(Made a reservation for a Friday night, they do walk-ins but there's a wait usually) The quality of the tapas here reminded me of tapas bars I ate at in Barcelona, so overall I was impressed with the food. Some highlights were: Wagyu Hanger Steak with Frites - the steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly - juicy, and it was served with a piquillo pepper sauce which added a tangy flavor Patatas Bravas - reminded me of some I've had in Spain, very good overall Chistorra - Spanish sausage from the Basque region - first time trying this and it had a nice, smoky, paprika flavor The cured tuna with almonds was interesting to try but I probably wouldn't order it again, the cured tuna tasted more like a salami to me than tuna. We also got the basque cheesecake and sea salt olive oil ice cream, and I preferred the ice cream as it was homemade and had a very rich sweet/salty flavor. Beautiful place, but the tapas? Meh. The torta - had green peppers in it, and was burnt on the outside. If I knew it had peppers I wouldn't have ordered. Pan con tomat, bread was very good but the tomatoes were very watery. The grilled cheese was good but it could have stayed on the plancha longer, the cheese wasn't really melted. The croquettes were sad little burnt balls. Menu said chicken but the were just balls of mush, take them off the menu or do them right please! And they were so pushing the home brewed iced tea, that they forgot it, and took it off the menu. It was lunchtime and not very busy. But they couldn't connect . Good tapas is the bases, so try a lot harder please. Beautiful spot, they need better food. read more

I stopped in here mid day on a Thursday and sat at the bar. The place wasn't busy but people were filtering in and out from the outdoor tables. I sat at the bar totally being ignored by 2 young white female bartenders while they took orders from people who walked in after me. My friend joined me about 5min later and we both sat there like we were invisible. My friend managed to get the attention of one of the bartenders who waved and went right back to serving other people who walked in after us. Being that we were the only Asians on the premises I can't help but feel like they were just ignoring us for this very fact. Incredibly rude. Who opens a bar in the heart of Chinatown and doesn't serve Asians. Absolutely despicable! Hope the people in Chinatown boycott this place. Bar Oliver is a great little spot for a date night. It's extremely intimate and cozy. They had an amazing Albariño and my husband loved the beer they had on tap. The food was so good, especially the crispy artichokes, melon and jamon, and wagyu hanger steak. This place is a gem! read more

Incredible hospitality. Came here for drinks and appetizers on a Friday night at 6:30pm. They were overbooked (Resy system issue) and had to seat our party of 4 at the bar vs. at a table. They were extremely apologetic and comp'ed our entire bill... 3-4 rounds of drinks & food (!!!). We were speechless. Beyond their generosity, we loved our drinks and food. The Ataman Vermut was a crowd pleaser... we crushed several rounds of this. The Patatas Bravas, which comes in a tomato sauce, was fire. We ordered a second plate after devouring the first. Very versatile for date nights, group dinners, just drinks, etc. Food menu is pretty focused but diverse enough to accommodate many palates. Service: Great - fast and attentive. Drinks: Great list. We loved the vermouths; bartenders were very helpful for recommendations. Couple of Spanish beers on draft (nice to have the smaller pour options). Food: Delicious. Ordered pan con tomate with jamon and patatas bravas. Both great but the patatas bravas is a must get. So addicting; perfectly crispy potatoes, unreal sauce. Final note: can't say enough about the hospitality - it is exceptional and this place seems very well run. Resy had caused issues with their reservation system and allowed tables to be overbooked during our planned four person seating. The GM reached out a few hours before and asked if we would be open to sitting in the bar area instead (which ultimately was perfect for us and very spacious). When we went to settle our bill, we learned our drinks and food were entirely comped - an unreal gesture from the team. Generally speaking, I don't love the spillover of the Dimes Square aesthetic and vibe into Chinatown. But Bar Oliver is an undeniably cool Basque-leaning wine bar that's one of the better places in the city right now to grab a drink and some pintxos. We tried the pan con tomate, the tortilla, and the piquillo peppers marinated in olive oil, all of which were very good. At 6:30 it was easy to get a bar seat, but by 7 the place was packed. read more

Literally worst service I've ever experienced. Barback just going to everyone he wanted that he thought was pretty grabbing their orders and then telling the bartender what to make. After 20 minutes bartender finally came to me- told me they were out of what I asked and then walked away.... After 20 minutes I ofc had a back up. Put the menu down, continued to make eye contact as they just seemed to serve who they want. Strongly recommend!!!! We went early in the evening and the vibe was very relaxed and welcoming. We ordered small plates mostly which is such a fun way to eat. Everything was more delicious than the last. Grilled mushrooms with egg yoke! Chicken croquettes! One of us ordered the steak frites which was apparently absolutely great with a wonderful mild spicey red sauce. The vermouth cocktails were also a treat and very yummy. I've been talking by this spot for months now as we live in the area and its a natural navigation point. Sat at the bar on a cool-but-sunny Tuesday afternoon, and had a draft beer. I looked at their menu, but they were not cheap for me - nothing really like a pinxto/tapas. They had dry-aged steaks and other items but for serious $$$ I thought. Service seemed spotty to me, and this is obviously my opinion. I had fine service, but I sat for maybe 35min by myself just enjoying the time. I noticed significant times where there would be people waiting, and the service-team would be talking/huddling together; eventually someone would come over and engage. I twice tried to order some cheese, and some olives. I was going to ask about a glass of red wine. But no one asked me anything after giving me the beer, and I also had to work at getting attention to get the tab. So all I had was a draft (of two drafts available, both Spanish lager types), and my pre-tip bill was $13.76. It was not a large draft, and I would go so far as to classify it as a medium/small size. I tipped as well and left. I wish this place were better value, had more reasonable food options, and service was less sporadic. read more

Really charming corner bar, but very small and shoulder-to-shoulder busy. Friendly staff. We sat at the bar and had the potato salad (my favorite), chicken and ham croquetta (3 mini per flavor), and the fries which were served with ketchup and mayo. To drink we both had peach Bellinis which were excellent. The only reason I deducted a star is because it is really small and tight (but I guess that's New York for ya), and loud with no acoustical fixtures. Great local gem to try out! read more
