracks and caulked things in. I give them 3 stars for a few reasons. The first being the mess. Our house was EXTREMELY dusty with gypsum when we arrived home at the end of the project, even in the insides of closets that hadn't even been painted. It took us days to wash and wipe everything down, and we were sneezing and itching the whole time and had to wear masks. I was told that everything would be cleaned with Simple Green, so it was very disconcerting that it clearly wasn't. Even now, weeks later, you can bump a baseboard and white dust will fall off/out. We have green overspray on our light colored stamped concrete walkway and the exterior siding of the house around it, texture on the tops of ceiling fans and light switches, and paint drips on our interior wooden floors, which had been covered. It seems like while we were home they were very meticulous, but while we were gone they felt free to be sloppy and disregard our property and belongings. Second, they removed a ceiling fan at my request, which I appreciated, but we came home to it broken, with paint all over it, and found it sitting in the pouring rain on the porch. Needless to say, we had to purchase a new ceiling fan and are very bummed that the old one is no longer usable. Third, I was not pleased that my request for a change order was ignored. The estimator, Rodger, was great. Friendly, accommodating and promised me the world. Once I signed the contract, though, I never heard from him again. I had sent him a change order in writing two days after I signed and never heard back. I figured he maybe would tell the crew what I wanted. I felt like I had to hound the project manager about things that weren't done "correctly" because nobody ever acknowledged the change order. I even told him what I wanted more than once, and offered to pay extra to ensure they got done. But in the end I just gave up on getting everything I wanted. read more

I'm skeptical when a business gushes over their desire to provide quality customer satisfaction. All too often you find that this is not backed up by actions that prove that. Barbour Painting is a rare exception and a business that puts its money where its "mouth" is. They did not accept a single cent from me until the job was done and I was happy. Absolutely incredible. Their quote for painting the outside of our home included a designer who came out to our house and helped us choose colors. It included a week's worth of preparation, probably the most important part of a paint job. We spent a little more to upgrade the paint (the additional fee was no more than the cost of the new paint). We needed some repair work done on some window frames and stucco and they were able to handle all that without having to bring in additional contractors. They offered to handle every request I had and did them with extreme skill. They took care to do things I hadn't expected. For instance, they used two colors to match our downspouts to the surrounding trim (see photo). This was a pleasant surprise and proof that the painters cared about their craft. Emerson and Martin handled all the work at our house and were terrific. They cleaned up every day and were very attentive to our needs. We initially were looking for someone to help with our chipped and rotting eaves and trim. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Barbour because the other companies would only pressure wash before painting. We wanted to prevent damage to the roof, especially with the heavy rain and extreme heat we've experienced the last few years which really did a number on the wood. Then we decided to do a face lift and replace the salmon pink stucco with something a little more subdued. From Rodger's initial estimate to the final product, we were very impressed with the level of professionalism, attention to detail, and quality of work everyone on their team provided. Chris made some great design suggestions and checked in frequently to make sure we were happy with the work. Alonzo also regularly checked in to make sure everything was going well. We are happy we went with a higher bid because the work speaks for itself. The warranty is twice as long as the other companies we got estimates from and we feel relieved knowing the roof will be protected. Five stars are not enough. Barbour Painting is absolutely top notch. We recently hired them to paint the exterior of our house, and it was an excellent experience from beginning to end--and the house looks beautiful. To mention a few notable aspects: --The initial consultation with Rodger started things off on a very positive note as he spent plenty of time thoroughly looking over the house and going over details of the process with us. Then, following up, the written quote, which came within a day or so, was also extremely thorough and detailed. --Scheduling through the office was quick and easy, and we were able to get on their calendar fairly soon. (I don't know if this is always the case though--we might have gotten lucky, because I would expect an outfit this good is often booked out a ways.) Also, at this time, Aaron came out to discuss color selection, and he clearly understands color theory as applied to houses. Furthermore, rather than simply having us select from paper samples (not reliable in my previous house painting experience), he arranged to have demos of the various colors we'd discussed painted directly onto the house so we could get a much better idea before making a choice. --Once the job was underway, it couldn't have gone more smoothly. Chris, the project manager, was out at the house each day to check on things, and was otherwise always available via phone or text to answer any questions. And, of course most important, a huge shout out to the crew who did the actual painting--Eri and Benjamin. They were thorough and careful every step of the way, and a joy to have around. Plus, they were always thoughtful in neatly storing ladders and other equipment in one area of our yard before leaving at the end of the day; and also demonstrative of their courtesy, there was never anything left around that should be disposed of like soda cans, etc. (which has not always been the case with other workers that have come to our house for other jobs!). Without exception, everyone involved was prompt, professional, honest, knowledgeable--and very friendly. Barbour Painting clearly takes pride in their work, and the results show it. And as far as cost, very fair, plus a five-year warranty. Also, I should note that they are so committed to customer satisfaction that they do not ask for a penny until the work is completed and the customer is happy. My Oakland house exterior was last painted in the 90s and it showed, peeling paint and shabby after 35 years. I had three or four quotes and Barbour was by far the best. Rodger Barbour came out and took me through the steps to paint the house, explaining everything on the way. He also explained it is a family business, which I appreciate. I contracted with Barbour to paint the house and in just over a week after starting the house had been pressure washed, prepped, windows covered, bare spots primed, the stucco repaired, and the whole house carefully painted. From my first meeting with Aaron Barbour to talk about the scope of project to Manuel coming every morning at 6:30am to be able to start working at 7am on the dot to Chris listening to me and making sure I was completely happy with the final job, I was treated like a VIP client and our house looks beautiful because of it. My wife and I are in awe of how much GOOD our house looks now. Our project was a difficult one. Our 1940s house had gone through different remodels and one previous owner decided to cover up the original lap siding with cedar shingles. Our two story home on a cliff side was meticulously de-shingled by Manuel aka Chiki. Every nail hole was patched and sanded. Every board that needed to be replaced was matched. Manuel was our professional carpenter and painter who started every morning punctual, worked throughout the heat and would be meticulous with cleanup before he checked out at 3pm. He went above and beyond and I can't express how much I appreciate him being part of this Barbour team. Chris was my point person and was the one who got the 10 samples of paint to make sure I picked the right color. Chris ran around town looking for the closest match to our old siding.
