Very nice people, but I went to a curl specialist who proceeded to cut off every single curl on my head. I do not have a single ringlet left, and I look like a cross between Ronald McDonald and Lionel Ritchie. By far, by FAR the ugliest I have ever looked and the worst haircut of my entire life. I simply do not understand how this happened, and my hair grows incredibly slow. I had been taking hair growth vitamins since March -- 8 capsules a day -- in anticipation of a haircut that would not be too short. My main stylist has been Sergio but I have had to use different stylist at Barbara and Barbara for the past 1 year due to my own time constraints. Needed to get my hair trimmed but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg like I've done for the past 10 years. Went here for the first time, and Jordan was my stylist. While I was nervous as he trimmed my hair, he was actually taking his time to fix what other 2 other stylists did when my hair was cut really short 2 moths ago. He showed me how to use a brush that wasn't the typical big roller brush so that I could still achieve shiny, straight hair. Mind you, I have coarse, thick Asian hair. Love it (see below), but I wanted to note at the top that it is **cash only**. I just happened to have cash on me. Would've been screwed otherwise. I've found it! I'm pretty awful at being a "regular" at any type of hair place. However, I think I've found *the one*. I am 1) pretty cheap and 2) really terrible and descriptions. So I showed up to B&B not wanting to pay much, having cut my own hair into a terrible (but not completely unsightly) chin length bob, and with no idea of direction. Enter Sergio. I told him I wanted to clean up my self-cut mess and simultaneously still look feminine. He made sure I was comfortable with him cutting off quite a bit of hair, and he did his thing. He asked a lot of questions about daily style routine and preferences (which is super important but no one ever asks), and he told me to let give him a shout if I had any issues or questions with my hair. It has the exact opposite feel as a stuffy upscale salon, which I thoroughly appreciate. Though the products they use are high end. I enjoyed my haircut experience from shampoo to finishing touches. They not only wash, cut and style your hair but will answer any questions you have along the way and boy did I have a lot of questions. They told me products they recommended and easy techniques to use everyday. I personally don't dye my hair but I can tell you from seeing friends hair that they are wizards of hair coloring. I was looking for a new salon and decided to try Barbara&Barbara. The location was within walking distance, the prices are right and the products they use are all cruelty-free (and mostly vegan). I booked an appointment and was excited to try this salon. I arrived a little late (but Eleanor was running late so it worked) and I was offered a choice of water, tea or PBR. Once Eleanor was ready for me, we had a brief discussion on my hair. My hair was at a length that just wasn't working for me and I told her that. I told her I wanted a bob. I had two requirements: 1. I'm a wash and wear girl so nothing that requires styling and 2. Needs to be above my shoulder but below my chin. That I didn't want super short hair. Well I got one of my two requests. My hair is shorter than my chin, which means about 6 inches we're cut off and I'm looking at 6 months of growing out. The cut is amazing and Eleanor knows what she's doing, however, I'm not thrilled with the outcome or the fact that I have to grow it out again. I won't be back. read more

I just ran across some photos taken of me before I stared using this salon and I was kind of horrified. All of the comments about Francesca's knowledge and passion are true. She made me feel very comfortable going for a much shorter cut. She recommended a fantastic product that I use daily. The product was pricey, but it lasted 3 months, so I will purchase it again. I came here in October-ish 2016 on a recommendation from a woman with beautiful curly hair who said she got a Devacut here. I figured I'd make the trek and see if they could do anything to salvage my thinning, unmanageable 3b hair. When I called to make an appointment, they told me that the one Deva-certified stylist had a 3-4 month wait list, but the receptionist assured me that some other stylist (a male, whose name I've forgotten now) would be able to take care of me. I reluctantly agreed to see him. People with curly hair know that it's a special beast, and not just any stylist can effectively cut curly hair. I'd been seeing the same woman at the same salon in my hometown in CT for about 6 years but when I moved to Chicago I knew I needed to find someone local, and with the reviews for B&B and a personal recommendation, I figured I was safe. I was wrong. My stylist examined my dry hair to decide the best way to cut it, and then proceeded to wash it. He did not know what I meant when I told him I was following the "Curly Girl" method (no silicones - common among curlies) and didn't seem to feel comfortable not shampooing my hair. He left me to dry under one of those old school dryers for ages which poofed my hair up and made me look like a lion. The cut, after all was said and done, was haphazard and left me with an awkward chunk of shorter hair on one side that I've since had trouble hiding. It was a cheap haircut, but I've been paying for it every day since. Needless to say I never went back. If you're going to come here, come for their coloring services or wait for the Deva-certified stylist, otherwise don't waste your time. read more

After having a very bad haircut at another salon in River North a year ago, Barbara&Barbara was a breath of VERY fresh, crisp, clean air. My stylist, Francesca, is obviously passionate and knowledgable with what she does. Not only is she a fabulous stylist, she's a total sweetheart who really knows how to engage with her clients. I wish more people could be conversationalists like Francesca - she tells funny and interesting stories while trying to learn more about her client. Francesca gave me my second DevaCut, and I must say: she does it better. She styled and shaped my hair exactly how I wanted it!! Not only did I have a great experience with my lovely stylist, everyone else at the salon was so friendly and welcoming. They offer drinks to their customers, they aren't afraid to chat you up if you're open to it, and everyone is very relaxed and kind. I really like the decor, too: they have a striking piece of wall art full of gorgeous, bright colors. There's a table up front populated with various cute, informative books. This review is in regards to the haircut-I have never had a worse cut. Even the hack job at Supercuts wasn't this bad. The stylist said she was going to add texture. Ok cool, I haven't had that done before I'll give it a shot. Well, it turns out that just means a ridiculous amount of really poorly planned layers. (If she had mentioned layers, I would have said no.) The hair on the crown of my head is 3 inches shorter than the underside, and the layers are done in chunks. It is completely asymmetrical, something I definitely did not ask for, and it sticks out like crazy in some spots. (I will mention that my hair is naturally straight.) I want to cry over this mess of hair, I won't be able to look in the mirror for at least six months until the super short layers can grow out enough to get it fixed. I actually did cry over the price tag, $55. That is a ton of money to pay to look this ugly. I went to this particular stylist and salon because my friend gets the cutest haircut from them. I would love my money back. UPDATE: I tried for a week with the haircut, different styles and such, turns out I have to change the part to cover up the chunk of hair that's missing. Ok fine. New part. Still upset about the cost though, I called the salon. I was not expecting the kind and understanding response that I received, pleasantly surprised. I'd had a couple great haircuts here and decided to get my box brown hair lightened to a medium blonde. Unfortunately, it didn't react well to the chemicals and didn't look like what I'd imagined, so I emailed the salon and got a very fast response. Within a week (and it only took a week because I can only weekends-- I know they had availability sooner) one of the owners, Mandie, saw me for free and got my hair spot on with a different process that she chose based on how the hair had responded to the initial treatment. She was friendly, took the time to explain everything, and helped me get my hair to a lovely cool blonde. I am really happy with my experience here and so relieved that they fixed the bad reaction so quickly and for free. It's also super important to me to support businesses who hire queer people and people of color, and it's a very diverse staff with a lot of different talents. Plus, they give you beer!
