I tried Bambu Kitchen & Sushi Restaurant in Oakdale for the first time tonight via delivery, and as someone who loves both sushi and Thai food, I was excited to give it a shot. The sushi genuinely impressed me. It was affordable, flavorful, and the fish tasted fresh. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and really appreciated that the tuna wasn't ground into mush - these were solid, thick cuts of fish with just the right amount of heat. My only minor critique is that the roll could've been wrapped a bit tighter to keep the end pieces from falling apart, but honestly, it didn't take away from how delicious it was. I would happily order it again (and again). The Drunken Mussels were also a hit. The portion size was generous and the sauce was salty in a satisfying way--overall, a great dish. I ordered the Spicy & Sweet Blast Curry (mild), but unlike other Thai spots where mild still brings the heat, this one had zero spice and ended up feeling a bit flat. It wasn't bad; just not very flavorful or authentic-tasting to me. Next time, I'd skip the curry or at least order it hotter, because I think more spice could make a big difference. When my wife and I walked in, we decided to give the restaurant a try because she had been there years ago and wanted to see if anything had changed enough to make us want to return. I ordered the teriyaki chicken kabobs for my appetizer and the chicken and shrimp Pad Thai. The food was delivered on a robot, which was pretty cool. However, the noodles in the Pad Thai were hard, the chicken tasted a bit stale, and they messed up my order; there were no shrimp in it. The man working there remade the dish, and while it was okay, the chicken still tasted like it was a day old. My wife didn't care much for her Pho either. The biggest disappointment was that I came to visit this restaurant specifically to try the sushi, and there was no sign or notice on the door stating that sushi wouldn't be available because the chef was gone for a week and a half. We didn't find out there was no sushi until we put our appetizer order in, which should have been told prior to us being seated. I was glad to give the restaurant a try, but I won't be returning. The food lacked flavor, the decor was rather basic, and not having sushi, which was the main reason for my visit, was just too much of a letdown for a first visit. read more

We don't like giving poor reviews, but Bambu has slipped into the poor category. Not enough staff started the poor experience, the food was subpar, taste of the pad Thai was out of a box, the Thai iced tea from a flavor packet. Also, as cool as having a robot deliver your food- the background was a constant droan of 70's TV show theme songs- including Green Acres and the Brady Bunch. This review is more focused on the food itself as I picked it up to go. The ordering and pick up process was fine. The food was terrible. Thai curries were watery, pepper forward, and bland. No thai flavors came through just pepper, old vegetables and watery curry base. That goes for both we ordered. Just terrible. My wife ordered pad Thai, this also had water in the bottom of the to go plate. Bland and basically tasteless. I already knew this was place was a problem as they claim to do 3 countries cuisines. That typically means they will be sub par or marginal at all of them. This was def the case. Not to mention we paid 80 bucks for 3 entree's and an app which was also terrible. We used to go to the Maplewood location quite often when it was still open but have only been to the Oakdale location twice. Her stuff is way way overpriced! Every little thing you have to pay an extra fee for which is ridiculous. When we went the other day after all the extra fees (plus the extra fee for using a credit card) our meal cost over $90. What we got was two glasses of lemon ginger tea, 4 egg rolls (two pork and two veggie), a tuna sushi roll, a vegetable sushi roll, a sweet potato sushi roll (made with Japanese sweet potatoes), pork egg foo young with fried rice and a half order of coconut curry with tofu. The Pork and the tofu each cost us an extra 4 dollars. We also had to pay 3 extra dollars to switch from white rice to fried rice and $2 extra for two sides of spicy mayo (which wasn't even spicy). That's a total of $13 extra for things that should not be that much of an up charge. Not to mention the $2 extra for using a credit card. The food is not worth the prices they are asking for and this time they had a $8000 robot deliver our food when there was only one other person in the restaurant. No wonder they have such high prices!!! We will not be back as nothing is great except the egg rolls, the prices are outrageous and the Two times I've asked for my food spicy they ignored me and didn't put in any spice. There are a lot better Asian restaurants out there where you get more food, with good quality with way cheaper prices! read more

