However, there was a clear disconnect with the braider- my daughter ended up with more of a medium-large size. There was also a disconnect when I explained the length I wanted; it was braided shorter than I discussed. Another issued is that they did not have any hair color options available. I had to leave and go to a beauty supply store to purchase the color myself, which I have not experienced with other braiding salons- they typically have a variety of colors in stock. The actual braiding process was also disappointing. The braider used far more gel than necessary and seemed scattered. At one point another braider jumped in to help but it didn't feel like normal teamwork; it felt more like the original braider was frustrated or annoyed. On top of that when you book your appointment, you pay $30 deposit. When it came time to pay the balance they didn't apply the deposit. Lastly, they even charge a fee just to put rollers on the ends and curl the braids. I would not return or recommend.

The hostility that my wife endured upon arrival led to a heated exchange and my wife informed the employees that they were being dismissive and rude. Even when my wife complimented one of the hairdressers for the work they did a year ago, she was met with a negative attitude. Another problematic aspect of the Salon was the choice of music and film played in the company of children. Paired with the hostile exchange and rude customer service upon arrival, I wonder if this was purposeful because a family member who I recommended expressed that child-friendly programming was suggested when her two daughters had their hair braided. The reality is that ​​we've all experienced poor customer service, but the sting seems a bit harsher when we're trying to support our own. It is also jarring when the experience is in the company of young and impressionable adolescents, which is enough for my wife to say that she is NEVER going back to Yonti Hair Braiding and won't be recommending it to any of her friends or associates.

As a result, the stylist was able to do very little with her hair compared to the rest of her friends. Being the only black little girl at her party, this made her feel quite excluded with respect to hair services, and it was devastating to watch her disappointment. I would strongly suggest that if this business continues to offer hair services, they should really hire some stylists that are familiar with more inclusive hair styling for little girls of color . This is absolutely unacceptable for 2022 in New Jersey, especially for a business that offers hair services. And it was simply heartbreaking to watch a my daughter experience this kind of exclusion. And while they are at it, this business might want to consider changing up their website a bit to showcase more inclusive photos of Black and Brown girls.
