The Modern Canine - Poodle Groomer

Here's a short blurb that pretty much recaps my entire review for those who don't want to read the…read morewhole thing: "That's why I still recommend The Modern Canine for the store itself and will continue to support it by buying toys and treats, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE. Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa." I hesitate writing this review because the owners, Monica and Arjun, are EXTREMELY nice and run a well kept and absolutely adorable shop filled with amazing treats, toys, and food options/toppers for dogs. The Modern Canine is conveniently located in a strip mall on 206 with plenty of parking, and they give free puppacinos to dogs who visit. Unfortunately, my review is as low as it is because I had a TERRIBLE experience with their groomer Lisa. Despite the multiple recommendations I received in a local neighborhood Facebook page for a reputable groomer, Lisa did the worst grooming job I've ever seen (I had a cockapoo for 16 years prior to the puppy I have now). Worst of all, I trusted this groomer enough to do my dog's haircut 2 weeks before our wedding. I paid $80 for a full body haircut, bath, brush/blowout, ear cleaning, and nail trim. My fiance was the one taking our dog to/from the groomer, so I reached out on Instagram a week before the appointment with "inspiration/inspo pictures" for the haircut so they'd know exactly how to groom him and my fiance wouldn't have to worry about explaining it to them since he would be rushing during his lunch break to take our dog to this appointment. They said they'd add the pictures to his file but when the day of his appointment came around, they called me while I was working to ask if I had pictures even though I already sent them and they said they'd add the pictures to his file a week beforehand. When my fiance picked him up, the hair on his face was much rounder than my inspo pictures. I asked the groomer to round it out a little more to match the picture and the outcome was a sloppy, choppy MESS. I requested a partial refund for the face trim and part of the tip to reflect the cheaper overall cost, which the owners graciously gave me. When I was home the next day, I noticed that even the body was cut sloppily. Lisa left long patches on his butt and paws and it looked like she just cut his hair with straight scissors instead of blending it out and making it more of a clean cut. I feel like I could have bought a dog grooming kit on Amazon and done a better job. I reached back out requesting a full refund of the tip which they willingly refunded. The owners handled the situation very professionally, and they were apologetic which I appreciate. That's why I still recommend The Modern Canine for the store itself and will continue to support it by buying toys and treats, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE. Keep your dogs far far away from Lisa. I've since found an amazing and extremely talented groomer to fix the mess Lisa made. This other groomer also agreed that his face trim came out extremely choppy and sloppy. I'll post a review of the lifesaver groomer on my profile if you'd like to see the groomer I highly recommend instead.

Kristen is the best- she's detail-oriented (the long lashes!), and can get rid of some ear matting while still maintaining the long-haired ears (I didn't realize I was only brushing the top layer, and learned from her that day how to brush her properly as a first-time dog mom). The store also has high-quality treats, food, and enrichment toys, along with other items you may want/need, and the owners are helpful and friendly. A great addition to the area!

I believe these issues deserve closer scrutiny. There's also publicly available information from 2019 indicating that this organization was involved in legal proceedings related to record-keeping. Reports suggest that certain health details may not have been accurately disclosed to adoptive families at the time. If you'd like to explore that further, there's information online you can review. I am writing this review because I have never experienced worse customer service in my life. The…read moredogs we saw were absolutely adorable and so sweet, but unfortunately, the staff completely ruined the experience. The employees we dealt with could not have been colder if they tried--especially the woman at the front desk. There is a respectful way to speak to people, especially when you are representing an organization, and this was not it. She was extremely rude, condescending, and completely unprofessional. I have over five years of experience as a waitress, I work as a social worker, and I volunteer at my local dog shelter. In all of those roles, I have never been spoken to as disrespectfully as I was today. She informed us that our application was denied by loudly criticizing our dog of 14 1/2 years--who recently passed away--saying he was overweight, and did so in front of other staff members. It honestly seemed like she took pleasure in delivering this news, which felt incredibly insensitive given that we are still grieving the loss of our dog. This information could have been communicated in a much kinder and more respectful way. Basic compassion and professionalism should not be too much to expect. The experience was so upsetting that it made me question how the animals are treated if this is how people are treated. My family took a long time to feel ready for another dog after losing our Jessie girl, and this was the first time we had considered adopting again since her passing. Instead of a hopeful experience, we were met with hostility and disrespect. I have never written an online review before, but the way we were treated compelled me to speak up. I will never recommend Home for Good Dogs in Berkeley Heights, NJ. Please ensure that staff and volunteers understand the importance of kindness, professionalism, and basic human decency.
