Please step it up sunset marquis, you're better than this. From banning smoking on the grandfathered in smoking patio to leaving only one person for the entire bar for several nights now, to have only one elderly security guy by himself, these are below standard decisions that even I can see having direct consequences on your patrons' well being. Sometimes a business needs to advertise their establishment is inside a hotel. Was not expecting the atmosphere when we pulled up for a night cap after dinner. Let's put this aside. There's no street parking and valet only. We were welcomed with lots of inebriated hotel guests shouting at each other. Another group sitting in hotel lobby drinking and cat calling each woman who walked by. We wanted to stay for drinks, but this establishment was more of local hotel guests wanting to get drunk and not drive. Kudos to them. But not for a person wanting a unique atmosphere with a date. I went to a reading at Book Soup Monday night, and afterward, several of us decided to grab a drink at a nearby bar. Turned out, though, that Monday was St. Patrick's Day and the bar next to the bookstore was already rowdy at 8:30. We were brainstorming other options when I remembered a post-Book Soup party I went to at the Sunset Marquis a couple years back. I called the hotel and inquired about the bar--specifically whether they could accommodate a bunch of middle-aged customers looking to avoid the St. Patrick's Day experience. The woman on the phone informed me that Bar 1200 had just opened and was still quite calm. My friends objected to being characterized as middle-aged, but they were happy when we got there and the place was dark and peaceful with a soundtrack straight from turn-of-the-century KROQ. We were able to walk in with nine people and take over a corner of the bar, with lounge seats and table space for our whole party. We stayed for over two hours and the bar filled up but never got loud or crowded. Service at the bar was polite and fast. The only negative is that there was no food, and when a couple of us scrounged some up elsewhere in the hotel, we were told we weren't really allowed to bring it into the bar. I got two cocktails, which were solid but also $23 apiece. The Holy Grail was light and refreshing, with green Chartreuse, agave, lemon juice, and the herbal blast of Fernet Branca. The Uncle Monty was smooth and strong, with Monkey Shoulder Scotch, Amaro Montenegro, orange bitters, Luxardo cherry, and an orange wedge. Both came on the rocks and went down very easy. I had a grand time at Bar 1200 and will definitely keep it in mind when I need a chill place to drink in West Hollywood. It's a fine spot for those of us who remember the 1990s. read more

Interesting little spot hidden inside the Sunset Marquis Hotel. I went mid-week, expecting to have a nice, quiet business chat with a couple of artist, but when the clock struck 10 (or was it 11pm?), the music cranked up, people suddenly came in for late eats, and there was cigarette smoke everywhere. To clarify, the smoke came from the attached patio, but it's designed in a way that it is probably LEGALLY a separate smoking area, but in practicality, is like sitting 2 tables away from a Marlboro testing facility. I used to smoke, so it didn't bug me much, but for those allergic or put off by the smell of it, sit far away from the patio entrance. The inside lounge is very small, which means that once 20 people have entered, it feels like a buzzing popular spot, and out comes the Insta story captures. You can eat pretty late here, as I believe food comes from the room service department of the hotel. Crowd on a midweek night is pretty mixed, young and old. I wouldn't call it a sexy crowd, but a "doing my own thang" kind of vibe. Good thing is you can walk around the premise a little bit and see all the cool stuff from the hotel's rock and roll history. This is a great Hollywood bar scene at Sunset Marquis, people are friendly, atmosphere is chill, the drinks are creative and tasty, many whiskey cocktails on the menu, I tried a champagne vodka drink, it was so refreshing and yummy! This hotel is luxurious, the staff are fabulous and helpful. Show you around your room, tell you about the 3.5 acre property which boost restaurants, bars and a spa . They have access to spectrum gym up the street for its guests, a pool, and even turn your bed down for you and draw tour curtains in the evening! I love this place. The breakfast was nothing special, poached eggs, potatoes, bacon and melon with toast. The coffee was not very good kind of bitter. But I still think this place is fantastic. I have been coming to this Bar recently in the last year, discovering it AFTER I moved out of the neighborhood its in. As much as I wish I had known of it before, I am still beyond happy to make the trip to Sunset Marquee in West Hollywood to go here. The reason especially, besides their piano nights and previous accommodations, is to see LA's BEST Bartender, Nihan! She has made her guests feel so welcome and clearly has a plethora of regulars that go to see her and enjoy any of the incredible drinks she makes. Her personal welcome and professional and courteous demeanor keep these regulars coming back, but also ensure a positive experience for anyone lucky enough to get a drink from her their first time here. Her memory is amazing and she literally remembers practically everyones drink of choice. I will continue to enjoy this space as long as Nihan is there. 5 star service! This place is classy and professional every step of the way. Went there for a big birthday party and was overwhelmed by the way everything fell into step from a staff that worked together like a Swiss watch. They made the party so special by putting in so much effort yet staying in the sidelines so the party goers can spread out and enjoy themselves. I have never seen such attentiveness like I did here. Felt kind of goth inside even though I don't think that's the feel they were going for. It's a rather small bar so if it's happy hour or maybe weekend you might not have any seating room. A dark, handsome oasis tucked nicely away just south of the obnoxious affectation of the Sunset Strip. My date insisted that the joint used to be much better when it was The Whiskey Bar but everyone knows LA is a whore and will sell out any thing considered immemorial in a heartbeat to the highest bidder. Ah yes, LA is not a place for one who likes to wax nostalgic. As far as our experience went however, let me preface this by saying that both of us were fairly shit-faced drunk by the time we got there. I felt like the bar gave off a vibe of swank without trying too hard which I liked and it was pretty low-key for a Friday night. I especially liked that though we only ordered one round and nursed them for what seemed like a ridiculous period of time we weren't once hassled by our bartenders trying to clear our glasses or to get us to order more. There was a celeb bday party the night I stayed so we got to party with them., do not know his name but he was super cool. Bar has a rock n roll feel to it, true Hollywood feeling. I want to start off by saying we valeted our car for a ridiculous price of $30.00 to go to this little bar/lounge. The Peninsula doesn't even charge that much to drink at their bar. If you have never been to the Peninsula the service is BAR NONE from the moment you step out of the car (which cannot be said at Bar 1200). This place is TINY and the service leaves much to be desired. Drinks are not bad, but not throughly impressive either. The beer menu is horrible. For a place that is trying to impress, I think Heineken was the most impressive beer next to Budweiser. LOL Apparently you can't use your phone or take pictures. Although I must say I was texting the entire time so I don't know if these are just rumors or not. Again, the service was lackluster so it would be hard for someone to catch you taking pictures or using your phone as they claim to be paparazzi proof. We were having a terrible time trying to find a place to grab a drink on a Saturday night (ughhhh, LA, you smite us), but someone thought of the Sunset Marquis and we were pleasantly surprised to see Bar 1200 fairly empty, with lots of places to lounge. We tried sitting out on the patio, but even though it's 99% enclosed, it's still open enough to allow smokers, so we quickly moved inside. I ordered a glass of wine but they were out of wine glasses. That was strange, but I took it in a regular glass. The crowd seemed a little older, but as another birthday passes me, I should probably not complain about that anymore. They started aggressively moving us out at 1:40AM, and while I'm sure they have their reasons, it felt lame. Overall, it did the trick, but I probably wouldn't seek it out again unless we ran out of options. read more

