Sadly, probably the worst margaritas we've ever had (and we've had a bunch). The escargot was not the usual but it was a pretty good queso based version. Nope, not going to be the place where you find good food. The only thing Puerto Rican about this place is the music. Everything else is not that great. We came here because when we stopped by the Esperanza area most restaurants were closed. So we decided to grab a bite here because we were really hungry. I ordered the red snapper with veggie rice. Hubby ordered paella (which was the veggie rice with seafood added). Kids got Vieques sliders. We ate it, but no one loved what they ate. It was a way to feed a hungry belly. After a horrible experience, cold food, inattentiveness, rude, apathetic, discriminatory service. They treat locals differently. A little background. A few years ago before I moved back to the island, I was visiting my grandmother I asked her to meet me there for dinner, long story short she explained how they kept rushing her to the point where she was teared up. The server kept raising her plate asking if she was finished and slapping it back on the table when my grandma told her she was not, she just kept rushing her to finish her food and pay, meanwhile my grandfather was tossing back beers and eating as well, clearly good customers. When I finally got there they were sweet to me, but probably because I am not as brown as my grandparents. And I say that with the upmost respect and the truth is, I don't get discriminated as my skin tone is more of a typical "tourist", if you know where this is going! but I am proud LOCAL VIEQUENSE. Now to the cherry on top: I came back recently to treat my mom while she came to visit, I was automatically charged 18% gratuity, and then the server STILL asked if I wanted to tip. Distracted by my discomfort and annoyance I accidentally added another 18%. I got a printout but when I realized I was charged almost $160. I did the math and remembering the automatic gratuity, I realized I was actually charged 36% in tip which totaled a little over $40 in tip. I went back to the host stand and asked for a itemized receipt. The server seemed angsty about my approach to the counter, walked over and said he'd settle it and he pulled out a $20 bill from his order book and handed it to me. read more

We went to this restaurant at night, because we were desperate to find paella and mojito. If you are looking for mojito and paella, this restaurant would be a perfect place for you, as lots of restaurant along the beach don't have these two options! We arrived in Esperanza an hour before check in and hungry so walked into Bananas for a bite. The food as good. We split the coconut covered Mahi appetizer and the fish tacos. But the service is what made it the perfect welcome to Vieques. All were bland and far overpriced for PR. Ambiance: 5/10. The beachside vibe is nice enough. A chicken waddling around the dining room was a nice touch. They were blasting USA top 40 type music, though, and the staff was composed almost entirely of non-locals. In sum: there are plenty of other places along the Malecon in Esperanza. Great vibe but average food. However, what really disappointed me about this place was the automatically added and FORCED 20% gratuity. Seriously??? No warning or anything mentioned prior to ordering (the menu does state that tip is added for large parties, but nothing for parties less than 5). When I asked my waiter about the added tip, all he said was that it is automatically added for this time of year "because the owner realized 'we' don't make any money". Really good place! Great location facing the sea, chill atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food!! It's early afternoon, so we only wanted some small bites. We ordered escargo and mahi bites, and we definitely made the right choice! The mahi bites are in coconut crust, so it's crunchy outside and juicy inside; the escargo is very well flavored with white wine and sage cream, and it has Roquefort crostini at the bottom. Drink wise, I had Pina Colada, and my friend had Sato, a blend of tropical fruit juices, coconut rum, coco Lopez, and a touch a grenadine (I copied this from their menu). On our first night in the area we decided to grab dinner at Bananas. The atmosphere is fantastic, it's perfect for this side of town, it feel both relaxed but with a bit of fun. I ordered the coconut fish with fries, my girlfriend went with the fish tacos, we also ordered Tostones as a starter. We sipped our beers while listening to the waves crash just across the street, how much better can it get? Our food came out pretty quickly. Let's start with my favorite, the Tostones!! OMG, so good! They were hot and crispy and the dipping sauce was fantastic. I did add a little salt to mine and that made them even better. I still crave these and wanted them everyday we were there. My fish coconut and avocado sandwich was ok. I was expecting a little more hit with the coconut, but really didn't taste it at all. The fish tacos came out looking amazing, and my girlfriend said they tasted the same. We ordered a slice of Key Lime Pie to finish off. It was ok, it lacked that tang kick key lime has to offer, it was more of a lime pie. I will say when the bill came it was a bit more than I had expected. Wonderful location and amazing staff... if you come to Vieques, do your homework. Chickens and horses have free reign of the island and are welcome In this restaurant... along with every other outdoor restaurant. Don't be a cheap "donkey" and try to get free food and dry cleaning bills paid because you don't do your homework lol the staff handled an incident with exceptional poise and professionalism. Side note- literally nothing happened to these people until the idiot girl tried to mess with the chickens. Even then, she got NOTHING on her.. the staff handled their yelling and threats amazingly... they love their staff and do not accept threats and humiliation tactics to get free food/ services. The rest of us patrons? We said what needed to be heard. 10/10 will come back here over and over. read more

Um. So. One word. Tourists. Fish tacos, burgers, a so-so ceviche, watery pina coladas, and service that made me want to ask them if they felt okay. I mean, if I was an ex-pat waiting tables in paradise, I'd be a little happier personally. The presentation of everything was nice. We had the three sliders, and 2 of the 3 fish were overcooked - the tuna one was obviously so frozen solid in the middle when cooked that eating it made me feel like a vulture chewing on carrion, but the lentil salad side was tasty. The coconut-crusted fish sandwich served with french fries was also good. It stands out on Yelp because a lot of people have reviewed it. We only stopped here because after driving a couple of hours, we were famished and didn't have the energy to look further. It's easy to find, and the food came out quick, so there's that. read more

Drank: Painkillers, they were great. Appetizer: (the only negative) order Tuna Poke. When it arrived to the table the smell was pungent (sign that it is not fresh at all). It tasted terrible. I made an effort to be very respectful but to ask the waiter to take it back as it was inedible. When he came back he asked me if that was my first time having tuna poke (‼)and proceded to explain it's preparations which was defined on the menu. Very rude to imply that either my pallet wasn't developed or that I'm the problem with the tuna. I was quite insulted with that comment. It was enough to decide to not return to the restaurant when I visit from PR. Main course: The grilled wahoo was delicious as was the lobster risotto. Restaurant is full of tourists of course. You don't have that many choices since the town is so small. Menu offers a mix of American and Caribbean food. I tried to stay away from American food at all cost while I was in Vieques. I wanted to experience local food. Since restaurant offers Caribbean food, I thought I should give Jerk Chicken a try. Well .. I was quite disappointed. I definitely had a lot better Jerk Chicken in NYC. Jerk Chicken here was kind of sweet, but at least it was juicy. Rice and beans were meh. read more
