Now we all know that South Wharf is a hard place to get to however for BangPop I would carry out the mission. At the old "sharing house' site you have a Thai restaurant as we were told by the lovely Hamish that they are priding themselves on having authentic Thai street t food this side of the ocean. (made a little bit fancier) The venue is bright and clean with very happy and passionate staff that want to help you enjoy your experience. There is communal tables, outside tables OR you can sit at the bar. We started by ordering a few things; chicken ribs that came with a green chili, ginger sauce that was to die for; Pad Thai which was tasty a good amount of spice but if you want it hot you can always add more. (Hamish can educate you in how to cool it down too) The Chicken Ribs were so good that we had to get more. To wash this down we had Young Coconut Juice - great way to help with chili burn too Yelpers. I was so full that I didn't even want to look at dessert - however my dining companion wanted the deep fried 'sugar banana' (Klauy Tod) when he was almost finished I saw on the menu that they had Tapioca Pudding... OMG I had to get it I had not had Tapioca since I was in Asia so I ordered it. - Saka Song Kreuang was its real name on the menu, Tapioca & Pandan pudding with mango sorbet. Let just say they had to roll me out the door. I look forward to heading back with a large Posse to enjoy some tasty food.

Having a conference at The Convention Centre has a few perks, one of them would have to be having lunch at BangPop! I had only recently dined at The Sharing Plate (?) which was there before Miss Bang arrived so when I walked in and saw the same "Lego" bar was still there, i was all warm and tingly inside. I was flying solo so I sat on the bar trying not to be a loser. The bar seats are SUPER comfy, not the usual awkward and uncomfortable ones i've sat on before. I read many reviews and got recommended to try a few things but I was solo and couldn't order many small plates so I decided to opt for the 'Lunch Special' menu. $15 for a meal and a drink (Beer, Wine or Soft Drink) I ordered the Beef Red Curry and here are my thoughts... - Spicy curry (Definitely need H20) - Very flavoursome (Indeed - I wanted more) - Beans were crunchy (Always better than soggy beans) - Small portion (Great for lunch!) - Rice was fluffy (Hate gluggy rice) - Food came out quick (Perfect on a lunch break) - There was actually red chilli pieces in my dish (Good for people who like spice, pretty bad for those that don't) - Fried shallots were sprinkled on top of my dish (Normally not a fan but this really complimented it, as it would to most asian dishes) The bar was great, but if i had friends and it was a nice sunny day, I would've opted to sit outside.

Bangpop located on south wharf has a relaxed hip vibe. Enter a cool, hip venue with a long bar, bar stool type of seating, long shared table seating or personal small tables. Good for large groups. The menu is in English with Thai names for each dish. most staff are Thai too. So i walked in expecting authentic Thai. Entree menu does not include the usual entrees like spring rolls, money bags or curry puffs. The stir fry dishes were missing vital favourites like pad kee mao. Cashew nut chicken, tom yum khai etc. So don't go in expecting the generic dishes. Dishes are tagged with levels of spicy. We got the pad Thai (ask to remove the shrimp paste if you want vegetarian), the jungle curry with fish balls, the pad see ew and steamed rice. Coconut juice comes out of a bottle. Negative. I want young fresh coconut juice. They have limited vegetarian options. They will not alter their menu for you so you can't get red curry with chicken because it has to be with duck which probably means that dishes are perhaps pre-made. Dishes arrived at room temperature and quite quickly. The jungle curry has really weird tasting strangely textured fish balls. Didn't like it. It is quite spicy. Steam coming out of ears spicy. The pad see ew was quite bland. There was some chopped chilli on the side. Didn't contain any vegetables except spinach. Usually you get broccoli, capsicum, carrot, spinach and chicken. Portion sizes are good. Quite pricey. All mains are around 25-28 bucks each. We also got the cha (tea) cheese cake with coconut ice cream and lashes of shredded coconut and the pannacotta. The pannacotta was insanely sour. The cheesecake didn't taste like tea. It was average. The coconut ice cream/sorbet was yum! Service is efficient. Definitely a place for big groups and perhaps a date. Lots of cocktails and spirits on the menu. No split bills. They are quite adamant about it.

