I wanted to provide an update to tell you how Bam Bam goes above and beyond and really treats you like family. A couple of months ago, my husband injured himself at a trampoline park at our niece's birthday party. We were able to easily put our membership on hold. I wasn't injured but they know that my husband and I are a dynamic duo so they allowed me to hold mine too. Not only were they flexible, but they took the time to send my husband a care package of his favorite Tiff Treats cookies!!! Their online special said "Fill out the form below to get two weeks of classes plus a free uniform". The first class was supposed to be a 20 min intro class. But we were told to just join the regular 45 min class as no instructor was available. I asked if we would get a uniform as I saw everyone was wearing them. They said free uniforms were for people who buy a membership. I said that's fine, but noted their ad was confusing as it didn't say that. They said they'd ask if we could get one since at the next class my kid would get a white belt which is to be worn with a uniform. On Day 2 I was told that the owner wanted to talk to us. Scott asked if our kid liked the class. I said she was on the fence after the first class. He gave me some papers on the character building aspect of the school where kids can earn stripes (colored tape) on their belt by doing certain tasks at home like saying thank you, eating healthy, etc. He didn't push us to sign up and said if our kid didn't like the class yet there's no point in discussing the program. I was impressed by that. After class they gave us a uniform. It's just a plain generic Gi not branded like most of the kids had. And it looked like thinner material too. But we didn't care. It was nice of them to give one. Day 3 was fine. The classes are crowded. There's no warm up other than a few pushups. I think maybe because there's no space. The kids are divided into younger (looks like under 6 or so) and older kid, with 2-3 instructors for each group. Adults in their family program join the older kids. The instructors show certain moves and then everyone finds a partner to practice those moves. Maybe 3-4 moves per class. They recycled the same moves during our 4 days there. On Fri/Sat they do dodge ball I heard. There's 3 classes for beginners/families running consecutively at 4 pm M-F except T/Th when the 6-7 pm class is for blackbelts only. On Sat there' a class at 9 and 10 am. On Day 4 I was called the Scott's office again. Scott's wife (Brandi?) was there and asked if our kid liked the class. I told her she liked interacting with a couple of the kids she sparred with but didn't seem very interested in the grappling. She informed us that during the free trial we are limited to 2 classes per week. She noted that we had exceeded our limit for the week. She said it in a bit of a standoffish way. I told her fine but I had not seen that written anywhere. I said we were just trying to come as often as possible to get a feel for the program especially since my kid was on the fence about it. Actually their front desk had booked our Day 3. And I noted that every day I was getting emails encouraging me to book a class (the emails said "classes are booking up FAST" and "these classes book up extremely fast, so to be sure that you get the class that fits your schedule, BOOK NOW"). I said I had already signed up for another two classes to finish the week, but that I would cancel them. She said those emails were just automated. She talked about the self-defense benefits of jiujitsu and said it's important to learn defense techniques before something bad happens. She highlighted their program's character development aspect and said the kids love it. We talked some more about other things and she seemed to warm up from the start of our discussion. She said that since our daughter was uncertain and we had already booked the next class online it was ok to keep it. She gave me a couple of task sheets to earn stripes and suggested we encourage our kid to do some to get the full experience. I asked her about pricing and membership details. Pricing seemed secretive as I could only take a photo of the prices that she wrote down. There's only 1 program that costs about $4,000 for a year per kid. Supposedly you can go as often as you want, but Brandi said a few times that 2x/week is standard. The paper she showed me also said 2x/week week is standard. It made me wonder whether they'd pressure us to attend less if we went more frequently than 2x/week. There's an $800 discount by paying in full. I saw on the paper that a family package is free if you buy two memberships. Also, if you're out more than a week you can tell them and they'll carry over missed days to the end of your year. You can cancel the membership for either a medical reason signed by doctor or if you move a certain distance. You can request a guarantee where you can cancel after the kid gets their first belt upgrade (after 16 classes) if the kid still doesn't like the program. Brandi said that's rare as kids love the school and they've been going strong for 15 years. My kid got her first stripe that day and was really excited. She's 8. She wanted to do some of the tasks on the takehome sheet to get more. When I got home I talked with my wife. We decided to cancel the 2 remaining days I already booked out of respect for the trial limit and as we'd already been 4x total we decided not to return the second week either. read more

Despite their name, Bam Bam Martial Arts is more than just about teaching martial arts. Honestly this was something I didn't fully appreciate before signing my 5 year old son up, but they are teaching the kids to be great people and confident and influential leaders. Before signing up, I figured this would be something my son should to do to get out of the house and hey if he learns how to defend himself as well, well then that's great too. It's only been 8 months but I have to say Prof Scott's program and his staff (many of which are made of up his wife Brandi and 8(!!!) kids) gets incredible results. My son's attitude has improved greatly, he's more polite and he's even eating green vegetables, which he wouldn't eat before. On a side note - they have also gone to great lengths to ensure that their program can continue despite the current COVID-19 crisis. They have regular Zoom classes which work great for me, especially since my 3 year old son can also get involved. The coaches noticed his hard work and even sent him an honorary gi so he could fit in with his brother! Again, another