Easily one of the best clubs in North America. A lot of the negative reviews clearly come from people who didn't bother to read the simple rules that are posted in huge font in multiples places around the entrance and coat check. The rules are straightforward: 1. No alcohol 2. No gum 3. No photos or videos (... also the unofficial rule that the right side is the gay side and the left is the straight side by the end of the night. It's not an actual rule, but a cultural thing). Complaints about it being alcohol-free, having gum taken away, or being told to put phones away miss the point entirely. Those are exactly the kinds of behaviors the club is trying to filter out, and it's part of what makes the experience what it is. Don't go expecting a flashy or luxurious venue. There is no VIP area on purpose - everyone in the club is considered equal. The lighting is minimal, and the layout is simple... mostly a large seating area and a big dance floor. You're there for the sound system, which is arguably the best currently functioning club speaker system anywhere on the planet, and for the atmosphere, which is on another level. Love, love, love. This club is made for dancing! The sound system is best in class, and the dance floor has a little bit of "give" for all-night dancing. At the same time, there is ample space to sit and lean back if you want a break. No alcohol served but tons of drink options, including coffee and vitamin water. There are also handy vending machines. I found the bartenders to be quick and nice. Non-douche-y crowd, as well. Respectful and devoted crowd. Only bummer is the prison-like toilet seats, which have no seats. Not great if you're not in the mood to squat. I look forward to coming back! read more

Crazy night dancing until 5AM. First, my friends and I go around 10PM to the basement seems to have less people and mostly student. Surprisingly, bouncer is very nice and protecting our group until the basement section close around 2AM. Then we meet new friends that bring us to next building. This time we go up to upper level that has bigger room and variety of people and ages. Music is ok. Drinks at this dancing club are not that great and watery but as you expect we come here to dance so we don't really care. Reading some of the negative reviews of this place is honestly hilarious; a whole lot of people who clearly don't belong at a techno after hours and are entering not knowing why they're there. It's like showing up at a line dancing club and being upset they are playing country music. look, if you're unfamiliar with this culture, if you have never experienced being in the same room with someone on drugs before, if you're not well aware that bylaws prevent the sale of alcohol after 3am, or consider that operating such a venue is going to be costly and some of those costs are going to be handed down to the consumer - then yes, obviously don't go. Save yourself the $50 and the typing you'll have to do on a 1 star review later. This is not a venue where a site like Yelp is going to be of much use to you. If you're going here because you're aware of the reputation of this place for audiophile-quality sound, and enjoy underground dance music culture then you're going to have a good time. If you're only showing up because you're a tourist who is looking at a list of clubs and you see this one has some attention, it's probably best to steer clear. this type of thing isn't for everybody. it's mainly going to be big room techno, a genre that offers limited thrills to many of the uninitiated. if you already know you like this music, you'll be good. Stereo absolutely does live up to the hype in terms of its famous sound system, and it's a thoughtfully laid out club, and a fun, safe (honestly the people who feel unsafe are people unused to after hours dance party culture/seeing otherwise harmless people on drugs etc.) place to dance. However, a place like this is never going to have the romantic DIY underground appeal of a TBA warehouse party, or some european clubs, and as such is a little soulless and pulls a wealthier downtown crowd who are a little soulless themselves. Definitely a feast for the ears but I struggle to imagine having your absolute best dance floor memories at a place like this. read more

