I am very excited to have Banter open in the Van Aken Market Hall, and I so very much want to love this place! Poutine and sliders!! What's not to love? I have been twice, and have been disappointed both times. While the sliders were quite good, both times the cheese curds in the poutine have been cold. This is a serious problem, and I believe it is an existential problem that must be fixed for Banter to survive. That said, the service has been very good, the dining space is open and spacious, and I look forward to the county finally approving the liquor license so we can enjoy a beer with lunch. Hopefully Banter can solve the cheese curd issue and will have a long and prosperous run at VAMH!! read more

I've been here multiple times since the Market Hall opened. Sometimes it gets VERY busy, so you might want to find it on off-hours first. If you're interested in trying poutine, this is where you want to go. Basically it's gravy & cheese fries. Plenty of varieties and flavors and ingredients to choose from (including vegan-friendly options). THE FOOD: Incredible. This almost instantly became "our place" when it opened. My personal favorite is the Forest City, a wild-mushroom poutine with a black-truffle puree drizzled on top. Their Polish Boy is out of this world. Just... wow. I've probably had half the menu, I wouldn't say anything is bad. Their crazy-concoction corn dogs are a little soft-textured, but that's just preference on my part. My wife just can't get enough of their normal Poutine, which is also out of this world. I wish they had more drink selection, but in Market Hall you have no shortage of choices anyways. THE PRICE: Considering the portions, very reasonable! A small (pretty filling for a single-person serving) will run you between $5-$8. I spend more than this having hot grease flung at me from a drive-thru window, so I'm pretty happy about the prices here. THE SERVICE: Always with a smile, always upfront about any complications or questions or whatever. I've sometimes had to wait for upwards of 30 minutes for my food, but that's what happens when you have 16 orders ahead of yours. OVERALL: 9.5/10. The only thing I want to see is more bev selection. And they're working on it, according to conversations I had with the people there. So watch this space for the perfect 10. read more

I came here with some friends and we were all treated very rudely by a staff member when we ordered. We tipped despite this and was still treated rudely thereafter by the same employee when we picked up our order. Thankfully it's one of those order-and-go places so there wasn't too much interaction. We've been there twice and both times had amazing food and fast service. Get the buffalo wing poutine and thank me later! As long as you know how to properly order food and interact with members of the service industry (unlike Sara L.) expect some great food. I recommend heading over to Craft Collective and getting a beer to wash down the poutine. I love this place! read more

Awful! OK, that's a little harsh, because the poutine wasn't all that bad. Not close to real poutine, but at least edible. The mayonaised salad was minuscule and also just barely edible. But, it was the $10.00 corkage fee to undue the twisty tie on a bottle of sparkling wine that completely killed the experience. The snippy and rude young " Karen , in training", who took our order, was of the privileged sort who has been coddled and facilitated all of her life and knows nothing other than her privilege. She did not bother to explain anything to us; instead she wagged her finger and threatened to call security on us when we I undid the twisty tie all by ourselves. The food is basically cheap grease on grease topped with more cheap grease. Heartburn will surely keep you up all night. If you want great, healthy food, go to Brassica. Their food is divine. Won't go back again. The sign in the wine shelves said there was a discount for takeout. We selected a bottle of Cava priced significantly higher than the grocery. The rude woman behind the counter told us that was the price for takeout. No discount. But if we wanted to drink it on the premises, there would be a "corkage fee" of $10! A huge anti-discount! As it was a no-tool easy-to-open Champaign-type bottle, I knew I didn't need it "corked", we decided on "take-out", and paid. We took our food & drink outside to the open-air tables. Two minutes later we were accosted by the Banter woman threatening to call security for our undoing the cork ourselves. We invited her to do so. No security person ever showed up, but her behavior ruined our meal. Seriously, don't bother going there. The food isn't that special, especially when the staff is so rude. read more

