Jamie W and I managed to hit four different bars in Montreal's Gay Village over our vacation (see…read morereview links below). We found this one had the most relaxing vibe, especially in the early evening before activity on Sainte-Catherine began to percolate. This bar is mostly known for the access they provide patrons to thousands of music videos available through a mobile app. Somebody must've already programmed a lot of Depeche Mode and Erasure music, which was perfectly fine with Jamie since that's his jam. Meantime we sat out on the terrace and leisurely ordered a couple of rounds. First up was a pair of fruity lookalike C$11 drinks, Bellini à la Peche and Limoncello Spritz (Photo 9). The peachy concoction had prosecco and peach schnapps, jujube, and syrup. The spritz combined limoncello, prosecco, and soda. Our libations were so refreshing we went for a second round of same-price drinks, Berrylicious (strawberry slush & white rum) and Jungle Bird (dark rum, Campari & pineapple) (Photo 10). They were even buzzier than the first round. Our one nitpick with the slushie cocktails was that we were hoping they would be frozen, but we didn't whine about it. COCKTAILS - 4 stars...fruity and refreshing, just not frozen AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...pretty laid back SERVICE - 4 stars...an attentive bartender and server TOTAL - 4 stars...bring back the Human League! Certainly makes branding easier, and Jamie W and I knew what the vibe would be even before we got here. Rest easy it wasn't a fetish-crazed space like a sweaty scene from "Cruising". No, on the evening we went, it was quite casual with the hirsute DJ playing tunes that were a bit too loud for this codger's ears. Although there was a lively back room, we ended up hanging upstairs where we could overlook the action (Photo 2). We must've felt pretty comfortable because we returned in the afternoon. It was comparatively empty, but we were happy to see the slushie machines on full whirl. That was it for us. Jamie went for the C$13.05 Strawberry Daiquiri, and I had the C$13.04 Pina Colada (Photo 10). Both were quite refreshing with a welcome kick. After all, aren't slushies the libations of choice among the leather bear crowd? I believe it. Following the rainbow ribbon in the center of Rue Sainte-Catherine, we decided to make a stop here first because we heard it was the type of low-key bar that helps acclimate newcomers to the neighborhood. Located across from the Beaudry metro station, it definitely felt like the social hub. The fully occupied patio was where most of their patrons gathered, so we decided to sit at a high-top table inside. It was getting lonely because apparently nobody sits inside at 7PM. We started our evening with a couple of C$16 Aperol Spritzes (Photo 7). They were indeed refreshing as we contemplated some bar bites on their menu. Feeling peckish, we decided to order two comfort items. We split the C$15 Grilled Cheese, a not-bad rendition that double loaded the cheese with mozzarella and cheddar for a substantial pull and added caramelized onions into a chewy ciabatta roll (Photo 6). We probably could've stopped there, but then we ordered the C$6 Corn Chips with Vegan and Sour Cream, a noncommittal version of nachos we didn't finish (Photo 8). We soon moved onto the next bar. DRINKS / FOOD - 3 stars...spritzed fine, middling bar bites AMBIANCE - 4 stars...sleekest spot in the village SERVICE - 3.5 stars...industrious crew here TOTAL - 3 stars....decent starter for an evening of debauchery RELATED - Exploring Montreal? Food: I've had the Hangover Tater Tots, and they're awesome. Other food I've had has been great. Friendly, and welcoming, and they offer suggestions and such. Great people. Ambiance: the atmosphere is casual, with hints of gay bar. I meant a place to eat casually where calories are just figments of our imagination. This place looked pretty popular but still had plenty of room on their terrace late into the afternoon. Jamie W and I didn't know this restaurant was part of a broader chain. However, it became obvious when we looked through the laminated photo menu. Smashburgers and related diner fare appeared to be the specialties here. There was definitely a TGI Friday's vibe about the gluttonous food and the lackluster service. Jamie ordered the C$23 Mac Cheeseburger, a carbopalooza of mac & cheese with cornichons (Photo 9), a guilty pleasure with a bit of crunch. I went for the C$23 Holy Swiss, a standard mushroom cheeseburger with caramelized onions, BBQ sauce, and an excess of mayo. I went for the lettuce wrap for a C$2 surcharge (Photo 10). It came with soggy fries, and our C$3.75 mugs of Coke Zero helped get the food down our gullets (Photo 8). As an avid drag race watcher, I was so excited to visit a drag bar. I booked a ticket days in advance and planned a trip to Montreal around it. I get there at 11.50 for the lady boom boom haha thing.. go in and am waiting for a bar tender- mind you, I was waiting a while and the White patrons came up.. automatically the bartender, skipped me and went to them.. so, as more people come up, I wave my hands hi- to get attention. I feel this Asian lady Jam into my left side and I'm like wtf.. and