Came by for takeout since it was the nearest Thai restaurant to my hotel. Got pad Thai and crab Rangoon. The pad Thai was a little light on flavor. Not as much fish sauce flavor as I was wanting. Earlier I placed a carryout order & for starters the girl was short & rude. Me not knowing they changed their menu I ordered the same dish I have ordered for years The dish that was given to me was nothing like I ordered! When I called up there once we got home the girl said there was nothing she could do that I could place another order but I would have to pay for it Not to mention...there were only three shrimp in the order. I don't get to this side of town very often but heavy airport traffic and hunger brought me back to Bangkok 96. I last ate here several years ago, pre-COVID. Past meals were exceptional with great service and a vibrant dining room... Fast forward post-COVID. Those past memories and cool vibes are gone. Don't know what happened but it's a different restaurant. The former vibrant dining room is now a chopped-up self-seating area with cafeteria style service. There is no wait staff. Order at the front register. Get your own styrofoam plates, plastic-ware, and napkins. Seat yourself. Eat in or carry-out. Think Thai McDonalds. Not impressed with the food. It's pedestrian Thai. The Pad Thai noodles had a watery sauce with oddly shaped chicken pieces. Fried rice was $14.25 for a smaller portion. The rice was clumpy. Asked for medium spice, it tasted like no-spice. Some of the veggies looked and tasted pre-frozen. Two stars for retaining some Thai flavor within the watery sauces. Wow. Bummer. This place used to be great. Now it's mediocre. Sad to see it go. A truly excellent Thai restaurant with authentic Thai fare like pud/pad thai and larb; also excellent beverages like Thai iced tea (that they make there fresh on the spot). Excellent and prompt service, you order at a counter but they bring out the food to you. Also very expansive/spacious dining area with many seats/chairs and tables. Outstanding Wowed a must try . Spicy Crab Wontons 5 pcs Chili paste cream cheese with crab meat wrapped in wonton skins. Served with sweet & sour sauce. Perfect heat for those who love spicy . Chicken Satay 5 pcs Chicken skewer mixed with a coconut milk curry batter deep fried. Served with peanut sauce and a cucumber sauce. These hit different then any other place OMG so addictive with the Peanut Butter Sauce for dipping . Food was ok. I haven't visited Bangkok 96 in years and was in the area. Decided to dine in. Ordered the Panang curry chicken. The flavor was good but only had around 10 pieces of chicken and an excessive amount of green pepper slices. I wasn't expecting that dining in, I'd order like a fast food restaurant and then have my food brought out in carryout containers. Then directed to a station to grab plastic silverware and plates. Eating noodles or rice with plastic silverware is merely impossible, so I packed up my food and headed home. Very disappointed. Bangkok 96 was the staple Thai restaurant in metro Detroit. This used to be my go to Thai restaurant since I was a little kid. I'm sick and every time I'm sick I get the hot and sour soup. I was very disappointed with how salty it was. I like my food very salty but I couldn't even eat it I ended up throwing it away. This really saddens me. read more

Bangkok 96 has changed their business mode a bit since the pandemic. They were takeout only for a while, but now it's operating more as a counter service restaurant to accommodate those who want to dine in as well as their many takeout customers. I was pleased to find that they still offer a fabulous birthday discount. If you show your ID on your birthday, you can get one entree free with purchase of another entree. We tried the pud Thai and the fried rice. Both were delicious and plentiful. I also ordered a side of peanut sauce and received a generous portion. While this is not the best Thai in the area flavorwise in my opinion, it is very reliable. read more

