Note that there are a LOT of chocolate-candy-ice cream and other general sweets shops along Banff Avenue. Their specialty is the caramel popcorn displayed in the window (presumably made with the big copper pot they have on display) and their Bear Paws (chocolate treat with cashews and caramel). Though I think bear paws are just something generally sold in the candy stores around here. One of the things that made it stand out to me was that they also carry a few different local products that would make great souvenirs. We mostly kept returning for the cartons of tea and chocolate bars they had up along the windows. Banff's Mountain Chocolates has all the essential flavors and kinds of chocolates, caramel popcorn, dipped apples, and ice cream. Besides this location, they also have another small store inside Fairmont Banff Springs. This one is on the central corner of Banff Avenue and Caribou Street, which makes it conveniently close to the Bear Street Parkade (parking structure) and the Bear Street Parking lot. The latter, an open parking lot (as well as street parking) has an hourly rate of $3 per hour from 8 AM to 8 PM. The Bear Street Parkade's first floor has the same hourly rate, but the second floor up is completely free. We mostly used the parkade when we needed to park. The only drawback is that so do most people, so check the counter they have at the entrance because that'll tell you if there are spaces available. Overall, I had been looking to maybe get a dipped apple but got a Milk Chocolate Rice Krispie Cluster instead. It was a great snack while hiking. Actually, in general, all these kinds of chocolate treats are great for when you're taking a day trip to the national park. XD For Americans, be aware that the dipped apples that are covered in what looks like M&Ms are actually covered in Smarties. Basically, Canadian M&Ms (still made by Nestle) but with a crunchier shell and a slightly different taste. There were also caramel apples dipped in smashed Skor candy, which is a kind of butter toffee. We REALLY like the Skor-dipped apples!

The succulent red candy and caramel covered apples in the window display immediately got us into the store. The place is a corner lot on the main strip in Banff, and if you are overwhelmed by the mountain views and the diverse selection of tourists walking you won't be able to concentrate because of the delicious aroma of chocolate permeating in the air. This store is wonderful, the counter space has great glass showcase of everything chocolate plus rows dedicated to fresh fudge that is made right there in the shop. The guys working there were going on glucose run which I volunteered to go and do but they didn't seem too impressed by my wit. That's okay... their fudge making presentation and their amazing selection of chocolate makes up for their lack of good humour. Come on guys you are in a touristic city after all, entertain your clients!

How can it be a chocolate if there's no chocolate-y/cocoa taste at all? Had the pecan cluster, one bite and i was done. Too bland. Hey Long Haired Mister working that night of Nov 2nd, show some decent work ethics will you? Please. You almost threw my chocolate in front of me.

The caramel corn is AMAZING! If you have a sweet tooth like me, you'd be doing yourself wrong by not picking up a bag. You can smell it the second you walk in and long for the smell the second you walk out. Not only that, they have so many different kinds of chocolate clusters. The line inside could be fairly long, so be prepared to wait! The only thing I have to say this store as lacking, were smiles. None of the staff seemed pleased to help you and one even stood there as I stood at the cash register to pay and turned his back to me to continue on with his conversation. Now that's not very nice! Also, watch out when you take pictures...they don't seem to like that very much. Regardless, I will be back for the sweet treats!

I initially wasn't interested in waiting in a long line for ice cream. But later decided to check them out at the end of my trip to satisfy my curiosity. Plus it was a warm day and I had already finished all of my shopping. Cows is located in the heart of Downtown Banff and is known for their hand-made premium ice cream. Cows has a variety of flavors with fun creative names like the Gooey Mooey, Cownadien Maple and Wowie Cowie. The people in line were really excited to be experiencing this place. I also noticed Cows has a large gift shop area that sells cow-themed merchandise and apparel. There was a lot of cool stuff to check out in the store. I grabbed my coffee flavored Caramel Moocchiato ice cream and one of their snack items and spent time in the gift shop. Overall, Cows was a fun experience and I am glad a was able to squeeze this place in at the end of my trip.

Our friends had walked the area prior and knew about this ice cream shop. So... we get out of dinner without dessert with the express idea of coming to Cows. It was a good decision. We took a walk there through beautiful downtown Banff, basically just following the people in front of us and them. Cows is well known with a very loyal following. Lots of people walking in and a fairly robust line moving very quickly. You walk into a store with lots of different products. We came in with the express idea of some cones. I don't remember the flavor (not my regular chocolate) but this ice cream is good... really good. Not even remembering the flavor I can tell you that is was rich and packed with flavor. Enjoyed every bit of it. After paying, we all strolled out and back down the street to the bus eating our delicious ice cream cones. KUDOs to the team at COWS.

Beavertails came up and we saw they had shops within Banff, so we decided to try them out after our lunch. They had a flavor called "mEHple" and since maple syrup is also a Canada staple, we figured this would be a good pick. What we didn't notice was the chocolate drizzle that was on top of the maple syrup in the menu photo. The chocolate overwhelmed the entire dessert, and was a bit too much for our group. The pastry was good, crispy and flaky, but we really couldn't get through the entire thing without getting a huge bite of chocolate syrup. I think if they had put less chocolate, or even removed the chocolate altogether and just left the maple syrup, that would've been way better!

Since maple is also something that screams Canada, we opted for the mEHple flavor. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a letdown. The pastry itself was good as it was light and flaky but still crispy, and we enjoyed the maple flavor. However, there was so much chocolate drizzled onto it that all we could taste was the overwhelming Hershey's chocolate drizzle-like taste. We didn't notice the chocolate drizzle on the menu photo, although I noticed there are a few different menus floating around, and some show the chocolate drizzle while others don't. However I saw a photo uploaded from a different Yelper of their mEHple pastry, and they had way less chocolate on theirs. I think it had to potential to be delicious, but it's just unfortunate that it was loaded with so much chocolate to the point where we couldn't really taste anything else. There were 6 of us that shared one BeaverTail and yet we couldn't even finish it. Overall, it was cool to try a uniquely Canadian dessert, but would recommend staying away from the ones with chocolate drizzle...or at least asking the staff to go light on the drizzle.