Stereo is an afterhours institution. It's huge. It's sound system could drown out a launching rocket. You'll move to it because you can't help it beats rattling you from the inside out. Looking around everyone is ecstatic. It's 5am and a thousand people push on the insides of this sound box. The sounds emanating from the booth are deep and soulful. When the bass drops you realize that the pilgrimage to hear co-owner/DJ David Morales' SIX HOUR SET was worth the drive, $25 entry fee and hours queuing in a wicked blizzard. Survival Kit: ear plugs (the system is tight, but deafening) pocket hand warmers (it's freakin' frigid in the winter) sneakers (you came here to dance, people) baby powder (for those sliding moves) waist belt (for cash/ID. you won't want to lug a purse) gum or tea tree oil toothpicks (someone on e will be thankful) an Emergen-C (a little pick-me-up) a hanky (for mopping up buckets of sweat) a thong (hey, you never know if you'll wake up at home) However the main room was torched last month and has yet to reopen. In the meantime the adjacent Stereobar is still pumping out beats. If you left when the bars closed in Boston there's a chance the party would still be going on. It's got a terrace lovely for the summertime, and while it lacks the shock absorbers under the dance floor like its big brother, the vibe is intimate and chill. To start off let me just say You can totally come here even if you're not hopped up on drugs. I personally don't use anything like molly or whatever else gets people all hyped up but I can tell you that I was able to dance and have a great time here without any drug use and partial drunkness (not a word but you get it). On the topic of drunk, they do not serve alcohol seeing as law won't allow them to anyways so just keep that in mind before going. Entrance fee is $30 and club opens at 2am Staff there are well organized and super friendly, major shoutout to them because that is so rare to find I also felt really safe, not sure why anyone would say otherwise...the security here literally reminded me of an airport or court security. They're friendly but safety is their top concern and it shows. Crowd: A lot of gay guys (obviously, it's in gay village) but straight/bi ladies don't worry, there's lots of straight guys there too. The reason for my trip to Montreal was not a disappointment. I'm a Techno Head. I love the layered beats, the evolution from song to song, and it's ability to make your brain tricked into transcendence. Back in DC we have a few good spaces for this experience, but nothing like Stereo. When I had to opportunity to visit Montreal, I knew this had to be on my list. I went for New Years Eve/Day, and was amazed at what I found. First, their coat check is so efficient and an amazing mechanical monster that whips your coat away in seconds. Second, their "stadium section" is complete with padded benches, chairs, and a detox bar to keep your energy up. Third, their sound system is so clean that even my phone couldn't pick up distortion. My partner noted when we got out that his ears weren't ringing, and they usually do after a club. As an 18 yr old female in a foreign country, I felt unsafe here. This was the only time during our trip to Montreal I felt uncomfortable. There are plenty of good clubs in Montreal, but this is not one of them. First off, we get to the night club around 11 PM. We walked down the stairs into complete darkness. No sign outside saying the name of the nightclub, but the address was right. The bouncer says it is free before 12. We're excited because we look this place up on trip advisor and it has very high ratings. We go in and pay for coat check. Then the security guy frisks me and my boyfriend. He stamps us on the arm with the phrase "URGENT!", a little weird but whatever. Finally we get in. We enter a room full of older people. Almost everyone I saw was at least 35 years old. The DJ was playing some terrible creepy techno music with no words at all. My boyfriend goes to the bar to get a drink and they tell him that he has to pay for a whole Redbull to get a Jager bomb. It's expensive so my friend declines and gets himself a beer and a (seriously overpriced) bottle of water. We normally tip at bars, but the guy so rudely told my friend about the prices that he did not think of it. The guy then proceeds to lean in and tell him that hey just so you know tip is not included so you need to tip. My bf reluctantly obliges. No one else said anything like this the whole time we were in Montreal. Bartender then gave us some made up story about how he makes no money bartending there. We leave to sit down and are surrounded by old bald men and 45 yr old women. Even tho I am clearly there with someone, men are creepily staring at me intensely the whole hour and a half we were there. This isn't out of the ordinary but I was not dressed up or anything and it was relentless. I did not feel safe. I had to use the bathroom so we go ask where it is. He directs us both in the same direction. We walk in to discover everything looks like an optical illusion. If you were heavily drunk you would probably get seriously hurt or lose your group of people you are with. The lights are so dim we can't see anything. The bathroom is unisex and there are men just pissing in the open and the bathroom stall had concrete floors and wooden walls. Really scary. I go out to find my boyfriend and get lost. Finally I find him after some creeps tried grabbing at me in the bathroom. We come out and I agree to stay and wait it out until at least 12:30. I try to take a pic of the nightclub on Snapchat and some dude comes over to me and yells at me saying "no pictures or video allowed." Finally when it started getting "busy", I realized that everyone on the dance floor was clearly on something. Everyone swaying creepily, and no one really actually dancing. We finally left around 12:45 and the coat check people wanted us to pay extra just in case we "came back." We said no thanks and left. If you're looking for a younger crowd, decent music, decent prices, and overall good vibes, this is not the place for you. read more

For all intents and purposes, my clubbing days are over. I just can't hang with the best of them any longer. I can't even remember the last time I stayed at a club past 1am, until I went back to the new Stereo. I for one, love the new place. Maybe it's old age, but I appreciate how clean the revamp is. I actually think the new DJ booth is great high above. Taking the DJ away from the center of attention nearly always makes for a better dance floor vibe (Twilo, Fabric etc.) and party. Love the adequate seating they provide, spacious dance floor and the vending machines for non alcoholic drinks. Hearing the godfather of house music, Frankie Knuckles lay down one of the most incredible sets I've heard in years, on the finely tuned Stereo sound system had me not wanting to leave. If it weren't for my flight out, I probably would have stayed longer as it just got better and better as the night/morning progressed. Just a note and I feel weird even having to mention this but the crowd is predominantly gay. If that makes you uncomfortable, just stay home. You are truly missing out on one of the best clubs in the world. Also as a true after hours, they don't open until 1am. This place is strictly for real house music lovers. Cover was pretty ridiculous ($40) but I got more than my moneys worth as this trek absolutely restored my faith for what real clubs still have to offer. read more

