I went to get a silk press. It was ok, she definitely cut corners to save time and it left my hair "poofy". She doesn't like when clients have to be somewhere after their appointment, which means that you can't expect her to finish on time. I waited nearly an hour after my appt time for her to finish her last client. It was super annoying read more

Jennifer took extra care with my hair and that's hard to find in hair stylists anymore. I told her all my concerns after having a bad braid job by someone else. She listened attentively to me and took greatest care in my hair. She recommended I cut my ends which were damaged by braiding my hair too much. After a steam treatment and a trim I was back in business. I'll be back again for sure!!! read more

It's been a little over a year since I've been here and to my surprise Jennifer remembered me as soon as I walked in the door. She asked about my kids and everything as if I was just here two weeks ago... I'm sure your saying blah blah blah... So I'll get to the point.... My hair... Jennifer asked me tons of questions about what I wanted what would work best she talked to me about products and styles I guess the point I'm trying to make is she's still incredible!! I got here at 10 for my 10am appointment and I had no wait! This place is still my first and only recommendation and it's definitely a must if you're concerned about hair CARE and not just how you wear your hair. read more

I recently just went to Jewels yesterday. I was looking for a new look and I read reviews on Yelp that this place was worth a try. I'm glad I took the leap of faith cause now I can't trust someone with my hair. First off she came in on her day off, just because it was my graduation, which I Really appreciated. Before she even touched my hair she listened to my hair concerns, goals, and products. She gave me a lot of insight as to what I was doing wrong and why my hair felt the way it did. She read the ingredients to my products and recommended when would be best to use them. NO STYLIST HAS EVER HAD THE KNOWLEDGE OR PATIENCE like Jewel. She is a sweetheart! She shampooed, deep conditioned with a steam towel and cap, blow dried and proceeded to cut my hair. I do not trust anyone with cutting my hair but this cut was legendary. It literally made me look like a woman, my slight bob came out perfect. She even showed me how much she would cut before. I will not be going anywhere else from now on. I can now develop a routine to follow with a fresh start and cut. In a couple months, my hair will be healthier than ever, thanks to Jewels Bottom line: -Great, friendly service -cares about your hair health over rough damaging styling -great price for the work and expertise - amazing blow outs -comfortable environment read more

Jewels Studio - My new haircut in a slight bob, thanks Jewels! - Hair Salons Near Me - Clark, New Jersey

Alas, My hairstylist Jennifer left Shades and opened her own shop. (I'm actually not even positively sure if Shades is till open to be honest.) @ anyrate...Jewels Studio is a small salon with 1 stylist....Jennifer. My opinion of her has not changed. I am still happy with how she cares for my hair and the styles she gives me. (I actually recently got a full head weave and I'm pretty happy with it.) She usually has cupcakes or some other sweet that makes me happy but mad cuz i know I shouldn't have any The prices are inline with what I paid at Shades...a lil more than the norm but not outrageous. Jennifer is very knowledgable when it comes to hair care, different styles, how to care for your own hair and how to fix an issue. I think she is awesome I can't say she specializes in natural hair care cuz she has customers that get relaxers as well..but i am not the only customer with natural hair that she cares for. I've seen a lot of them...and all walk out looking great. I think she is worth a try...I have sent a lot of friends to her...and most leave her with great comments back to me read more

Jennifer is amazing with cutting and hair care. My Saturday wait was extreme- so no more Saturday appointments for me. She even helped me with perfecting the hairstyle I wanted and what would look good on me and she was 100 percent on point. Amazing!!!? read more

The hair salon is small and with a beautiful purple themed decor. As soon as you walk in the owner Jennifer actively acknowledges you (which is very important in my eyes). She asks you if about your hair history and explains to you what your hair might be lacking based on your hair history. The price wasn't too bad I actually only paid around $70.00 and that included: A deep condition( which was fantastic) Shampoo Trim Blow-out Flat Iron/Curl Overall my first visit was a very pleasant one. *** very important: When making your appointment, and your running late please call because the hairstylists will not take you when you arrive you will have to wait. read more