she's like we have seats here and I am like okay, I get that but I just wanted a drink.. her white male friend and Asian male friend proceed to start yelling at me telling I am yelling at them on some Karen ish.. they proceed to try to push into me.. Now I am telling back them to back eff up because... I hadn't even seen them and don't know who these demons are. I ask the bartender.. she starts yelling at me.. so now my social anxiety is on level 1000 because i just wanted a drink. I move to the front to get away and then get a tap on my shoulder from this white woman claiming to be the owner of the bar, and says that I am standing where people are walking and I can't.. Mind you I am maybe the only black woman there as I came solo. So I say okay, and she says come with me.. i go to her thinking maybe she saw what happened and will have empathy but I get no apology and she says she will get me a drink.. At this point I want to go home because i don't trust you and what you've done to my drink, so I want my ticket money back and to go home. I attempt to speak to the lady at the front and the owner and get no sympathy no kindness and just feel as if it was my fault for just wanting to patronize this place. This is the most recent racist experience I've had but this one hurt because i truly love the gays and the gworls but realize they along with the whites don't like black women. So never again will stand up for what does concern me. Never again will I patronize a drag bar and honestly anywhere in Montreal. I am sick of being mistreated everywhere. Again, black women I beg you to stay away from this establishment. You will regret pouting your hard earned dollars into racism. And as I was watching the bartender, they don't even put more than a tiny bit of liquor to your drink.. I watched this man pour essentially juice into 27 dollar drinks. Thankfully I got my money back and have drag race at home. The Asian men- hate us- White gay men- truly hate us and as we know white women loathe us.. The black security guy at the front wasn't helpful, we know why.. I just beg you, patronize places that love black women... This place does not. This was not my first time there and honestly I regret the first timet

It's like showing up at a line dancing club and being upset they are playing country music. look, if you're unfamiliar with this culture, if you have never experienced being in the same room with someone on drugs before, if you're not well aware that bylaws prevent the sale of alcohol after 3am, or consider that operating such a venue is going to be costly and some of those costs are going to be handed down to the consumer - then yes, obviously don't go. Save yourself the $50 and the typing you'll have to do on a 1 star review later. This is not a venue where a site like Yelp is going to be of much use to you. If you're going here because you're aware of the reputation of this place for audiophile-quality sound, and enjoy underground dance music culture then you're going to have a good time. If you're only showing up because you're a tourist who is looking at a list of clubs and you see this one has some attention, it's probably best to steer clear. this type of thing isn't for everybody. it's mainly going to be big room techno, a genre that offers limited thrills to many of the uninitiated. if you already know you like this music, you'll be good. Stereo absolutely does live up to the hype in terms of its famous sound system, and it's a thoughtfully laid out club, and a fun, safe (honestly the people who feel unsafe are people unused to after hours dance party culture/seeing otherwise harmless people on drugs etc.) place to dance. However, a place like this is never going to have the romantic DIY underground appeal of a TBA warehouse party, or some european clubs, and as such is a little soulless and pulls a wealthier downtown crowd who are a little soulless themselves. Definitely a feast for the ears but I struggle to imagine having your absolute best dance floor memories at a place like this.

A lot of the negative reviews clearly come from…read morepeople who didn't bother to read the simple rules that are posted in huge font in multiples places around the entrance and coat check. The rules are straightforward: 1. No alcohol 2. No gum 3. No photos or videos (... also the unofficial rule that the right side is the gay side and the left is the straight side by the end of the night. It's not an actual rule, but a cultural thing). Complaints about it being alcohol-free, having gum taken away, or being told to put phones away miss the point entirely. Those are exactly the kinds of behaviors the club is trying to filter out, and it's part of what makes the experience what it is. Don't go expecting a flashy or luxurious venue. There is no VIP area on purpose - everyone in the club is considered equal. The lighting is minimal, and the layout is simple... mostly a large seating area and a big dance floor. You're there for the sound system, which is arguably the best currently functioning club speaker system anywhere on the planet, and for the atmosphere, which is on another level. There's a reason it consistently ranks among the favorite venues of top DJs worldwide.
