I work at a small chocolate confectionary and always interested in checking out the competition. I really like the smaller, boutique type operations. This particular chocolate shoppe looked promising. They had a reasonably large selection, some looked quite unique and well done. When we stepped in, they offered us a small sample. It was a tasty bit of maple fudge. We ended up getting a couple of large Toffee Peanut Butter Cups. We ate them later, back on the bus, and honestly, they were a bit disappointing. The chocolate was way to thick for my tastes. But the filling itself was good. My suggestion? Spend more time knocking the chocolate out of the molds before letting them set. I should have checked out the reviews on this spot. The service was meh, didn't really act like they wanted to be there which is fine. But the fudge wasn't fudge. I love fudge, I do. It's my favorite thing. I look forward to it every time I see a chocolate shop. I was so excited. It's more like crunchy, caramelized fudge. Which is fine if you think that's what you're getting. But I wanted rich and creamy. Traditional fudge which is what they market. We ended up throwing it away we were so sad. read more

Nothing special, wasn't too impressed by the selection or the customer service. We were the only ones in the shop for about 3-4 minutes before we were acknowledged, even though I was already holding chocolate to purchase and we were clearly perusing the cases to buy more. I left with a dark chocolate cluster to enjoy that evening and my mom got a marzipan chocolate. Unfortunately neither of us liked our chocolates and we both ended up tossing them after a couple bites. The dark chocolate cluster was way too sugary for my liking, I don't think I have ever had a dark chocolate that was so sugary. Note that there are a LOT of chocolate-candy-ice cream and other general sweets shops along Banff Avenue. Their specialty is the caramel popcorn displayed in the window (presumably made with the big copper pot they have on display) and their Bear Paws (chocolate treat with cashews and caramel). Though I think bear paws are just something generally sold in the candy stores around here. One of the things that made it stand out to me was that they also carry a few different local products that would make great souvenirs. We mostly kept returning for the cartons of tea and chocolate bars they had up along the windows. Banff's Mountain Chocolates has all the essential flavors and kinds of chocolates, caramel popcorn, dipped apples, and ice cream. Besides this location, they also have another small store inside Fairmont Banff Springs. This one is on the central corner of Banff Avenue and Caribou Street, which makes it conveniently close to the Bear Street Parkade (parking structure) and the Bear Street Parking lot. The latter, an open parking lot (as well as street parking) has an hourly rate of $3 per hour from 8 AM to 8 PM. The Bear Street Parkade's first floor has the same hourly rate, but the second floor up is completely free. We mostly used the parkade when we needed to park. The only drawback is that so do most people, so check the counter they have at the entrance because that'll tell you if there are spaces available. Overall, I had been looking to maybe get a dipped apple but got a Milk Chocolate Rice Krispie Cluster instead. It was a great snack while hiking. Actually, in general, all these kinds of chocolate treats are great for when you're taking a day trip to the national park. XD For Americans, be aware that the dipped apples that are covered in what looks like M&Ms are actually covered in Smarties. Basically, Canadian M&Ms (still made by Nestle) but with a crunchier shell and a slightly different taste. Very limited options when we popped in during a Wednesday afternoon, also when I popped in on Thursday evening. The store generally looks bare. The staff wasn't too helpful, and actually when I asked if our chocolates can be packaged individually for each guests I was told no..... that they would only put them in the brown sleeves. Friend got a box of 6 turtles for me from here and they were quite delicious. They were big, had a nice layer of chocolate (white, milk, and dark), almonds, and caramel. They were a bit too sweet and the dark chocolate didn't have much chocolate flavor, but they were otherwise good. Walked by them in Banff when I visited, seemed like a nice shop. read more