Before I start my review just wanted to announce my review is not based on performance but firmly on the stylist Jennifer disposition. It's been a year since I visited her as my first time was a year ago when I found her via Yelp and from there was glad I did. My first experience was great as she cut my hair to allow for new growth because lets face it my hair was damaged due to my own fault. So she gave me a partial chop.. I wanted to wait until my hair grew to revisit her since my experience beforehand was positive. Which brings this review to the 3 stars would have received a 5 but.... Inquired concerning a hair color I wanted which I showed her a picture off my phone (unfortunately my silly self left the physical product of the color home; a weave) so assumed I was getting the color I inquired plus blond highlights. After she was done, my hair came out nice but since it was rather late in the evening (10pm) when she finished couldn't tell if the color itself was fully extended to cover the entire base with the exception of the highlights.. The next day, I kept looking at my ends in the mirror only to notice my ends were a different color than the base to which I thought was odd. As I wanted a burgundy red wine color for the base and the blond highlights to bring the color out. Although the burgundy color she gave me was not the color I had shown her in my picture overall was happy with the front of my hair because it complimented my complexion but the back of my hair and the ends were not pronounced at all.. The color looked dark brown; Resulting in me contacting her to tell her the very next day.. Her tone was uneasy, she indicated for me to provide pictures to which I text her the pics. After that she leveled down some and said I can come in to get it corrected the next day which was yesterday 5/17.. The moment I arrived, you can tell homegirl was irked by me.. She said there is nothing wrong with the color, as she added dimension by giving my ends a diff color but that is not what I asked for nor paid for. When I called to tell her I wasn't satisfied with the ends I was professional and pleasant. I did not become peevish nor indecent because it can be fixed and I know although a mistake was made, she'll handle it with grace and rectify. But that morning I arrived for her to fix, I was met with a snippy demeanor. Which was odd, as I thought she was nice, but I guess because I asked if she can redo what was supposed to be done the first time, that irked her. No one is perfect and mistakes can be made just a rule of thumb.. From her facial expression to the point she didn't even talk to me unless to tell me it was time for a wash etc.. or is this the color I wanted? she remained quiet and bothered throughout our interaction. However, she would converse with her other patrons so I knew it was me she was irked by.. just because I told her the color I wanted is not shown on my ends..After all of that, lastly she corrected the color and flat ironed my hair nicely, but I will not return.. Stylist should always remain professional and apologize to their client if their client is unhappy with a service..sadly no apology happened.. Stylist should adopt a courteous demeanor and correct the mistake with grace and no attitude irrespective if they think no mistake was made; especially if their client paid for a color they thought they were getting plus giving a nice tip.. in short her disposition turned me off and was unprofessional.. but I wish her the best... P.S. She is no longer @ 1960 but now @1910 Springfield Ave.. Maplewood read more

Both the owner and the staff are very personable and welcoming. Unfortunately the two strand twist set that Lisa gave me just didn't cut it. My hair looked like crispy ramen noodles. read more

I have struggled for a long time to find a salon that could tame and care for my natural curls. I have gone to a few Dominican salons in the past and while the end results were OK, I found that they did not know how to properly and safely detangle my curls. After reading some of the reviews, I decided to try Jewels and I am very glad I did. Malik the stylist shampooed, deep-conditioned and gave me a "silky blowout". The results were phenomenal; my hair looked healthy, shiny and had beautiful movement about it. If you do decide to go, please keep in mind that it is a small salon and therefore you should expect to be there for a while (plan your day accordingly). The prices are a bit more than I am accustomed to, but they do such a great job! It's definitely worth it! read more

I had high hopes for Jewels Studio after reading some reviews. My experience was disappointing. Jewels was the first stop in my busy day. I got there a little before 9:30a Which is their advertised opening time. To my dismay they had not opened yet, so I waited, and waited, and waited. It was 10:10 the shop was opened up. Then I sat and waited some more while the young lady who came after me, but was also there before the shop opened was shampooed. Finally it was my turn, as Malik was shampooing me, Jennifer made her way in somewhere around 10:30. I wasn't specific or picky about a style. I was primarily concerned about my hair care, I got a deep conditioner and a trim. To style my hair she sat me applied a product to define my curls and sat me under a dryer, simple and easy. The price was reasonable, but if time is money, I invested way too much for what I got. read more

Jewel is so gifted. I went to her expecting to possibly have to get a relaxer after not having had a relaxer in a year. I questioned the possibility to have straight hair without a relaxer well Jewel made me a believer! I received so many compliments. I finally have a Master Stylist! read more

Now I finally see what the rave was about. Jewels Studio was great from the time I walked in to the time I left--very hard to get them on the phone, but a great experience in person. First off, her new location is now in Maplewood, NJ, on springfield ave. My first impression was that it was close or she was still in south orange (unsure of which was the new address), so I sent my boyfriend in to see if the shop was the new one. It was. Walking in, I was immediately greeted from everyone in the shop--even the other clients, so I wasn't sure who Jennifer was until she began to ask me can she help me, etc. I told her I had an appointment and she immediately knew who I was. She told me how much longer she'd be with the previous client and to have a seat. I was in the chair a half an hour after my appointment--not bad at all. The first thing she noticed was that my hair was dry, then she started asking me about the products I use and my hair history, etc--really putting the 'care' in haircare like previous reviewers have said. She answered all my questions. We quickly moved to the wash station where she washed, conditioned, and deep conditioned my hair with lovely Design Essential products, that I now think I would like to after to my collection. While I was under the dryer, she took her previous client from under the dryer. Soon, I was back in the chair, being blow dried, trimmed, and silky wrapped (or whatever they call it). I love that she told me everything she was putting in my hair. Each of us talked a little about our personal lives, and it was great. My only complaints(hence the 4 stars) was that 1)Her location needs to be advertised, or it can be easily missed, 2) the space is really small, which makes me think about what a jam-packed day looks like (btw she did not overbook her clients out of greediness), and 3)Her workers were not friendly. They both were braiding clients hair, while one had headphones in, and the other was just silent. I cannot stand when my hairdresser doesn't converse with me. Other than that, I was glad I booked with Jewels, very satisfied that it was Jennifer who did my hair, and would continue to visit there for as long as Jennifer is doing my hair! The atmosphere was really peaceful--music wasn't too loud, not too much loud talking. It was a real getaway that I was delighted to have found. read more

