Don't let the outside fool you. I have been past this place so many times. I finally had the opportunity to stop in. It was currently takeout only so I ordered a classic Bibimbap. The lady who owns it is so sweet. Their internet was down so its currently cash only. So delicious and such a big serving for only $10!! Will be back-and hopefully one day to be able to eat inside!

If you are looking for authentic home-made Korean dishes, this is the place! Compared to other restaurants, the food here are prepared in a more health-conscious manner (refrained use of oil and spices, but still retaining the essential distinctive flavors of Korean dishes). Love the food and the people there! Tip: for busy working folks, the super generous portion here can aid into your meals during the week. Very much worth the trip to visit the place.

In the area for work, drove past this place and was like hmmm what is it? This place has no windows, so looked on yelp and low and behold it's a Korean restaurant. Now I gotta stop in, we stop in, place is empty. We walk to the side door and find Ahjumma, she greets us and we pick a table. She brings water and the menu, lots of options. We order, food comes out. I got egg drop soup, ooh my was it tasty. The main melas come out I get spicy squid buddies get bulgogi. Main meal is amazing. Yes decor is unique, having no windows was a bit odd. You owe it to your taste buds if you enjoying Korean food to stop in and eat here!!! gamsahabnida

I was skeptical when I first came across this restaurant. I walked in and I was the only person which is usually a sign to turn around and go. But i am extremely happy I took a leap of faith and stayed. The food was amazing! If you ever want some homemade Korean food this is a place you don't want to miss out on. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area. I got my food to go and I just mixed everything together in a big bowl!

OVERALL 4/5 Decent Korean food in a wacky environment and the option for karaoke make this one of the best places in the Charlottesville area. FOOD 3/5 Korean food is decent, not great. Stick with soups, pancakes and rice based dishes. Avoid the barbeque which just isn't up to par. I'm a big fan of the seafood pancake, I think it is the best thing on the menu. In deference to other yelper I have never tried the Chinese food here. DRINK 3/5 Beer, a selection of cheap wine and sake. Water and hot tea are complimentary. Why they don't have whiskey and soju is a mystery that I am afraid I will never solve. This is tolerable for dinner, but seriously impacts my ability to have fun at karaoke. AMBIENCE 5/5 Truly awesome. This is an old Korean couple who have a restaurant/karaoke place in the middle of nowhere, literally just on the side of highway 29, decorated with taxidermy. I get it, Charlottesville is in the South, but taxidermy?! Epic! Worth going just to witness this and take a picture next to your favorite stuffed forest creatures. The only issue is that it is way out there, a good 10 miles north of town. If you are going to drink and have a good time you need a DD or be prepared to shell out for a cab back. SERVICE 5/5 The old Korean lady who runs the place runs around, takes your orders and brings you your food. She is very sweet and polite. KARAOKE 4/5 Karaoke in Charlottesville is awesome in any form, so this wins high marks from me. There are two options, a private room and an option to sing in the main restaurant area. In either case the cost is $20 an hour for your party. There are song options in Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese and one or two other languages. When I went in Feb 2012 the song list was a bit dated.

O.G. Korean spot. It's a little out of the way but the home cooked meals are good. Be patient waiting for the food.

