I didn't have very high expectations when I first went, but Boba Bear is a surprisingly good boba place. They don't have much competition after all - it's one of only two places Downriver. What sets them apart from most other shops in the Midwest (and what's more characteristic of one on the West Coast) is that they soak their boba in honey after cooking. This leads to a burst of sweetness and a more pleasant qq chew vs. the more widely available soak in sugar syrup or brown sugar. Admittedly, they do under cook the boba a bit for my tastes, but I can't complain too much given how much of a rarity it is in the area. Signature Milk Tea, Large, 50% Sweet, with Boba - Boba Bear doesn't really specialize in tea but I was able to taste the slight astringency of the black tea in this drink. This is more than what I can say about a lot of boba shops in Metro Detroit. 50% sweet was just right for me. They do put a lot of ice in the drink and I don't recall if they give you the option to adjust the ice level. The one problem I had was that the ice they use is the type that has the hole in the middle and the holes are just large enough that the boba can get stuck inside! I still think it's a good drink overall. Just a warning - they are about a dollar more expensive than other places. I think total after tax was around $7.40.

After moving to Michigan, one of the places I missed back in Virginia was my Boba tea place. The first boba tea I had close to my new home in MI was horrible. I happened to find this business while looking at google maps on my way somewhere else and my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. It's hidden from the road but I'd say the boba here is better than what I was missing in my old state!! Inside is cute, there's a couple places setup if you wanna take selfies which I wouldn't take advantage of but it's there. We've been here twice now and I get the standard house milk tea. It's absolutely delicious and I love that the tapioca is a little sweeter than what I'm used to. I hope they stay in business cause I'll be visiting here every chance I can lol

I don't want to hold it against them if the price of keeping fresh ingredients is sometimes running out of chopped green onions every so often. I tend to go during odd hours to eat so I'm usually not in a lunch or a dinner mix. For this reason, the place isn't crazy busy, leading to nice undivided attention. I do see it possibly becoming an issue if it was to get super busy. Each bowl is made-to-order, which means every customer gets full attention from ordering to check out. Maybe it's because the business hasn't picked up enough to warrant having a full assembly line like your Subways and Chipotles of the world. We'll have to see. As I was saying, ingredients are fresh, which is half of the battle for poke bowls. Sauce and side choices are very good, and best of all, your dollar goes a long way. I can easily fill myself up with relatively healthy bowl of poke for around ten bucks, and you get free miso soup!! Considering any fast food meals will cost a good fifteen bucks these days, I'm happy I can opt for a healthy choice for less.