The food here is fantastic, if you can muster the courage to order. Every negative review here is probably about Scott. I don't know his last name, but I'm sure other Banter employees and management will know who I'm talking about. I've interacted with this cashier a half a dozen times now and every single time this man has been an absolute wretch. Not only does he make a point to avoid eye contact or smiling, but he is unfriendly and downright rude. He will ignore you as often as he can get away with. If you try to lighten the mood and ask him how it's going, he'll grumble about wanting to go home. One time he was counting his drawer around 9:15 pm, closing early, and he was happy to tell me he wouldn't serve me. Today, another customer was leaving the line as I was walking up. I saw it was Scott and ordered as quickly as possible to get away from him. While I was sitting and waiting for my food, the customer who was in line before me felt comfortable commenting to me (a stranger) that the cashier was incredibly unfriendly and unprofessional, and wondered if I'd had the same experience. "Every time," I told them. "Maybe he's having a bad day," they said. No, Scott is having a bad life. This guy has to be the owner, because no savvy business person would hire such a miserable soul to be the face of their business, and Scott is here most of the week. None of the workers in the other market shops like him. Even his colleagues candidly referred to him as "an a**hole" when he was in the bathroom today. On the other hand, if he was the owner, they'd probably be out of business. read more

So we've been going to Banter since they were brand new on the west side, and were super happy to find them opening up in Shaker. We came in tonight, on a Friday - it was super slow, and I ordered cheese curds and a black bean slider. It all came out cold, but the slider was burnt to a crisp, so we requested a new one. They brought it out to us, and nothing had changed - it tasted like the burnt stuff on a grill when it isn't scraped properly. Given that the sliders are a new menu item, we went to inform staff that however they had made it might not be the most appropriate cooking style - not looking for a refund, just trying to give feedback - and the man we spoke to informed us that since "you know, it's a Friday night and we're feeding half the city of Shaker heights" that poor quality should be expected. Given that Banter had roughly 40 customers in the hour that we were there, don't expect too much!!!! Definitely won't be back! read more

The Banter poutine is easily my go to, the cheese curds can be a bit cold, but the amazing gravy will melt everything together after a couple of minutes. The guy working the register is really nice and highly recommend in Van Aken. read more

The Brussel sprouts were good but our two sausage dishes were just so-so. The black bean sausage were the consistency of mush. The Polish Boy was lacking in taste and substance. Overall we felt it is a bit overpriced for the quality and quantity. read more

Frequented daily for two weeks. From the start customer service had room for improvement. The last time I went in I ordered a black bean brat and when it was served I asked the man behind the counter for a side of sauce, he replied it was already on the brat. Although it was on the brat I asked again for a side of the sauce. His reply was to mumble profanities and shake his head. I felt intimidated and disrespected. I looked in my email and I had a receipt from banter and it gave me the opportunity to leave feedback. I explained what happens and I was quickly met with an offensive email accusing me of being racist and asking me to never return to their business again. Banter, I will not return. read more

It's the fries. They are the best around. The poutine is fantastic. The sliders, which are a newer addition are really, really good. My kids are hooked on this place. We all are. We are glad to have the east side location so close to home. And now off to the gym. read more

We never received our food. After 35 mins of waiting for our food, we went to inquire. The cashier went to the grill to check and said they were currently making it, but gave us a refund. So we waited another 15 mins and the food never came. We went and ask again and the cook said he never even got the order ticket. What makes me so angry is that she led us to believe they were making the order and encouraged us to wait for it. A whole hour wasted and we still left without food. Such a disappointment. read more

This is probably the worst service I've received during my short visit in Cleveland. Unfortunately, we weren't able to enjoy our meal because of the rude cashier. My grandfather asked him about an item on the menu and the cashier was unable to speak intelligently about the meal. As a small business owner, I believe it is paramount that frontline staff be familiar with ALL ITEMS for sale. Thusly, we asked him if we aren't pleased, can we return item for something else but he condescendingly retorted that "no restaurants take food back, and it will be on the expense of us (the consumer) for making a bad choice". His response was inappropriate due to his lack of knowledge of the menu and as a consumer it is his job to ensure we are satisfied with service and the meal. Customer service is important for the survival of all businesses for referrals and return clientele. As a result, I would not recommend Banter Bottle Sausage and Poutine to anyone and if i could I would leave Zero stars. read more
