Stopped into Bar Hygge on a Sunday, at 3:30. This is during the hour where they transition from the mid-day bites menu to the full dinner menu. I just wanted a couple beers and a Caesar salad, and then once 4 o'clock rolled around, a plate of their pretzel bites with beer and jalapeno cheese. I love the atmosphere of this place, and the staff, including hostess and waiter, were very friendly and attentive. I'd like to visit Bar Hygge again sometime, bring some other folks along, and get more serious about their dinner menu, because they seem to have a lot of good-looking items! Cute neighborhood bar with nice decor and better-than-expected bites. Came here around 4:30 on a Sunday after wandering the area, and even at that weird time they had other business. We shared a bunch of small plates and the seasonal pea gnocchi - everything was good, kind of surprisingly so (I feel like American bar food is usually meh), but the best things were the gnocchi and Manchurian cauliflower. Cozy spot on Fairmount Ave with a mostly relaxed atmosphere. They serve their own Brewery Techne drafts, tried their Tropicali sour and it was okay but a milder flavor. Menu has a wide variety of options that seem to rotate often, and they have brunch on the weekends as well. Tried the Hygge burger and it was quite tasty. Nicely grilled up with melted cheddar on a good brioche that held together well. Fries were thick cut and seasoned quite well. A local favorite - this place always has something new to try. We like the vibes and sitting outdoors on nice weather days. It's located right on Fairmont and it's easy walk for us. It's pretty easy to get reservations or to walk in, and we love the neighborhood vibes the place provides. On our last visit we chose things off their vegetarian menu - the ricotta toast, beet salad, some cheese curds, and their grain bowl! We honestly couldn't finish everything and packed up most of our entree for another time. Everything was well made and served in a timely fashion. We had great service and enjoyed our time. We have come here few times in the past few years, last time being yesterday just for an early dinner date. We like it but don't quite love it. The food is good enough but there's always something missing in it for us. The drinks are great, however. We like the interior, service is good. It's just not one of those really great food places for us. This last time we had oysters (they had NJ and Canada); then they quickly ran out of NJ ones, so for the second round we could only order one remaining kind (it was 7pm, maybe those were popular all day, who knows). We had deviled eggs, which were great! But then we had chicken mousse toast and it was okay. The mousse was great, but the bread was just a regular store-bought not very fresh bread. And that's what I mean...it's always something every time we come. We know what to expect I guess, so solid 4 stars for the place. read more

We loved everything about this place. Good beers and good food. I was surprised that the bar food was more elicited than most places and was pleasantly surprised how good everything was. Our table enjoyed the burger, chicken sandwich, oysters and cheese curds along with many different beers and VERY good espresso martinis. Service was great and vibes were good. A Friday evening at Bar Hygge couldn't have been more enjoyable. We chose to sit outdoors on a gorgeous late‑spring night, and the warm and breezy vibe was welcoming. The staff was great--friendly, attentive, and accommodating without being overbearing. Considerate timing of our order made for a wonderful flow to our meal. We split the Salmon Ceviche, which arrived with creamy guacamole and crisp house‑made tortilla chips. It was a crisp and flavorful start. The chips were so sturdy we asked for more--no collapsing under the toppings! For my entree I ordered the roasted oysters and the Manchurian Cauliflower which was bright and well‑seasoned--yum. The roasted oysters were fresh and flavorful, with a delicious mix of oil, salt, and poblano pepper. We paired everything with their in‑house Dragon Tears beer--a colorful, fruity brew concocted in accordance with Drexel's Food Sciences department and was nice complement to the meal. We couldn't leave without trying the Hygge Tasty Cake, which is inspired by the classic Tastykake Kandy Kake. Spoiler alert; This is a no for me. Bar Hygge is in Eastern State Penitentiary's neighborhood. It was very busy. I grabbed a seat at the bar from a couple that was leaving. They have approximately 8 taps. I got the Lemon Meringue. Mostly because I wanted to say Lemon Meringue. Getting a beer based on name because they don't have a beer on tap that you usually get. Then you like the beer you got. Is that bad because they don't have something you know you'll like or is it good because I tried something new and liked it?? The bartender recommended the crab fries. The crab