I got a steak burrito for lunch here a couple of days ago. The steak wasn't very warm or even seasoned well; it was bland and kind of rubbery. The employees weren't rude, but they also weren't very welcoming. I've been eating at Barberito's for years now and it seems that this is more common now than it ever has been. Really used to be my go to Barbs in athens. Always busy but very friendly, generous portions and fresh vegetables and ingredients. Things seem to have gone south over the summer and i hardly have the urge to even attempt coming here anymore due to the total opposite of what this location used to be like. The thing that really irks me is how they now charge you for extra ingredients, like cheese (not queso), without telling you. In another instance, i was told they were out of sweet tea. If you have a pulse, you know that this is a lie and such a simple fix. The staff was so lazy that night i took a long hiatus of not even eating at barberitos anymore. The manager here seems like a really hard worker so i don't want to pin any complaints on him, he can only do so much. This is my first Yelp review & this place was so bad that I had no choice but to warn others. This is probably the worst experience I've ever had at a Tex-Mex restaurant ever. The food was low quality, the service very rushed, and quantity was more than frugal. The server told me that they needed more rice because the batch that was there was hard and crusty, and yet proceeded to base my burrito (& my girlfriends) with that batch of rice. The chicken was cold and tasteless. The produce was obviously left out and not "fresh" as advertised. The "chips with every entree" was more like they counted every chip they gave you by hand. I know burritos. And believe me when I tell you that Barberitos is the shining jewel in the Athens burgeoning burrito scene. Between Moe's, Willy's and several also-rans you have more than enough choices for a big burrito, so why choose a local joint? Other than the fact that they don't yell at you when you walk in? *Moe's cough cough* First, the slogan "way fresher, way better" actually holds some weight. Their produce is super fresh and many times locally sourced. Next, their chips and salsa are the best of the bunch. Moe's chips are very pedestrian, but the ones here are similar to Willy's chips, except arguably fresher and thinner (a huge plus in my book.) Also, if you're a vegetarian, or just adventurous, the tofu option is a refreshing change from the foam-rubber chew toys of other fast-food chains. One downside? I do miss my Willy's adobe chicken. Barberitos can't match it. But their beer selection quickly suppresses any negative emotion. read more

I dream about Barberitos when I am not eating there. I first had this back in 2001, and I have never found a better burrito. I have lived in California, Texas, and Florida, and Moes, Chipotle, and Qdoba just cannot match the freshness that is found in these burritos. Chipotle has a pre-packaged taste in my opinion, and Moe's is less so, but neither hold a candle to the wonderful fresh vegetables or the rich and flavorful meats in a Barberito's burrito. The size of each burrito is HUGE, and they come with chips that pair exquisitely with the fresh salsa bar. When I lived in Athens, the staff recognized me and were always super kind. Only downside? If you have never ordered there before, it may take you a minute to get the lingo. But, that hardly warrants a lost star, since you will be more than willing to practice ordering over and over again. read more

I am very familiar with Barberitos and even worked for a separate owner at one point for 6 years. I was very disappointed when I came in and was nickel and dimed to death. The portions were sub par and when I asked for more cheese, I was charged an extra .50. I have no problem paying extra for adding queso to an entree but would atleast like the portion I am paying for. When added to a mini burrito and taco I was charged $2.60 for not even a half or the portion you are supposed to receive. The food was very bland compared to other barbs. Wasn't too satisfied with this visit and probably won't be back. read more

This location is kind of hit-and-miss as far as service and quality of food....but when it's great, it's the best! When they're not so busy during the day I think they could do better with cleaning the place up, including the restrooms, which kinda smell weird. The staff is OK depending on who helps you, and I know it's gotta be tough keeping college kids genuinely interested in rolling burritos. The food itself is fresh and good, unless you go during an off time. Sometimes I'll come in around 2pm and their after-lunch setup is sometimes lacking as far as quantity and freshness. Understandable that they may not stock the food to the gills at this time, but sometimes they're out of what I want. Also, I wish they had more consistency as far as the quantity of each food item that is put into the burrito, since sometimes I totally get shortchanged on meat/tofu unless I ask for extra. Then some other employees load it up, so you never know what you'll get. I think with some more employee training this place could be 5 stars, but they've got a little work to do. read more

Barberitos is something like Chipotle, but with a few more options to choose; the menu includes tacos, nachos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, and salads as well. The burritos are pretty fucking great, also, I love the way the burrito is rolled. Not too fat where it becomes awkard to eat. About 7 dollars for the burrito and 3 dollars for a taco. This was my first time and it will be my last. I ordered the taco bowl salad and the best part was the tortilla bowl! I chose the ground turkey because I didn't have a choice of ground beef. It was way over cooked and had a bad flavor. The lettuce was not fresh and I didn't have a choice of cheese. They used white cheese and I think cheddar would of been way better tasting. The salsas were bland and not tasty. The sweet tea was bitter and not sweet. You would think that they could at least get that right! I grew up in Los Angeles. I also lived in Texas. I know what real Mexican cuisine is and what American Mexican cuisine is. This is the latter. Now, there's no shame in burritos, nachos, etc. being American concoctions. I'm just pointing this out because if you're thinking carnitas tacos, mole, and chile rellenos, this is not that kind of food. For me, this is a type of Chipotle meets Baja Fresh. It's fast food. You can get a spinach tortilla. They have "queso" in metal tins. Again, not a judgement but just stating why this is a uniquely American slant on the cuisine. Pluses for me are that the staff was friendly, the portions are very generous, and it was quick to order. Why this is a three-star review is that the food seemed rather bland. The salsa at the salsa bar lacked acid, heat, and salt. The ingredients themselves were under-seasoned. It's a little pricey in terms of quality, but you get your money's worth for quantity. There's nothing amazing about this place, but it's college kids working a sandwich line. What are you expecting? If you're looking for complex flavors this isn't it. However, if you just want a burrito with staple ingredients and you aren't a fan of spiciness, this could work for you. While I don't drool for Chipotle, I will say that they beat this place without question. read more

Not good. Chips were soggy and nasty. They took the salsa away and didn't replace it????? The floor was absolutely disgusting and there was shit every where. I have lived in Athens two years now and thought Barbs would be a great place to take some friends that were visiting for lunch. Wow what a mistake! The guy who first took my order (he might have been new which isn't his fault) starts making my order wrong. The real trouble comes in when this other lady who was working the toppings starts asking him what he is making. He tells her that I asked for one thing (which I did not) and so the lady starts talking to me and addressing me like I am an idiot. She starts banging things around and at one point obnoxiously throws the incorrect meal in the trash can. This establishment clearly doesn't have a 'the customer is always right attitude'. Then as I'm paying she tries to put on this smile and hopes I enjoy my food like she didn't just act incredibly rude to me. As my friends are eating she comes over and asks if it's "the best food we have ever had" and "if we are enjoying our meal immensely" - very much overcompensating for her rude service earlier. For food that isn't super cheap you would think they would treat their customers with a little more respect- even when handling a confusion. read more

Hands down, Barberitos is my favorite of the build-your-own burrito spots. Sometimes the product varies, based on who's building it and how fresh their veggies are, but most of the time it's on point. They have many tortilla options, including whole wheat and smaller (10") size. They also have tons of healthy options, like spinach, multiple salsas (including roasted corn), and guacamole, so it's not neccessary to load up on cheese and sour cream for flavor. Without the chips, this is the healthiest (and tastiest) fast food around. read more