Best club I've been to in North America. Only places that rival it or surpass it in terms of music and vibe are in Europe, particularly Berlin. (I'm looking at you, Berghain - the pansexual goddess of techno clubs.) First off, the sound system. I was able to sit directly in front of the main floor speakers and still have a near-normal conversation with my friend. It's hard to describe, but the sound manages to be loud, body-shaking and intense without blowing out your ears or forcing you to shout. Next, the music. I hadn't heard of any of the DJ's, but the sounds they were making were sick. The first set even managed to blend Turkish music with deep house and it blew my mind. The DJs all knew how to play the crowd, bringing the energy level down then revving it up for unbelievable climaxes. Finally, the people - I really enjoyed the vibe the Saturday night I went. Everyone seemed friendly and really into the MUSIC, not strutting around and making a scene. Oh, and for those of you who think this is a place just for doing all sorts of drugs and rolling till 7am, well you're right haha. HOWEVER I wasn't high or drunk and still had a blast and stumbled out of there around 630am, happy and buzzing from the music. Stereo is THE Flagship nightclub with analog sound system second to none (aside from PACHA) this place is poured with much technology its just mind blowing for any DJ's dream to spin here. For example the floors are equipped with springs to make u stomp and jump longer then usual before your feet start to kill. the sound system its self is so beautifully hand crafted installed with so much care it makes you ears orgasm with so much clarity that when you leave the club your eardrums are not exhausted from loud music. like no other club I have can actually have a conversation with somebody beside me without yelling. For the light you could probably just youtube it and see for yourself, its all about the globe. This is a club is only for music lovers. the DJ's who come to push this overwhelming sound system mainly play tech house to deep tribal house. it is something you must experience at least once. read more

Before the fire and rebuild, this was one of my favourite places! The music, the energy, everything was perfect. Now, not quite my favourite place anymore. It's been revamped and made fancier. With the new lights and big screens for visuals it's a bit too bright for an afterhours, however on new years they turned them down and turned off one screen so it felt more like the old stereo. Other changes that I don't like are the new DJ booth (too high and I liked it on the other side of the room before) and sometimes the people. Before everyone was so nice, I always made friends with people in line for the bathroom, getting water, or taking a break. People seem more closed off, not letting people in as much, changes the energy a bit. I have been back more recently, I originally wrote this review in 2010, and have had some better experiences with the crowd, but it's still not the same as the original. They've gotten rid of the secret Saturday thing which is great! Now I can actually plan when it's worth it for me to spend the money and the time to go. All that to say, the club is still great. The new open space is great, the sound is still amazing, and the wood floor is great to dance on for hours. Just make sure you hide your gum really well! They take away gum at the door. I am reading the bad reviews, and I honestly can't believe my eyes, this place is heaven on earth, it cannot even be compared to any other place! Stereo's sign refers to "home", and you truly feel like you're home. You feel safe, loved, and extremely happy! People there are all nice, every time I go there I meet new amazing people! I really enjoy going to Stereo but you have to like that kind of music in order to have a good time.

One of my favorite raging afterhours. One of the last shrines to the old spirit of house music. There was always an electric energy in the place, and the sound was always pumping. The dancefloor is really where the sound and the energy shines: in the center of those four monolithic tower speakers is choice. The atmosphere was always something along the lines of "how much can you take"; and we all loved it. The place gets steamy and sweaty. Remember seeing people such as David Morales or Roger Sanchez play some awesome sets there. I always left fulfilled: sweaty and blinded on those times that I forgot to bring sunglasses. Luckily, I have always been in Montreal during the summer; so I haven't had my memories soured by waiting in the cold to get in. For me, usually visits for the Montreal Jazz Festival and nites at Stereo went hand-in-hand. Sure the water-bottle prices are just silly; but the nostaglic me loves that steamy atmosphere. Great if you like techno. Stay away if you want to bowl. Doors open at 2 am for after hours and at that point there seems like there would have been enough room to bowl but they kept filling the room with smoke so I feel like I wouldn't even be able to see my pins. Around 4 am the place became kind of packed and the lineup outside was huge so I feel like bowling then would have been impossible. So its Saturday night, having recovered from my long drive last night, I head out into the night with my wife. We wander down St. Laurent and the street is blocked off to auto traffic and feels like one giant club/lounge, the weather is amazing the whole city is mobbed by tourists and students from all over. We decide to go check out this club, after asking a few people in line about prices and music. The place is three floors, the music was pretty much house and some euro-pop I guess. Sound system is pretty good, being on third floor, which is pretty much just a balcony overlooking the second floor, I did'nt get to sample the sound system on that floor. The crowd was pretty much in a good mood, and I guess with the weather and the end of a great summer, why not? Left at my usual earlier hours, the line was still huge at 1:40 AM! Hope the place can hang on for a few years, seems like every time I come up here, things change completely. Oops, after looking at a message I got from some dude, I think this is the wrong club, the one I went to was on St. Laurent street... it was named Radio something or other maybe, it was a pretty cool club anyways. read more