The succulent red candy and caramel covered apples in the window display immediately got us into the store. The place is a corner lot on the main strip in Banff, and if you are overwhelmed by the mountain views and the diverse selection of tourists walking you won't be able to concentrate because of the delicious aroma of chocolate permeating in the air. This store is wonderful, the counter space has great glass showcase of everything chocolate plus rows dedicated to fresh fudge that is made right there in the shop. The guys working there were going on glucose run which I volunteered to go and do but they didn't seem too impressed by my wit. That's okay... their fudge making presentation and their amazing selection of chocolate makes up for their lack of good humour. Had a very good experience. My mom loves ice creams so we had stopped here to try out their maple walnut ice cream. It was very delicious. I had left my wallet in the store by mistake and drove to Calgary airport to fly back to USA, where I realized that I had forgotten is there. I had a bunch of credit cards and my DL. I called in to the store just to check if I had left it there. Kem picked up the phone and ensured that the wallet is safe. He said he will mail it to my address in the USA and he doesn't want me to pay for it. I got the wallet the very next day. We hear about so many bad experiences on the internet and here I got to see such a wonderful gesture from this joint towards the customer, goes to show how much they value their customer. HOW is it possible that chocolate DOESN'T have taste? Well, based on the almonds from the Almond Bark I got, it is easy....OLD....OLD....OLD :-( We went to Rocky Mountain Chocolates the FIRST time in October (we went to Lake Louise for Thanksgiving and had a day in the town of Banff) We had just stopped in to get a little something to take back with us to the hotel and gosh, you would have thought from the crowd that it was actually good....however, maybe they were giving away free chocolate that day and so everyone would have been willing to eat shoe leather.... We got one piece of Almond Bark, Chocolate Covered Seafoam and one of Chocolate Covered Pecans. That I write that I THREW them ALL AWAY (less the Chocolate Covered Seafoam because my companion was desperate to save the situation) is NO LIE. YES, the chocolate and nuts were SO VERY bad that after the one bite I basically took the loss (why would you want to eat anything that bad?) and through it away.... During New Year's we were back in Banff and we walked by the shop again.....I was ALMOST tempted to go in and give it another go....but I chose not. THis is not the rocky mountain chocolate factory that is part of a chain. I thought it was and have been seeking it out since having "sea foam" in San Diego in December. It's sponge toffee covered in white chocolate. I was disappointed to find out this is not the place. There is one in west edmonton mall, but they only have sea foam on occasion. The caramel corn is AMAZING! If you have a sweet tooth like me, you'd be doing yourself wrong by not picking up a bag. You can smell it the second you walk in and long for the smell the second you walk out. Not only that, they have so many different kinds of chocolate clusters. The line inside could be fairly long, so be prepared to wait! The only thing I have to say this store as lacking, were smiles. None of the staff seemed pleased to help you and one even stood there as I stood at the cash register to pay and turned his back to me to continue on with his conversation. Now that's not very nice! I'm surprised by the complaints that this isn't the chain store, I am glad it wasn't (I needn't come to banff for something I can get in the suburbs) I went in only planning to photograph the beautiful candy apples, but the smell of the caramel corn that they were making was simply irresistible! Like everything in banff, it's priced for a tourist market, but not out of line. The caramel corn was a great snack with a nice balance of salt and sweet. It was a bit sticky, so make sure to have a toothpick or some water to handle that situation. read more

This place is pretty much heaven on earth. After all, where else can you walk in where there are candy apples galore, chocolates at every glance, and sweet goods in the form of brittle, fudge and chocolatey-caramel goodness?!? One of a few chocolate stores in downtown Banff, Rocky Mountain Chocolate is a must-stop shop. With a window that overlooks a counter where they stir fudge and attract patrons, it's hard, rather impossible, to walk by and not peak your head in. I spent the day in Banff a few days ago and wanted to bring home some goods. After spending a good 15 minutes perusing their shelves and display cases, I finally decided to purchase their 'Murtles.' It's like a turtle chocolate, but MASSIVE. It was possibly one of the best things I've ever tasted. While Rocky Mountain Chocolate is one of my favourite places to frequent in Banff, equally because of the amazing goods and the AMAZING customer service, I have to take off one star for the pricing. The chocolate here is *Expensive*. Two Murtles cost me $14... DAAAAMN. I mean, I still bought them, but I had a moment when the total came up on the register. It's expensive...I'll warn you. But I'll also warn you that if you don't visit this place AT LEAST once in your lifetime, you run the risk of seriously missing out. It's your call. read more