Malik is very good! He's really attentive to your "hair-story," explains the products he's using, and most important to me, is able to get my transitioning hair straight. Overall, Jewels Studio is a small and cozy shop. The vibe is warm and so far, I've found both Jewel (a.k.a Jennifer) and Malik to have been equally warm and inviting to their clients. Oh, and their big fans of Jane Carter Solution products, which I L-O-V-E. 4 Stars! read more

I've been going to Jewel for almost 2 years. She is super reliable even when she's had a long day or is tired. She goes by appointments, as she is the only person who works at the salon, so try to make one a week ahead (especially if its for the weekend). read more

Great experience getting hair care products from here. Walked in off the street to inquire about the shampoos they sell and the representative was very knowledgeable about their products on hand. Walked away with a good deal. Definitely recommended for hair care read more

I went to Jewels Studio in July of 2013. I'm not someone who usually post reviews, but I remember it's because I saw all of the great reviews in the past that drew me to this hair salon. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner Jennifer. At the time she was the only one at the salon that was working. She was working on someone and had another person waiting.I had an appointment for 4pm and she didn't start my hair until 5pm. The reason for the deduction in rating. She did my Big Chop, which I was very nervous about. Overall, she is very knowledgeable about hair, and the products that work well with different hair textures. I felt very comfortable in the hair salon and was out within 1 hour of being serviced. I would come back to this salon. I just hope that the wait isn't as long the next time. read more

This place is amazing! It's owned by my hairdresser of about 6 years, Jennifer. I have followed her from Shades hair studio to Jewels, The new salon that she now owns. She really knows how to whip my hair in to shape and gives great haircuts. The staff is super attentive and kind and their level of expertise is quite impressive. It's hard to find a reliable, knowledgeable salon that understands African American hair and can take care of your hair the traditional way while using great products and keeping to a professional look. Definitely caters to professional women with relaxed or natural hairstyles. Thank you! read more

I have been transitioning my hair for the last 6 months and I wanted to work with someone who could still straighten my hair. I decided to go to Jewels because it was close and I don't haven't had any regrets! I get more compliments on my hair and my new cut than I ever did with other sylists. Malik has been doing my hair since I started going there. I find the staff there really courteous and I like the small, cozy environment. read more

Jennifer hooked up my hair after a cut gone totally wrong from a different salon! My hair looked so silky after she was done with it and had movement it never had before. The best part about it was I experienced no heat damage after my blow out and flat iron! When I washed my hair later, my curls looked even better than before! I am truly pleased with her work and will only go to Jennifer. :) She is top notch! read more

It's been a few weeks post cut and I must say Lisa did a BANGIN' job. Cuting natural hair ain't for the weak...her skilzz are on and poppin...can't given the spot five stars because way down, deep in my soul I'm feeling like the styling part would bea bit wack (saw a few folks gettin' "did" while I got my cut) take this with a grain of salt though cuz I DID NOT get styled. Anyway, for a cut do not delay...get your butt in Lisa's chair. For folks who are scared to loose length go somewhere else...she cuts and cuts well and does not shy away from taking off inches if that's what you need. Moi, I don't mind it's just hair and it will certainly grow back and looking better than ever. I'm happy dancing...I FINALLY found someone who understands how to cut my hair-Whew. read more

I have been in NJ since June and I have been looking for someplace to get my hair done since. (Why is it so hard for a black woman to find a good hair salon?) I wanted someplace closer to where I live but was unable to find one. I had a black tie event to attend and I could hold off no longer. I read the reviews on Jewels and there weren't any complaints about a botched hair job, so I took the chance. I made my appt. with Jennifer the owner. Upon arrival I was seen right away she assessed my hair. I wanted a relaxer and she gave me one. There was another lady in the shop and everyone was pleasant. The only think that got me was the price. I have NEVER paid that much in my life to get my hair relaxed. It was over 100$!! I move around a lot. My husband is in the military. I have lived in VA, NY, IN & CA so I know my prices. While the price left little to be desired. I love my hair she did a great job---in the end you get what you pay for! read more

I've been going to jewels for awhile now. I'm very big on good hair care product which is provided. However this is not the place to get a nice up-to-date haircut or design. It caters to very simple hairstyles. If you want a nice summer or fall look to really bring out your beauty Jewels fall short....unfortunately. Right now, Jewels a back up when I simply need a wash n curl. read more
