Was VERY disappointed..... after seeing all the raving reviews and hearing about their amazing customer service (and most important to me, the fact that they do nothing before scheduling a consultation), I was looking forward to going to STRANDZ. I called on this past Saturday and was told to come in Tuesday or Saturday before 6:00 for a consultation. I decided to go yesterday (which was a Tuesday afternoon), so I left work early in order to get there no later than 5:30, as I commute and it required me taking 2 buses. When I got there, at 5:22, a young lady opened the door and told me they were closed, she was the only one there, and she would be unable to give me a consultation. I told her what I was told on Saturday and without apology, told me to come back tomorrow after 9:00 or Saturday at the same time. I was so disappointed that I just said thank you and left. Maybe I am just in my feelings, but I was really looking forward to my consultation and annoyed that I took 2 buses for nothing. The young lady was not unpleasant, however, she could have been a bit nicer and at least apologized for the inconvenience. Long story short, unsure about whether I will go back or not. read more

I mean...can they do hair? YES. I have friends that go there and their twists and such are always very nice. Do they CARE for you hair? Some what...nothing special...no real suggestions...i went with a lot of ?s (I had just gone natural) and...well yeah....nothing great. Are they pricey?? Not bad actually....coils and trim 60 or 65. How busy are they? Now this is why they got a 2-2.5 instead of like a 3.5 (if i could do halves).....last time i tried to make an appt....the wait was two months.....what the hell kinda sense does that make????????? And on top of that I have to wait two months for an appointment, I get there, you coil, but you won't take the coils out for a "coil-out" look? REALLY????? PFT... I found another place in livingston called Shades and I dont have to deal with the that but i may not even have looked for another place if not for the wait time. I'm surprised I'm the first to write a review. Strandz is a very popular natural hair salon. Anyways, I've been going to Strandz for several months up until about May (because I shaved my head) and they were a very professional natural hair establishment. I went to a couple other hair salons and they seemed disorganized and unprofessional. Initially, it was tough getting an early appointment for Strandz because they were always busy and my appointments were about 3-4 weeks out. When you have a bad hair day, you want to get your hair done that day. LOL! Anyhoo, they were worth the wait and their prices were reasonable. During that time, I was sporting loc's and my regular "loctitian" was Alnisa. She is very professional and unlike some beauticians who tend to talk a lot and move slow, she actually doesnt talk much and she works pretty quick. FYI, the shop is owned by sisters. I was referred to Strandz by a co-worker. I had just cut my dreadlocks and needed help styling my natural hair. After eight years with locks I became very frustrated with how to manage my hair. So I called Strandz, came in so they could see my hair, made an appointment and the rest is history. My stylist's name is Samayah, but all the ladies in the shop are equally talented. They are very professional and their is rarely any wait time for service. They do not overbook. Or leave you under the dryer while they start another head. I am most certainly a fan of Strandz. I have been to the salon about three times and this last check in was for a consult. A rule they have is if it has been several months since the last visit your hair could have changed and a consult needs to take place. The consult is quick and they don't even touch your hair they just take a look to confirm its natural. I went for my appointment was pleased to see they have private parking. Upon entering my stylist was ready and I didn't even sit in the waiting room. My hair was thoroughly washed and conditioned, she then blow dried my hair on low / cool setting. Samayah they stylist was very pleasant, she and I had a nice conversation throughout about everything from food to hair care. She made me very comfortable and worked quickly. Strandz is the worst place to get your hair done at! The beauticians are unprofessional and immature! When you call to make an appointment they play on the phone and lie and say that your beautian is not in today and that you can call her cell phone even tho you called on the beautian's Cell phone. They inform you that you called the store instead of the Beautian's Cell phone. The lies they tell but the joke is on them because you can not leave a text message on a landline soooooo they deserve the Donkey Of The Day Award! Furthermore they gossip about their customers and take to many breaks while doing your hair......time is money! They need to grow up!!! read more