topping was pretty tasty. The fries were a thicker cut, under cooked and soaked in oil. Sidebar - 2 days later I took my leftover crab fries. I scraped off the topping. Put fries in microwave for a minute. Then in Air Fryer for 5 minutes. Put the topping back on - Don't judge, I'm am stubborn and frugal - They were 1268% better. You ever go somewhere with decent expectations and then walk out like, "Okay, well now I have trust issues because how was it that good?" That was this place. The pictures I took don't even come close to doing the food justice--it's like watching a movie trailer and then realizing the actual movie is 10x better. Service? Great. They coursed out our meal like they were planning a wedding. Everything arrived with perfect timing, and I was genuinely impressed. Now let's talk about the fried pickle chips on the chicken bites. Whoever came up with that combo deserves a raise, a hug, and probably a key to the city. Absolute genius. So stupid good. I got the chicken sandwich, and it was incredible. The sauce? I don't even know what was in it, but if they bottled it, I'd invest. We also tried the Hygge Burger. I was a little skeptical when I saw "brisket," but it was like a delicious secret tucked inside the patty. One of the best burgers I've had--but to be fair, I was also a couple "Espress Yourself" martinis deep, so my taste buds were busy doing a happy dance and probably not thinking too critically. Food was pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed both types of oysters. The aperol spritz was wonderful. My partner said the ribs were delicious. The ricotta toast could have had more of a sauce, will it does come with hot honey, I felt it overall lacked in flavor. The crispy brussels were definitely worth the rave as far as taste, if you get them will one of the board options they probably make more sense. Service was good. I've eaten here several times before and never had an issue, but last night I had a pretty poor experience. I ordered the chicken bites. I took a bite into the first one and it was completely raw on the inside. The waiter took it back but I wasn't comped for my meal, which was disappointing. A few vegetarian options appreciated. I decided on the roasted beet salad, which was fantastic. They diced the beets up super small, and the dressing was not over bearing. Unfortunately, I would not come back for the food - only for drinks and apps. Very fun local bar/bistro! We came in a Saturday night and made a reservation even though every time slot was available. The gin and tonic was probably one of the best I have had! Very refreshing. We ended up getting one of the boards w/ the Mac n Cheese balls, fried artichoke, and the nimbus cheese. The fried artichoke was the highlight! The cheese was good but wanted more of it and the Mac n Cheese balls were delicious but wished they were a little warmer! We both got the burger for dinner! It was amazing! One of the best burgers and fries I have had in the city. And then we finished with the pretzel donut holes. This is my all time favorite spot in the neighborhood. Whenever I have someone from out of town, I always bring them here for the beer, the pickle pot, the truffle butter, and the fries. I am totally a chicken caesar salad and french fries girlie, and these fries are THICK. They come with a house made aioli, and it is absolutely STUNNING. The Chicken Bites are tender and flavorful. Big thumbs up on the Tempura Cheese Curds, too. But the one you must order is the Manchurian Cauliflower! Beyond satisfying - delicious! So so yummy and strong pour. Yes! The burger was just ok. I would opt for real fries next time. The 'home fries' were ok, crispy and flavorful but the fries on another table looked better. My wife got the sausage and biscuits. Keep in mind they serve the eggs in top (sunny side up). Our server was attentive and corrected it as wifey prefs the scrambled. The sausage and biscuits were ok. Nothing amazing... just the depth of flavor missing. However, it was ok. We were there for brunch and they may have a more expansive dinner menu. Bar Hygge feels like home away from home for us. We are regulars there for so many reasons! The staff are all absolutely wonderful and take such great care of us. The food is consistently incredible. Their brunch is amazing and their dinners are fantastic. The burger is something we often crave and it never disappoints. They switch up their menus and specials just enough so us regulars always have something new to try and our favorite items are always there when we crave them! The drinks are also some of the best in the city! From the house brewed beers to the creative cocktails to the tap wine. It's all great. Their espresso martini is what I compare all others too and usually Bar Hygge's example wins! This place is something special and has kept us coming back for over 5 years now as we live in the neighborhood.