I cooked some homemade pad thai and wanted to compare against one of the local Thai restaurants. Chicken Gang Garee - I ordered the medium and it was spicier than I anticipated. Still great though, a good balance of sweet, savory and spicy. Would get again for sure. Chicken Pud Thai - It's overly sweet, bordering on too sweet. The sourness doesn't seem to come from Tamarind - there was no fruity complexity so they probably use a vinegar base. I ordered the mild but there was no kick at all, definitely need to get a medium for an appropriate spice level. I couldn't taste much if any fish sauce. Most likely it's there, just muted against how sweet the dish was. This isn't the best pad thai around. Bangkok 96 isn't the best Thai food I've had, but it's still quite good. I tried something new & it was awful. The veggies were raw, except for the mushrooms & the cabbage. The cabbage was soggy, the onions, carrots, peppers & broccoli were raw. Not tender or somewhat cooked but raw except for one carrot that was slightly cooked. The beef was not seasoned, tasted a bit old too & was a bit chewy. Sauce was greasy & the white rice was either over cooked & clumpy or crunchy. When I called them about it they told me to bring it back, it is late & didn't want to & then told me that I needed to specify that I wanted the veggie cooked. They are 'flash fried'. It's a stir fry dish, #10 Pad PaK. Very disappointing & when I was trying to explain the veggies & she told me I should have specified I did say, well, the veggies are f ing raw I don't think I need to specify that they shouldn't be that way. She told me I just said F to her ( I didn't curse at her I just said the word since I do curse & I was trying not to but it came out) & that she tried to fix it (by me coming back at 7:45pm) & I didn't want to do that since I've never called & complained before so what good restaurants do is they replace it the next time you go in. I order a few times a month from there & now I will never go back. You can see in the pics that the veggies are raw. I love onions but the white onions were overpowering since they were raw. It took 10 mins, fast but the quality was not good, under cooked & the rice idk what that was. Old? Have no idea. I thought the container would be more full too with sauce but it wasn't. Terrible overall unfortunately & the customer service was not good since she blamed me for not asking them to cook the veggies more. Also, my kid just told me her fried rice was cold. & we've had issues in the past w/that meal since the rice is clumpy or hard in it too. Reviewing only one dish out of the five items ordered : the #22, fried catfish with mushrooms and carrots in a brown sauce. The fish was so pungently fishy it could have attracted cats from 2 miles away! The texture was soggy and gross, and the dish had very few mushrooms but was overcome with carrots probably to disguise the disgusting fish. I called the manager to complain and she was not sympathetic: offered to refund the price if I returned the dish (a 20 minute drive!) or give 15% off ONE item in the future. So sorry to lose this restaurant off our rotation but we will NEVER order from them again! read more

I really enjoy my carry out from Bangkok 96! I don't like eating in the restaurant - I don't care for the redesign they did a few years ago. It feels very "diner-esque" and it feels like you're practically sitting on top of the people next to you. No privacy for conversations either. During the height of the pandemic, I mainly picked up meals from local restaurants, to support local businesses. As the pandemic stretched beyond a year, I've continued to eat locally but also ventured beyond the nearby suburbs a few times a month. I've always wanted to dine here, when I worked locally, but never found the time during my busy lunch breaks. The restaurant is located on Telegraph, just south of Michigan Ave. The restaurant was not opened for dine in, instead it converted this location to temporarily offer take-out. To maintain safety, orders can be picked up from one of two windows. On a week-end afternoon, the parking lot was filled with vehicles, its owners waiting for their orders to be prepared. The menu is extensive. There is a variety of starters including rolls, soups and salads. As well, noodles, seafood, duck and barbecue courses are available as entrées. I was craving Pad Thai, thin rice noodles with beef, egg, green onions, crushed peanuts, in a fragrant lemon-scented sauce. I loved the overall flavors of the dish but thought the beef was a bit overcooked. I also ordered the curry (half) duck, roast duck with pineapples, tomatoes, and green peppers in a sweet and spicy curry sauce. So delicious but the duck was neither meaty nor plentiful. I was hoping for papaya salad or Thai coconut rice but neither were available (most Thai restaurants in the area do not offer them either). So, my wife and I are stuck in Detroit due to the recent IT crisis with the airlines. I have no words. Anyways, we were fortunate to get a hotel room and searched for Asian restaurants in the area to eat for dinner and came across Bangkok 96. The name makes me giggle because of the way restaurants all over Asia name themselves. We walked to the restaurant (10 minute walk) and saw a very simple restaurant. Nothing opulent or fancy. We also noticed that there was no delivery service available. Just carry