It was chill and not busy on a Saturday night, and I only came here on the suggestion of the doorman at Palihouse that wouldn't let me in because they were having a "private party"... which is doorman speak for "we don't want single dudes in here." So I walked a couple blocks to Bar 1200 and got right in with no problem. The candle light and burning incense makes everyone here seem more well-meaning. Take in the lounge with autographed photographs of recording artists that have recorded in the basement recording studios of the hotel. I saw McLovin from Superbad shooting lemondrops.on the outdoor patio that is completely secluded from the street... I wonder if he's using that fake ID? The music is good and loud enough to enjoy but soft enough to hear the person next to you. A Jack & Coke is $10 and a Stella is $6. The crowd was a mix of hotel guests and locals from the neighborhood- the waitstaff knew half the people coming into the bar. Overall, a great place for a chill low-key night. read more

The coolest, most laid-back whiskey bar in LA. It's usually not too crowded and frequented by pretty interesting people. The bar area itself is dimly lit and has about 6-7 seats around it. You can bring drinks as it's connected to the indoor section. You have to walk down a steep hill if you're going from Sunset. You can park on Sunset or Fountain (street below the Marquis). This bar WAS great back when it was the Whiskey Bar. Not sure what exactly happened here but the crowds seem to be gone since they changed over to the 1200 name. One night a few years ago I was sitting next to the Strokes, Courtney Love and the Cure. Not kidding. But those days are long gone it seems. Now you are more likely to sit next to some ad executive from a hot NYC agency. Still, the place is pretty cool and not a bad escape from more crowded spots in the area. My favorite thing about this spot, besides the fact that it's tucked away from the strip, is that you have the option of sitting in the bar, which was quite lively, or else in the nearby hotel lobby, which is quiet and perfect for people-watching. The mixologist is so-so--let just say if you want to get drunk fast, order a vodka & pineapple (mine was so strong it was like gulping nail polish remover). But let's get down to the nitty gritty: I really can't blame Marquis, it really is a lovely place, and yes, I REALLY REALLY shouldn't let an uncontrollable coincidence taint my opinion.....BUT, I DO....... There I was, sipping on my pineapple & nail polish remover in perfect peace when who should show up? PRINCE CHARMING. (If you care to know, read my review of El Compadre...) Ok, I'll admit he looked cute as ever in his little leather jacket, but due to the fact that I never returned his phone calls, he was NOT a welcome sight. I tried to hide behind my hair hoping that I hadn't been spotted. And what did he do? He sat down next to me. In about five seconds I quickly remembered why I never called him back: "...what I'd really like to do is throw you over my shoulder and get out of here."....Yes, that was the second thing is he said to me. Right after "Hello." Come to think of it, I'm impressed that he even said "hello" at all. Oh, Prince Charming, for all that your name suggests, you really aren't very...charming. In fact, you're pretty much down right disgusting. I swear, I wish I could paint a target on the back of his head to warn fellow females.... I ended up downing my drink and forcing my friends to high tail it out of there. The only problem is, it was only 11:30, and no one wanted to go home. So where did we go....Villa. Gosh darn it. So pretty much, the night went to shit. So, Marquis. I don't think I shall ever see thy beauty again. For all your wonders: beautiful setting, private smoking porch, large drink menu, and even the non-douchey clientele-- none of these things are worth the risk of a PPCS (Possible Prince Charming Sighting). My beautiful and sweet friend worked at this place and they made her wear a skin tight catsuit and heels. Weird and a little silly, but she suffered through it because she got a ridiculous amount of tip money working there. The scene is very la la land, and you may actually bump into a big celebrity sucking down a pretty colored drink here.