After spending money on a park pass, gondola, lunches, shopping....we wanted to take something home for others and heard of the fudge in Banff but had not been told of the business name. Fudge is expensive not to mention buying it in Banff. Two flavours were purchased here. Fudge should not crumble when you cut it or fall apart everywhere. It honestly seemed like the fudge we were given was old product sitting way on the back of a shelf for a very long time instead of anything fresh. This could be a good business but not if they're pawning old fudge at a high price to tourists - shame. If you taste the fudge make certain that you 'retest' the large piece you purchase. I'm surprised to see all these negative reviews, I guess I've always been going to the spot on a good day and only getting good staff, usually they have thick Australian accents and they're very nice. Yes the prices are a little high if you're not careful... But what do you expect you're in a tourist destination. And you're just treating yourself. However if you're careful you can get a deal, for example there's something unbelievably delicious and decadent called Tiger butter... It's a combination of fudge and white chocolate, covered w a caramel drizzle,probably one of the sweetest things I've ever tasted except my own homemade Nanaimo bars. Absolutely delicious. And not too expensive. They charge you by weight and tiger butter is actually pretty light, therefore not too expensive. However my favourite thing is a little bit more expensive, I can't member what they call it but it looks like a massive turtle ..... layers of caramel and milk chocolate and pecans.......my kids think it's called Myrtle ,,,,,,, delish !!!!! We have been here 12 times already and I am never disappointed with the product or the freshness or the customer service or the friendly staff or the selections or the cleanliness. Honestly I don't know what these people are talking about they have nothing to complain about....PS If you are looking for a restaurant locally; Whatever you do, NEVER go to the Calgary restaurant The Guild. As a gift we purchased (3) large caramel and peanuts clusters with chocolate on top for over $6 each. Two days later when our friends bit into them it was obvious that the peanuts were RANCID, THEY HAD GONE BAD!!! Needless to say we were not only embarassed but very unhappy to find out that we had spent over $18 on treats that no one would want to eat. A waste of time and money. Everyone in my family tried something chocolate; bear claw, chocolate raisin, Oreo bark, and we all thought it was terrible. The chocolate tasted waxy and flavourless and left a gross waxy coating in my mouth. Caramel apple was ok, nothing special. The staff were dismissive and impatient, complaining loudly about wanting to be finished work, and talking amongst themselves instead of helping customers. I will never go back. read more

I have eaten chocolate all over the world. This is brown wax. It had no chocolate flavor. It was not smooth in my mouth, it was grainy and gritty. There was no creamy, melty consistency, it just crumbled in my mouth. We bought all different items and they all had this problem. I believe using cocoa butter instead of vegetable oil would help. I never thought I would see the day where I threw out chocolate, but this was not really chocolate so it doesn't count, I guess. read more

Well, I'm giving this 3 stars, but really I think it's more like 2.5 stars :P got some fudge here the other day, and while it was pretty good, I've had better. We got chocolate amaretto, which didn't have much of an amaretto flavour to it, but still tasted fine aside from that. We also got some vanilla pecan & chocolate rum raisin fudge. These ones we didn't actually try til we got home to Edmonton the next day, but I was a bit concerned when I went to unwrap them- I get the impression it had been sitting there a while cos despite being wrapped in plastic wrap, the fudge blocks were noticeably hard. One block even broke in half when I unwrapped it. That said, the fudge still tasted pretty good, so I can't complain too much :P I think next time I'm in Banff and want some fudge, I'll probably go elsewhere, but we could've done worse I suppose :P read more

This is overpriced cheap tasting chocolate. Again it is overpriced due to the town it is located in. You would be better heading further down the block towards Hudson's Bay and find the Bernard Callebaut store. Again this place is ok for the tourist factor but it is poor quality. I would prefer a Cadbury Dairy Milk over something in this store. read more

Peanut brittle is delicious, turtles are delicious, sponge toffee is delicious... and the list goes on and on. I did not sample any fudge, unfortunately. I do like that the peanut brittle is not too sweet. I am not a fan of toothache-sweet chocolate or candies. read more

Low or moderate quality chocolate. I got the dark chocolate almond bark, milk chocolate almond bark and fudgy chocolate today. I tasted the former two and they were dull to the taste , lacking the rich flavour of chocolate and loaded with sugar. Skip this shop if you go to Banff. We were enticed to buy some caramel popcorn from the lovely looking popcorn in the window and the smell of the shop. It smelled soooo good. We had such high hopes. One bag of caramel popcorn and 2 blocks of fudge later handed to us by the rudest sales girl in Banff later we suffered pure disappointment. The caramel popcorn was hard and tasted burnt. The fudge blocks were both poorly wrapped, rock hard and obviously very old. Save your money - do not go to this shop. read more

Murtles...tantalizing carmel, sprinkled with cashews, and then covered in chocolate! This one treat had my wife and I craving each return to banff, when we could get more murtles! Then they changed the recipe to replace the cashews with peanuts...major let down! The rating 2/5 is for "meh. I've experienced better." This is indeed the case, hopefully they replace the peanuts with cashews in the future, but until then, we will leave the murtles in the display shelf, with everything else. read more