out or take your carry out orders to their tables inside. You order at the counter and they give you a number and they bring your food in take out containers but you can eat there as well. The environment is organized, not cluttered and clean. It wasn't crowded when we got there around 5:30pm. However as the minutes ticked on by, it was jamming! And we got our food quickly. We ordered the Pad Thai with chicken dish. So good! The right amount of fish sauce and sugar and chicken and noodles. My wife would have liked more bean sprouts. LOL. This is the best Pad Thai I have ever had. Hands down! And judging by the looks and smiles of the people around us, everything there was delicious. I was finally able to visit this location after going to the location at the Detroit Shipping Co several times. I stopped in to grab some dinner for me and my husband and we both were very happy that I made this decision. Since we are still dealing with COVID you can only call-in or walk up to do carry out orders. Since I close to the location at the time I just pulled up and ordered and the order taker was very nice and helped me decide what to order as well as customizing my order. I ordered the chicken, shrimp and rice and the bbq chicken with brown noodles both with medium heat. They give you enough food for two people per dish, it is well worth the money which is not expensive. The flavor is everlasting in your mouth and I love that the broccoli is fresh! We enjoyed our lunch here today (Friday during lent) many selections with and without meat. Our group had Jungle BBQ Fish which was a delightfully grilled catfish with 'good Smokey flavor' and tasty rice. My son had medium spice - nice burn, my hubby had 'no spice' which still had tons of flavor. I had Pud Thai with shrimp medium spice - yummy! I had a nice portion for lunch and the container was still full! For an appetizer we had Spicy Crab Wontons. We liked them. They had a nice clean seating area for eating in as well. Hello. Pre-Covid this was the best Thai food around as far as I'm concerned. very delicious. Went there recently and was very disappointed. The food was extremely salty and just not good. I'm from California and went here during a business trip. It has high ratings and I had vegetarians with me, so this seemed like it could serve both the veggies and myself (carnivore). Service is good and friendly. Prices are decent. Food was marginal for my taste and for my coworkers. Most items were super salty. I've been to SE Asia, and most of the items here did not resemble my experiences. I suspect it is hard to get authentic ingredients here? We opened with a round of "Fresh Rolls" - vegetarian spring rolls that are not fried. Good. Fresh and large - made for Michiganders. It went down from this highlight. I had Tom ka gai (chicken coconut milk soup). It was thin and salty with few other ingredients than some chicken and the coconut milk. And lots of salt. Ew. I had chicken Satay. I'd expect thin strips of marinated chicken on a stick - lightly bbq'd. What i got was some chunks of chicken lightly breaded and deep fried with a stick in it. There was a tiny flaming brazier, peanut-like (but thin and weird) sauce and a type of fish sauce served with it. The fried chicken was dry and the sauces didn't overcome this. All that said, edible. I had half. I ordered a Larb (type of salad). The salty (salty is a recurring theme here) vinegary bowl of greens was sort of soupy and I didn't have much of it. The other guys had tofu pad thai and veggie pad Thai. The veggie was better than the rest of our dishes. So, I should have given constructive feedback to the restaurant but I decided not to because I'm guessing this works for the local, largely white (my crew is beige and brown) folks here in Michigan. If you are from Cali, especially SF Bay or LA, this is not going to work out for you. Lesson: Michigan is a long ways from Thailand. read more

I came at 6pm on a weekday and it was very busy! The service was quick and efficient. The workers were all nice. I wasn't too hungry so I got fresh rolls which come with a cucumber garlic sauce. They were fantastic- but weren't anything extraordinary. Lettuce, carrots, chicken, cilantro, cucumber, rice paper. The sauce was incredible. My friend got the number 2 curry- it's red curry paste, coconut milk, peppers, chicken and some other things. She said it was very tasty but I didn't try it. Love love love this place from the 1st sight, 1st smell, 1st taste. Always a big fan. I like how the portions are big enough(for me) for Seconds and you can eat good for under $20. I like that there are choices from noodles or rice, or extra veggies! Keto friendly and any other diet friendly.