In the area and wanted Chinese. Well this is an Asian mix and you'll find what you are in the mood for. I got the pork egg foo young. Most are very similar, but you can't compare it to anything. The sauce is so unique. First it is very dark brown in color with a sweet taste to it. Second the preparation is the egg patty is set then the sliced pork pieces are on top smothered in the delicious gravy. 3 huge pieces. I got the lunch special that came with a Vietnamese eggroll, also good. Basil got the sesame chicken that I enjoyed my bite. I had a sip of his iced tea and I'll get that next time. We were almost tricked looking at the menu. Looked at the front and turned it over with a bunch of stuff on the back. This was a huge win for us as parents of a child with celiac disease. We have a hard time finding good Asian options (besides PF Chang's) that have good protocols. We stopped here on our way back from a soccer game after reading about it on the Find Me Gluten Free app. The staff was very knowledgeable and they have a dedicated fryer for gluten free so we were able to get GF eggrolls with tofu and GF sesame chicken with fried rice and it was all delicious. They also use separate cutting boards and utensils for GF sushi and we tried a few different rolls. Everything was so good and my daughter loved trying a new place. I placed a very very last minute grub hub order from this establishment yesterday night. It has been so hard finding Asian cuisine that is also gluten free because many dishes use soy sauce or other wheat products. I fell in love with the gf spring rolls and the gf Kung pao chicken and gf fried rice. It even came with a gf soy sauce packet. I don't eat gluten free for fun, it's a life style changed I had to make for my health. While I order online this time to be delivered i have picked up before and found that I loved the parking and the outside area of this establishment. The inside has nice seating and a more open floor kind of plan which is super convenient. I haven't tried many of their dishes but if you need something gluten free, I'd give it a try. read more

All I can say is, "Wow!" Jeff was our server and he graciously guided us to a larger table after we placed our order. Oysters, seafood hot pot, gluten-free fried rice, sushi galore, egg foo young...I get tired just typing about it. Everything was delicious. Hungry for fresh spring rolls so I ventured to the newest location of Bambú in Oakdale. Its in a great place and it is so clean and pretty inside. There are 6 seats at the sushi bar and plenty of other seating in the well lit space. It was a quiet night-prob because of the snow but plenty of staff and they were all super friendly. I ordered the regular fresh spring rolls that come with the house made peanut sauce. Main course was chicken Pho and hot tea. The biggest problem is everything is so delish you want to eat every last drop but the servings are plentiful! This would be a great place for groups-big or small. Bambu is a pan-Asian spot in a stripmall in Oakdale. It labels all its vegetarian dishes (nearly all of which are vegan by default), but is too safe/generic in its recipes and didn't leave much of an impression. The Twin Cities is blessed with excellent Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese places; Bambu comes across as a tribute band playing the greatest hits. It's fine, but not the real thing. The vegetable spring roll ($3) is utterly bland and forgettable, consisting of rice noodles stuffed inside a rice wrapper. get the Vietnamese crispy egg roll ($5 for two) instead, which is much tastier. The khoai tay fried potatoes ($11) is part of the Vietnamese section of the menu and one of the more unusual/interesting dishes. It tasted okay on the first few bites with a cool mix of green onion and fried potatoe, but becomes a starchy mess after twenty minutes and doesn't reheat well at all. The broccoli stir fry ($13) and Bambu signature stir fry ($11) are nearly indistinguishable from each other. I'd go with the Bambu signature because it's cheaper. The chow fun ($11) was fine but nothing special. The online ordering has a glitch which doesn't allow you to modify it to pick your protein, but the restaurant clued in that we'd want tofu given all our other dishes. Lastly, I had high hopes for the green curry ($12), as it's hard to find a truly vegan/vegetarian Southeast Asian curry (99% of the time they use shrimp paste in the curry mix). At Bambu, it tasted okay, but was basically a thick coconut creme soup filled with vegetables and tofu. It didn't have the kick or lightness of a true Thai or Cambodian curry. We had the honor of experiencing an omakase of a lifetime. We were astonished at the level of detail Chef Joey put into his artwork. Because that's what