I would say in general the food is pretty high quality probably a 4-5/5 stars but the staffs friendly service definitely makes this a 5 star experience to dine here. Our server was personable and friendly and did an awesome job. The hosts were also very nice and someone else working I think likely the manager came to check on us as well and everyone was so so nice. We felt so welcomed. The service definitely takes it up a notch. The ambiance is modern and trendy and feels elevated. My partner noted how cute all of the utensils and bowls were lol. For the food we got the combination A for 2 which is basically just like the cheapest combo option for 2 people. We hadn't been before so we didn't feel the need to try something with more bells and whistles yet but likely would in the future. The combo A comes with 4 meats that are cooked one after another. You're served all your sides to start and the server can refill these while you eat. For two people, it is a LOOOTT of food. The banchans included broccoli (3/5) just kinda plain), pickled daikon (4/5), pickled collared greens (5/5), kimchi (2/5 - sorry, I like mine spicier!!), cucumber kimchi (4/5), pickled bean sprout (5/5) - and that's on top of the steamed rice, salad (5/5), egg soufflé (4/5), stew (5/5) and cheese corn (5/5). As you can tell, the majority of the sides were unbelievably delicious and well prepared. Each side is made in house and really only the broccoli felt kinda plain and even that had some sort of sesame oil on it. So none of the sides are just plain veggies you're getting fully seasoned carefully crafted food and LOTS of it. As for the meats, we thought they were quite good and went from our least favorite to our most. We started with the thinly sliced fatty beef brisket which, to be honest, was quite dry and a bit flavorless. It wasn't terrible but definitely was just kinda meh and needed the sauces they provided to elevate the flavor. This was maybe a 2-3/5. The next meat was the fatty pork belly. This was a 4/5. I don't LOVE pork belly as it is but to be honest this was seasoned and cooked quite well and I enjoyed it. The next two meats were totally amazing. The pork collar was my absolute favorite. Our server let us know that it can be a hard meat to cook and he did a fabulous job with it. Whatever the marinade was took it over the top and this came out perfectly tender, flavorful, and SUPER juicy! 10/5. I could eat this all day it was so good. The last meat was the spicy bulgogi and it was a 5/5. I loved it and my partner who is spice sensitive also liked it. A note on the spicy food - my partner cannot tolerate spice (yt man problems) and there were a number of things that did or could include spice. The only thing he couldn't eat because of spice issues was the spicy soy paste stew. Everything else (spicy bulgogi, kimchi, etc) was tolerable. So if you're worried about the spice level, don't be. The sauces provided were not spicy either. So, as far as the food went, we were very impressed. We also ordered drinks - I had pear juice which was kinda just 3/5. I didn't expect pulp so that's on me. My partner had the royal court cocktail. 5/5. This was pear with black tea and some spices and it was amazing! I couldn't keep eating it was so much food but my boyfriend didn't want to leave unless we tried dessert lol. So the server recommended the tiramisu and my boyfriend raised his eyebrows at me. This is one of my all time favorite desserts and so I am quite picky. The server said they make a Korean version with soy bean paste mochi and some other alterations. I was pretty skeptical because again I am super picky about traditional tiramisu as it is and I just in general don't love sweet stuff. This tiramisu I am not kidding it is a 10/5. This might be one of the best desserts I've ever had. I didn't really care for the mochi on top but the almond topping combined with the tiramisu was amazing. It has just the right amount of savory in the sweetness, the texture was perfect and the espresso flavor was nice and strong. Totally amazing. Our server told us that the servers who work here love it so much they had to be banned from buying it on their shifts because they would run out so often and I see why! I will dream about this dessert for many days to come... For two people with the combo drinks and dessert it came to about $150ish with taxes and tip. Totally worth it imo. It's definitely a nicer night out at the price point but you will not be disappointed. I am SO excited for the next time we come back! Thank you Bulpan for your awesome food and service - we are looking forward to forward to dining with you again. 감사합니다!

We came around 7:30 and they close at 8:30 during the week, so they delivered our food super fast, hardly had to wait. The restaurant is super cute inside, we got sat at a cozy booth near the door and it was lovely. The only reason I subtracted one star is because our server was kind, just not attentive at all. He took our order and then disappeared. I understand it was close to closing and he was probably ready to go, but he didn't even ask if everything came out okay or if we needed anything. It also came with a Sriracha sauce packet and a small container of chili oil along with the normal variety of noodles, sprouts, fresh herbs, green onions, white onions, jalapeño slices, and a lime wedge. The chicken was tender sliced white meat with no fat, gristle, or bones attached. The broth had a lot of flavor and was delicious. - I also had the shrimp and chive dumplings ($7.00). Not a strong shrimp flavor, but they had a nice crisp on the outside and were tasty. The sauce that comes with the dumplings is absolutely delicious. - My wife had the Bulgogi beef ($14.50). She said it was tender and very delicious. It came with rice, kimchi, and cucumber salad. I just happened to speak to Linh about the cucumber salad and she said this is how she's always made it for her kids and they love it. Well, I'm with her kids and love it too. She makes the vinaigrette herself and it has an unexpected sweetness to it instead of the usual strong vinegar flavor. We both loved it. - We had the pork gyoza ($7.00). This was cooked my favorite way, deep fried (not pan fried). This took me back to the gyoza in Japan and the Yaki Mandu I used to get in Korea. Great crispy wrapper with a tender flavorful filling. And again, the sauce that came with it is some of the best I've had. - The kimchi is not overly spicy and has a slight sweetness to it. - The Egg Tarts ($5.50) are good, not overly sweet. Could use a bit more filling for a better filling to pie crust ratio. - I also got a Chai tea bubble milk ($6.25) that was super delicious. Overall, we really enjoyed Nguyen's Kitchen and will go back with friends. It's unfortunate that it sits behind a Taco Bell and is not highly noticeable from the road, otherwise I might have tried it sooner.