Yummmmmm ... the spices and cooking style is amazing and the serving sizes are good value. Staff are friendly and happy to talk you through any aspect of the menu. I recommend making a reservation as this place gets packed most nights of the week... a good sign of a good delicious food experience!

We love Bangpop on summer evenings! I love the beautiful pops of colour, but unlike all the brunch food porn it's all real natural colours and flavours. It's a bit more than we normally spend but there's cheap Tuesdays! $10 pad thai. During our last visit to South Wharf a couple months ago we came upon the Tuesday Special: $10 Pad Thai (save $6). That mightn't sound like a special in the city, but it sure is out here on the Wharf. Sure you're paying for location but the food here is amazing too. Pad Thai $10* + Chicken $6* or Prawn $8 - Thai stir fried noodles w/tofu, garlic chives, shrimp, beans sprouts, crisp shallots, fresh chilli & peanuts . The $10 special* to which I added chicken and he added king prawns (5). With the chicken there was quite a lot and big pieces too, $6 worth? I'd say so. :P The dish itself was huge! And so to me with the tofu already you don't really need the addition chicken, though jas loved the addition of prawns, high in quality but not quantity. Don't forget to mix it up, as there's all the toppings (crisp shallots, fresh chilli & peanuts) on the side. An explosive fusion on the palette of flavours and saucy tom-yum-ish like noodles, it was delicious and very satisfying! Highly recommended it's probably the cheapest meal in this lovely area by the wharf! Service was very good just like last time as we had the same waiter. :) Check out our last visit here: http://curiousxcharlie.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/bangpop-thai-on-south-wharf.html

Very tasty Thai food right in the heart of Melbourne, next door to the Melbourne Convention Center. All the curry dishes are delicious although extremely spicy. Make sure u ask for a glass of coconut water to soothe your burnt palette. The papaya salad is delicious and mouth watering ... Although very spicy. Service was excellent and I'd certainly come here again.

Pad sae ew

My partner and i had the Pad Sae Ew and the Wagyu Beef Cheek Curry with sticky rice. These dishes tasted fabulous and i was enjoying every bite. Service was mediocre. We were there for about an hour and within the first 20 minutes we emptied our glasses of pinot. No one offered us a top up, not even when they actually handed us our food. A shame because thats lost revenue cos we would have certainly had another glass! Prices here are pretty damn dear, expect good flavours but you could easily get something on par or even less elsewhere, i guess you're paying for the view? That being said, the location is great especially if you you're on your way in or out of the melbourne convention centre - much convenience, much price.

Very very tasty food. There waste very nice staff and quite prompt with getting the food to the tables. My favourite was the beef short ribs salad. Very flavourful and so tender. The chicken broth that came with the poached chicken was quite bland, maybe add salt or a spice. The betel leaf small dish is so unique and very original. Never seen it tasted anything like that. The fried squid was also very tender and flavourful. It was a very nice restaurant and would definitely go back again!

Penang curry: special of the day.

Had a nice dinner here tonight. Restaurant was quite empty but there was a steady stream of take…read morealway customers. A small place well decorated with Thai art works and artifacts. All their serving dishes (plates, vases, tea pots, etc) have their logo stamped on them. Oh snd the pots were elephants. I ordered the chargrilled beef. Wasn't sure what to expect since the description said grilled to perfection. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it grilled just right for me (medium to medium well), the portion was large and tasty. I thought it would taste salty with the soy sauce marinade and over cooked but not a bit. The texture was good as well. The beef was served with vegetables on the side and a sweet tangy sauce. The latter could be the salad dressing or a sauce to dip the beef in. Either way, only the vegetables were questionable with regards to their freshness. I saw others order a curry dish that was served over a candle light to keep the dish warm. Nice touch. Rice is extra and it was either jasmine rice or coconut rice. Waitress said coconut rice was too oily for her so I picked the jasmine rice. Served in a traditional dish, the rice was very nicely done. Service is OK. The cashier (might be the boss) was constantly talking to the two waitresses In Thai. I need ask for plain water, they don't offer either. Very polite staff, then again, I find Australians very friendly all round. Now go have some authentic Thai food.

What I always order: beef massaman, green curry chicken, roti bread and coconut rice. I also love the coconut juice as they serve it with a big spoon and big chunks of coconut, so refreshing.