I have been natural for going on seven years. When I first got a natural style a "comb coil" Al'Nissa did a great job on my hair. I didn't continue to go to Strandz and was unable to get an appointment as quickly as I would have liked. That was about two years ago. Since then I've become a regular. The prices are very reasonable. I have thick hair and I never have paid more than $75 for a style. That $75 was for a very small two strand. All my updo's are fly. And I'm not saying that to be vain. Whenever I get my hair done SOMEONE is complimenting it. They also know how to cut natural hair without doing a BC. They are professional and do hair quickly. My appointments are always kept on time and I am out of the chair within 2.5 hours. I will say for any new person looking to go to Strandz... Stop in so they can see your hair. They do not take new appt's over the phone. And yes, do not expect to get your hair done within one month. The client's at Strandz are very LOYAL and book their appointments well in advance. I made an appt for the following week due to MY schedule, Gennine did my hair was very nice, held great conversation, and gave me a few types. I originally went to Strandz a number of years back, but finally had to stop because it was so hard to get a hold of anyone to make an appointment. When I called, no one would pick up, and when I left messages, they would regularly go unreturned. The stylists were friendly enough, but the unprofessionalism finally caused me to look for better service elsewhere. Cut to now, and I recently went to Strandz because of convenience. I was told that an appointment could not be made unless I came in and made it in person. Massively inconvenient, especially since I was coming in from out of town, but I went in to make an appointment. The hairdressers barely spoke and were not in the least bit welcoming. The hairdresser I was assigned to did not introduce herself and barely said hello. When I went in a few days later for the actual appointment, I was pleased with the way my hair looked afterwards and the speed in which it was done. Conversely, the hairdresser still did not introduce herself or say much of anything, and the shop could be kept better. A few months later I called to make an appointment, and was told---yet again---that there was no way they could do this over the phone. I would have to come in in person. I was referred to this salon by a church member of mines whose hair always looks fabulous back in 2010. The salon is great, I however didn't learn much about my hair type and what products work best for my natural hair texture. I tried following up for an appointment and referred a friend to join me and found it difficult to get the style I wanted, they pretty much insisted on it being coils or twist. Also I wanted color and they told me I would need 2 appointments for that service. I usually don't write reviews on places I've gone to get loc maintenance, but I had to say something about this salon. I am only in New Jersey for the summer, so I had to find a salon to care for my hair. I had a bad experience 2 weeks ago at another natural hair salon, ending in an allergic reaction on my scalp! I had to wash out my new maintenance after only having it in for a few days. Thankfully I found Strandz. I was greeted with courteous smiles at the door as let them know I was interested in loc maintenance. One beautician actually stopped what she was doing, walked over and took a glance at my hair and scalp. As we discussed appt dates, I was delighted to find out I would be scheduled 1 1/2 weeks later. With a competitive price point, I made sure I was going to be there for my appt. But it gets better... As I headed to my car OUTSIDE one beautician caught me and asked if I would be available that day. Mind you, this was around 5:45 pm and I saw they closed at 6 pm. I told them I didn't want them to stay late and she said it was okay. I didn't tell her about my experience of a few days ago with my allergic reaction, and I recommended I used products that I have at home (of course they weren't with me). She assured me their products were non-allergenic, gentle, and that they could use an anti-dandruff shampoo. They did a professional job on my hair that day in a calm atmosphere, and I can attest that the products were right for my scalp and hair. I had a meeting with execs that friday, so the timing was perfect. She was gentle with concern of any discomfort I may be having. I am glad I've found this salon. I have been going to Strandz since March of 2002. Al-Nisa is the Loctician who started me with double-strand twists. Since then my hair has taken on a life of its own. I have had my locs cut, colored, styled etc. I would not trust my hair to the hands of anyone that does not work outside this shop. All the ladies are professional and I have been paying $60. For a loc-retouch for going on 12 years now. The service at Strandz is excellent. The dynamic among the stylists is great. They are extremely funny and very professional but wouldn't mind if you put headphones in to listen to your own music or a good book while you're in the chair. I have seen them do all types of natural hair in many lovely styles while getting my own hair done. They're the best. Just be prepared to sit for hours depending on the length of your hair and the key to getting an appointment is to make 2 appointments at once bc they fill up very fast. I've tried to get appointments at Strandz on three separate occasions over the last six months, and each time I've called to schedule a time to come in, not one person has called me back. I am not a fan of this salon. I waited for 2 months for an appointment and I must I was not pleased at all. I went to get my natural hair cut into a tapered short do, colored and styled(twist out). To make a long story short, I was told I could not get my hair colored because I had to do an allergy test which was not told to me at the time I visited the salon to speak to a stylist t book my appointment. Next, my so called tapered cut I received was more of a botched cut job than anything. Not only that the twist out that the stylist attempted to put in my hair was a mess. I was charged 75 dollars for the mess. Instead of making a scene I paid the stylist and walked out as an unhappy customer. Unfortunately I had a very unpleasant experience at Strandz. I've read great reviews so I wanted to try their services. I had just did the big chop and now I was in search of a place where I could go to receive help with my natural hair journey. I just dropped in because when you call they will not give you an appointment until they confirm you are all natural. Ok, I drove the hour in hopes of getting an appointment once they confirmed. Well. The stylist took one look at my hair and said I can not do anything with that. I explained to her I have not had a perm in over a year and I had just cut off the permed ends 2 weeks prior. I didn't know what to do with it myself so I had used a flat iron on it which straightened it however it was natural, unpermed hair. She then proceeded to say then you may have heat damage. I would like to iterate here that I was not sitting in the salon chair but instead I was on the other side of the room and she was doing someone else's hair so she didn't even examine my hair yet she was able to tell me my hair was damaged. I felt so defeated. I felt like I made the wrong choice to cut my shoulder length permed hair down to the 5 inches of new growth I had. I was ready to walk out and perm my hair. In the end the stylish gave me 2 options, go get braids for the next 3 months and then come back or go home and wash it then come back so she can see what my hair would do. No, she did not say let her wash my hair so she can see what styles we can do with my hair. Needless to say I left not desiring to follow through with any of those options but continued on my quest to find a natural hair stylist to help me along this journey and I am fortunate and happy to say I did found a wonderful woman who's helping me along my natural hair journey so thank you Strandz for turning me away because I am with exactly who I need to be with. read more

I had an appointment on 7/17/13, I apologize for not remembering the stylist name. When you walk in the salon, your back facing the door, her station is the 2nd one on the left side. The young lady may know how to style african american natural hair BUT she doesn't know a darn thing about hair care. She didn't condition my hair, she didn't detangle my hair, there was never a consultation done not even when I went there to schedule my appointment (there recording states so on their voicemail). She kept pulling & snapping my hair. I requested comb coils. Truly wasn't pleasant experience. My hair was dry. If you consider yourself a stylist for natural hair, you should use good quality hair products and should know which products are best for your clients hair type. She is definitely not educated on HAIR CARE for naturals. Also you break & snap the hair combing it with a small comb as you style the hair trying to comb it thru as you coil. Ridiculous!! read more
