I drove my rental car out of the airport in search of a place to find WIFI so I could WHATSAPP my daughter. I landed at Le Normandie only to be greeted by a handsome bartender who was my savior. He took my phone- hooked me up- hand wrote specific directions to my destination- while i contacted my daughter to let her know where I was. We found this one had the most relaxing vibe, especially in the early evening before activity on Sainte-Catherine began to percolate. This bar is mostly known for the access they provide patrons to thousands of music videos available through a mobile app. Somebody must've already programmed a lot of Depeche Mode and Erasure music, which was perfectly fine with Jamie since that's his jam. Meantime we sat out on the terrace and leisurely ordered a couple of rounds. First up was a pair of fruity lookalike C$11 drinks, Bellini à la Peche and Limoncello Spritz (Photo 9). The peachy concoction had prosecco and peach schnapps, jujube, and syrup. The spritz combined limoncello, prosecco, and soda. Our libations were so refreshing we went for a second round of same-price drinks, Berrylicious (strawberry slush & white rum) and Jungle Bird (dark rum, Campari & pineapple) (Photo 10). They were even buzzier than the first round. Our one nitpick with the slushie cocktails was that we were hoping they would be frozen, but we didn't whine about it. "Get your drink on"…read more In both of my visits to Montreal, I always make a point to stop here for a drink or 15. This multilevel bar/club has a little of something for everyone. The first floor is pretty chill and relaxed and the upper floor are more dance/twirk oriented. Try to get there a little early, make some friends on the first floor and go upstairs to dance the night away. Both the clients and staff are very friendly and helpful. Last year, I lost my wallet and someone turned it in but all of my money and credit cards where still present. :) The drinks are relatively cheap. But, it you are a "strong" drinker, I would suggest that you stick to martinis or drinks with no mixers. Canada does not do free pours for drinks so if you get a gin and tonic then it will be mostly tonic water. That is why I mention a drink of 15 above. If you bring a coat on a weekend, they will make you do coat check ($1.50 as of October 2015).

The bar is dark but not seedy, there's a low stage, big screen and second level mezzanine that looks down on the action below. The layout is great for visibility - lots of low tables around the stage, high tops in the back, plus the mezzanine. And the waiters are amazingly fast and efficient, they move through even a thick crowd smoothly delivering fresh drinks before you can blink. Fridays they show RuPaul's Drag Race to a cheering passionate crowd and the vibe is delicious, can't wait to go back!

I get there at 11.50 for the lady boom boom haha thing.. go in and am waiting for a bar tender- mind you, I was waiting a while and the White patrons came up.. automatically the bartender, skipped me and went to them.. so, as more people come up, I wave my hands hi- to get attention. I feel this Asian lady Jam into my left side and I'm like wtf.. and she's like we have seats here and I am like okay, I get that but I just wanted a drink.. her white male friend and Asian male friend proceed to start yelling at me telling I am yelling at them on some Karen ish.. they proceed to try to push into me.. Now I am telling back them to back eff up because... I hadn't even seen them and don't know who these demons are. I ask the bartender.. she starts yelling at me.. so now my social anxiety is on level 1000 because i just wanted a drink. I move to the front to get away and then get a tap on my shoulder from this white woman claiming to be the owner of the bar, and says that I am standing where people are walking and I can't.. Mind you I am maybe the only black woman there as I came solo. So I say okay, and she says come with me.. i go to her thinking maybe she saw what happened and will have empathy but I get no apology and she says she will get me a drink.. At this point I want to go home because i don't trust you and what you've done to my drink, so I want my ticket money back and to go home. I attempt to speak to the lady at the front and the owner and get no sympathy no kindness and just feel as if it was my fault for just wanting to patronize this place. The rules are straightforward: 1. No alcohol 2. No gum 3. No photos or videos (... also the unofficial rule that the right side is the gay side and the left is the straight side by the end of the night. It's not an actual rule, but a cultural thing). Complaints about it being alcohol-free, having gum taken away, or being told to put phones away miss the point entirely. Those are exactly the kinds of behaviors the club is trying to filter out, and it's part of what makes the experience what it is. Don't go expecting a flashy or luxurious venue. There is no VIP area on purpose - everyone in the club is considered equal. The lighting is minimal, and the layout is simple... mostly a large seating area and a big dance floor. You're there for the sound system, which is arguably the best currently functioning club speaker system anywhere on the planet, and for the atmosphere, which is on another level. There's a reason it consistently ranks among the favorite venues of top DJs worldwide.
