    great food.

Shout to Brixton! The food was amazing! Had the curry chicken and it was excellent...they use good ingredients. Sure, I wished the portions were bigger, but you can't have everything. If you are visiting the UK, you should go and hit up this place. You will not be disappointed.

Tucked around the corner from the bustling High Street opposite Lambeth Town Hall, Bamboula is one of Brixton's true gems. Having lived in Brixton my whole life, I'm ashamed to say that I only 'discovered' Bamboula's a couple of years ago after a friend took me there for lunch. The restaurant is small and intimate, with the decor authentic Caribbean (think bamboo, warm bright colours and greenery). During busy times (lunchtimes & weekends generally) it's advisable to book as you may have to wait for a table, and it can be a little awkward hanging around in the walkways as you await a seat. During the summer (& during less warmer times if you're brave) there is also the option to sit outside to dine which is a popular option. The foodwell, one word - fantastic. A great selection on the menu featuring the usual suspects such as jerk chicken, ackee & saltfish, oxtail etc all cooked to perfection, not over-oily (can't take too much grease) and well seasoned. The callaloo rice is a firm favourite for me. Prices are very reasonable, and the lunchtime menu is great value for money. Service is friendly, although a little slow during busy times so you may be stretched to fit a leisurely lunch into an hour timeframe. That aside, Bamboula is an ideal restaurant to dine with friends & colleagues - and is a great takeaway too!

My oxtail was pretty good but on the spicier side due to all the peppercorn in the sauce. However, the mango chutney and coleslaw helped with reducing the spice. In terms of flavor itself, it very mild. I prefer more thyme, tomato paste and just more seasoning in general. The place is definitely on the cozy side since most of their seating is outside. Unfortunately it was 32 degrees so I opted for inside where there's only 4 tables. I was a solo dinner, so I was placed with a group which was fine with me since it was so cold. But heads up for any anxious solo eaters that you may have to sit with strangers. The waitstaff were really nice and accommodating which I really appreciated. Overall I'm glad I stopped by to eat

Drinks: 4/5 On Saturdays non alcoholic drinks are free if you come in before 12 PM so I got a pot of tea, an espresso, a latte, and an orange and pineapple juice. Disappointed that they didn't offer a chai tea latte or a macchiato. Appetizers: 5/5 Mac & Cheese Bites The Mac and Cheese bites were phenomenal, well spiced and seasoned and a good crunch on the fry. Trini Doubles A nice roti with very well seasoned curried chickpeas Entree: 4/5 Big Vegan Grill Down The mushroom and avocado were incredibly seasoned with a jerk marinade and seasoning, respectively. But the plantain could've been slightly riper and I was disappointed to see them use the same roti and curried chickpeas in the trini doubles and this entree, I was hoping for some diversity. Vegan Yardbird Lovely vegetarian take on this classic dish. I had never thought to combine jerk seasoned avocado with a sweet and savory dish like this, but it worked really well. The vegan yardbird alternative is quite believable, and has a nice taste and texture. But the watermelon was small and almost translucent, not a ripe or in season fruit. Pudding/Dessert: 4/5 The Chili Chocolate Brownie had a nice flavor, but was quite obviously vegan in that it quickly fell apart and lacked textural integrity, there was also very little if any of the chili spice flavor it speaks of. Creamy Coconut Ice Cream was delectable. A very nice ice cream served in, for some reason, 3 small ramekins

First things first, Brixton is an awesome neighborhood with so much culture & black people so as one can imagine there were many restaurants that cater to the Caribbean cuisine. I ordered the mango shrimp wrap with fries and my homegirl had chicken. The cocktails were 2 for 1 and very strong. The ambiance here was super colorful, vibrant and very spacious, including a full bar, art filled walls and Caribbean music. I can't wait to return!!

If you are used to the ubiquitous Caribbean Jerk Chicken and have not yet tried Trini food, go on be adventurous widen your culinary palette and get yourself down to Roti Jouper, you will not be disappointed! To describe Roti Jouper merely as a Caribbean Takeaway is so missing something that distinguishes this and The Shepherd's Bush take-out from all the other Carib Takeaways. What makes this place so special? It is an authentic Trinidadian Takeaway, the creations from this beautiful island are distinctly different from the rest of the Caribbean. That this place is always busy speaks volumes, having previously visited Trinidad & Tobago I can vouch that the delicious wide ranging menu is 100% authentic. The cheerful staff who work here from these islands serve you with a smile and help to create a 'buzz.' On the menu there is far more to explore than just the overhead displays, check out the mouth watering Mac Cheese cakes and bread. Also so much from the menu you can freeze, so well worth the effort to stock up if you have some distance to travel. Roti Jouper was actually discovered quite by accident, and one very positive outcome after my dear friend from Trinidad had been robbed of a purse ( eventually returned intact minus all the cash bar £1 ) seeking solace at a café outside Archway Tube Station, we struck up conversation after picking up a Trini accent, 'if you want authentic Trini food, do get yourselves down to Roti Jouper in Clapham and mention that Raij Paul Barrackpoor sent you' Within five minutes we were on our way, just round the corner from Clapham North on the Northern Line, or Clapham High St on the Overground, and wow we were soon transported back to Trinidad. Ordered a massive takeout, which my dear friend took back to her flat in Portslade Brighton. On 16th October I popped back for another order so heavy that the canvas bag came apart at the seams, this will soon be on its way with me back to Brighton, and thanks for the very generous 'extras.'

I got the doubles and whilst I was surprised the filling had the texture of refried beans (rather than the whole chickpeas I had at a roti place in Stokie), it was delicious and a bit spicy. I could have devoured two of them! I also got the shrimp roti with all four of the veg fillings option. However, opening it at home, it was heavy on the chickpeas and spinach but I didn't detect pumpkin. Oh well! It still tasted fantastic (and is not as spicy as the doubles). For a total of £6.50 I had two dinners. Score. I am deducting a star bc it's cash only. C'mon guys, it's 2017, get with the program!

Clean like the home of someone with OCD and bright. There were only three small tables and six chairs I believe. The girl at the counter was quite friendly. She chatted easily, smiled like the moon was made of cheese and that was the most excellent news since Bill and Ted and was very helpful in recommending what to eat. We settled on goat curry with rice and beans (called peas I think) along with a fish patty and a vegetable patty. The food, though maybe not a vegetarian's delight nor a health freak's idea of fun, was scrumptious. The patties were flaky as an ex-hippy who can't give up their flower child days and perfectly spicy. The curry was flavorful. I've never eaten goat and even though goats eat everything, they've never eaten me, but I'd eat goat again even though I haven't given goat a fair chance to chomp at my fingers. The rice had a hint of coconut which transported you across the oceans to a sunnier place with blue ocean and sandy beaches (otherwise known as Slovakia). The meal filled us right up like a car at a petrol station and stuck to our bones like your tongue to a frozen pole when you try to lick it.