Incredible, I'll give it two reviews based on what kinda person you are, Technohead and EDM lover/regular "Club" goer that's never been to a techno joint before: REGULAR PERSON: as per the bad reviews, you have to know what you're getting into. I've brought a friend that only liked EDM (which IMO, is god awful), and she hated it so beware it's definitely up to music taste. Some nights only pick up after 6am because people can go till about 4pm DEPENDING on the DJ, so you might walk in and there's literally only "Ambient music", which could legit just be nature sounds, and is sometimes a precursor to what's about to take place (ie Dixon, one of the best DJ's in the world). Other nights it could be just fast paced pile driver techno, or deep house, depends on the DJ. Bathrooms are dual purpose, and yeah you gotta squat although the crew does an immaculate job of keeping them clean + in their normal state (there'll never be toilet paper on the floor and chunder gets cleaned up immediately). I'd think of it more of a music festival than an actual clubbing night, meaning google what you need before you come in, there's NO ALCOHOL and to every single regular that's totally fine, you should know this, it's not a regular club so don't attend it like it is. If you want to drink, pregame hard. The securities very serious because they don't want people dying from taking GHB (the date rape drug, says so in some news articles), so they'll frisk you well and even look around your shoes + pat you down, more serious than a music festival imo. This place is also a haven for everyone that loves techno as it's one of the only joints to go to in mtl (ew circus), so it's going to be an incredibly open community and keep an open mind, you might see some shit like people just going at it on the dance floor (not sex tho, ain't no berlin, but very intense making out). If you're nervous about coming, try a taste of downstairs (stereobar) first, it opens earlier and serves alcohol + has a sick sound system (albeit not as great as stereo). TECHNOHEADS I've had the time of my life here on more than a few occasions, Hernan Cattaneo b2b Guy J, Rodhad, Dixon, Mistress Barbara being outliers (they're sick) (Again, if you don't know those artists, try Stereobar first). The clubbing rivals that Berlin + Amsterdam, better sound then in NYC (at least compared with basement/avant gardner). If you're used to seeing people at music festivals, you'll know that they're the nicest people ever - the same goes for here, absolutely filled with love. Friends will be met everywhere, people are free here, sound is stellar, and i've stumbled out of here anytime from 9am - 6pm the next day. You can refill your water bottles in the washrooms, and the place is set up for raving, the lights are insane and even walking around the place is trippy. Stereobar also has sick sound. legit fantastic. Most dark and intimate place there is, pure fun. The owner (Tommy Piscardeli) is also a sick DJ, comes out once in a while, and his after8 after Dixon played was pure class, surreal experience. Such an intense club. People even wake up early and go in the morning for some high paced cardio, that's how sick the club is, you don't even have to wreck your sleep schedule for it. Demerits of the place: gotta squat for the toilets (no toilet seats), in the winter the doors are left open at the door so waiting in line for coat check can be cold/at the start of the night, securities toughest i've seen. if they catch you with drugs you can go in without them or leave with them, take option 1. I couldn't even get a drink because the bartenders would ignore us since they were too busy taking shots for themselves ... And for the door man he was just unbelievably rude. I have been a long time patron of Stereo through its ups and downs and up until now had only glowing things to say. That being said, last night I had a very negative experience with the door staff which discolored my view of Stereo greatly and I wanted to share it in case any other possible patrons encounter the same problem. In short, the door staff were astoundingly flippant, glib and discourteous. I know that Stereo is not the Ritz - and I do not expect white glove service - but I certainly expect to be treated politely and efficiently. In particular, the gentleman handling the guest list was demonstrably unfamiliar with the most basic processes and habits of customer service and business. Without going into detail, his Kafkaesque performance culminated with him insulting me and my friend who was visiting from abroad. I do not normally take the time to write reviews, and certainly not of nightclubs, but the experience at Stereo last night ruined our evening and has dissuaded me from ever frequenting this establishment again. Inasmuch, I wanted to put this extreme lapse on record and forewarn others in case they should encounter the same unpleasantness from the staff. Montreal is a charming city with charming nightlife and, nonwithstanding Stereo's storied reputation, there are plenty of other places which will take your money and show you a good time without the grossly misplaced attitude I had to deal with. read more

Had a good time! Got there early so we were able to avoid the very long line that built up a couple of hours later. Nice club, there's always a place to sit or cool down. Bathroom is clean and bartenders are attentive. If you're looking for a fun place to dance some EDM, this is the place. read more

This is horrible. Bouncers and host are horrible. They are inconsiderate, rude and aggressive. Definitely not worth the time. Look for somewhere better. If I could rate it zero stars I would. read more