it truly was, artwork. He constantly plays with different flavors, textures, and combinations to ensure that he continuously expands what we believe sushi to be. Food is his passion, and you could feel how happy he is when he sees you enjoying his creations. Chef Joey is one of a kind, and he earnestly tries to put forth his best work with his customers in mind. Now on to the food. The number of courses varies based on the season and the day. The menu will rotate monthly/bi-monthly based on what type of seafood is available at it's freshest. There were a variety of dishes from hamachi kama, a mexican-japanese fusion tostada, to nigiri. Each dish was well thought-out and well executed. There were elements of sweetness, spiciness, acidity, richness, salty, and the list goes on. I used to go to this restaurant about every other week because there are not that many places in this area that have vegan options. The waiter is oftentimes rude to us because he is overwhelmed. It's usually just him and a robot no matter how busy the restaurant gets. One time, he was especially rude to my husband and me and even tho we still gave him a 20% tip at the end because we felt bad for him, we decided that was the last time we would go there. He said he was stressed because another table was being indecisive, but it was a bad excuse to be so rude to us. I hope this restaurant would consider hiring more wait staff to help this man out so that he is not so overwhelmed. A robot can only assist so much. First time my husband and I have been to this restaurant and we will not go back. Sesame chicken and fried rice were bland and had absolutely no flavor. I ordered peanut sauce to go with my greasy egg rolls (never received that). The Pad thai was swimming in way to much sauce and the shrimp was very fishy smelling. I told our server and he clearly did not care. He brought us to-go boxes and that was about it. Service was mediocre at best. The robot that delivered our food was different. I asked for a knife and instead of our server going to get one he sent the robot to deliver it to us (we were the only ones in the restaurant) . Everything is way overpriced. They have a few kinks to work out in decor and service, but the food is WOWZA good. You have to understand that for someone like me who is gluten free, you don't run across a menu everyday with delicious classics like egg rolls, sesame chicken, and orange chicken that you can actually eat! I had heard about their other location in Maplewood, but was so excited when this location in Oakdale opened up by me. We went for dinner on their third day of service and they were still unpacking a bit. The dining room was a bit of a mess and they hadn't finished the decor, but the server (who happened to be the owner) was nice, prompt, and attentive. Only issue was, she was the only one. So, it made service a bit slow, but no biggie. Back to the food. For starters, we shared the Vietnamese crispy egg rolls. YUM! Delicious and crunchy, these are exactly what you look for in an egg roll. For dinner, I could resist the Sesame Chicken. I was skeptical wondering how in the heck they could take this deep fried delicacy and make it gluten free, but after my first bite, I was a believer. Crispy, sweet and savory, and fresh white meat chicken. SO good. My husband order the Kung Pao Chicken and ate literally every piece. It's awesome how many different substitutions and options there are for a variety of dietary needs. We wanted to support local businesses & opted to order from Bambu vs a chain. We order the orange chicken & Kung Pao chicken. Neither of us finished even half of our meal. The amount fish sauce used was really overwhelming in every bite. The Kung Pao didn't even have a hint of us spice & came swimming in the thinnest sauce that was the consistency of watered down soy sauce. Orange chicken had no orange flavor at all. This place was awesome!!! I have been hoping for a good Vietnamese/ Asian restaurant to pop up locally around Oakdale ever since the Wild Orchid owners sold, and this is the place. The server we had was very polite and kind. They didn't have a veggie pho, but they made one for my fiancé and she said it was the best she ever had. I always tell how good the pho is by the broth and it was fantastic. Much better than I thought. The pot stickers were fresh and tasty. The general sol chicken was also very fresh and light. It was lightly breaded and the sauce wasn't very heavy, but it had really good flavor. There sushi should be here soon! Will be eating here much more often. The best Asian we have had in MN since we have been here the last 3 years. We had the bamboo stir fry and lettuce wraps and based on those we would try anything else. It was full of true Asian flavors and not just brown gravy like all the others we have tried. Excellent!! read more