way this school is incredible and I can't say enough good things about them. Interestingly, now that my younger son is also in the program, the behavioral improvements we saw in our older son are rubbing off on our younger son as well! We love the Bam Bam family! Our 10 year old daughter wanted to try martial arts about 6 months ago and she has been completely hooked ever since. Bam Bam and all of the Sullivan family has been very helpful, welcoming and just awesome. As a parent (before Corona) I enjoy hangout in the audience area during classes and due to the holistic curriculum my husband and I feel that we now have an extra co-parent. Theme like self discipline, obedience, respectful talk, goal setting etc, is all valuable learning for any kid. Our daughter attended Bam-Bam earlier this year and really enjoyed the experience (why its 2 stars). Our issue was with management making it impossible for us to quit and then charging us after we quit without our permission. Some context: Our daughter is happy. Covid happens. Life changes. We try to support this small business for 3mo despite not attending. Then - like with many other things - we realize this covid thing is going to last for a while. So we tried to cancel originally in June. They begged us to stay on for another month and try online. Hard with Ju Jitsu but we tried. Our daughter just wasn't into it. So we tried cancelling in July. We were told that we had to do a zoom with Prof Scott. We did the Zoom and asked to cancel. They didn't cancel. We called but couldn't get through. We emailed again and said definitively to cancel. We were told we needed to have another call. We emailed them times to call us but they never did. Instead, Bam-Bam didn't bill us for the month of August (so we thought we were cancelled) but then restarted billing in Sept, October, and November. I understand things are tough during a pandemic, but it's not right to try and make people jump through hoops to cancel -- and to charge them for a service you know they aren't using. We would give 4-5 stars for our daughter's in person experience and 0 stars for how management handled our cancellation which averages to 2.25 stars. read more

I tried few martial art gyms before I signed up with Bam Bam, I like working out and practicing kickboxing here. The family-owned business style makes it really a very unique gym. They attend to all our needs and answer our questions. Coach Manny is very professional but also makes the whole training so enjoyable and fun. He knows exactly how to make you fall in love with the sport. I started as a first timer, and within 3 months I made a real good progress, thanks to his coaching methods and attention to his students. I have been attending Bam Bam's Muay Thai classes since March. The training is intense, professional, and fun. Egos are checked at the door, and familiar faces become friends and training partners soon. However what sticks out in this gym than any other gym I have attended in the past 13 years is the great attempts by coach Angelus to build a community (in every sense), from organizing family events, and evangelizing support for other gyms, even asking everyone to come together for a movie or support another fighter during his fight. Came in on a whim as I was just visiting from California and looking to get on a mat, get a good sweat, and do some drilling that focused on technique as well. Jeremey was the teacher and he was great! I went to Bam Bam to get back into shape after having back surgery. I had been out of the gym a while and was restricted from weights. I found Bam Bam from a friend who had been attending for a while. I decided to check them out. I was blow away on how welcoming and nice everyone is. My son (8 years old) has been at Bam Bam MMA for almost two years. My first impression of the gym was that it was immaculate and had a professional appearance. My son loved it from day one and I am ecstatic over how well he has done and how far his skills have improved. Beyond just jiu jitsu, he has learned about respect, discipline and basic manners. I consider these to be life skills that he will carry with him into adulthood. I wanted a school where the coaches have actually tested their skills at the professional level and were well versed in the arts they were teaching my son. I was very impressed with the pedigrees of the coaches at Bam Bam. We have coaches that have competed in professional kickboxing, UFC, boxing, muy thai, and jiu jitsu. Why wouldn't you want your child to learn from coaches who have been there, done that in real life? There are too many schools and coaches out there just trying to sign up kids and adults for $$$ but have never even tested their art competitively. If you are looking for a jiu jitsu or muy thai gym where the bar is set low and your child can go up in belt rankings in a matter of weeks, this is probably not the place for you. They hold the students to high standards and make them work for their belts not only at the gym, but in school and at home. A quality that is not readily found in today's society. My son knows that when he earns a stripe/belt, he should be proud of himself and that his hard work has paid off. It helps him work even harder and stay disciplined in everything he does such as school work, being respectful at home, and overall being a good person to others. All the coaches (Scott, Justin, Heman, Franco) are professional and excellent with kids. They teach the skills that are needed, command respect, and put their heart and souls into each student. Coach Justin has a phenomenal rapport with his students. He has taken extra time with my son to ensure his techniques are correct and does it in a supportive and caring way. If a student has a question it will always get answered whether it be about a certain technique or something personal going on outside of the gym. I have trained at Bam Bam's for about 2 and a half years now and this is by far one of the best places to train in Houston! There are many reasons why. Here are a few: The Coaches - I just can't say enough about Angelus. He is the manager/lead instructor of BBMA and does an outstanding job challenging and pushing you farther than you could have ever imagined you could go. Everyone that steps into the gym is struggling with their own fear and/or doubts and Angelus give you the skills, technique, and confidence you need to break through those walls. He focuses on basics as well as more advanced techniques and breaks them down in a way that even someone on their 1st day could understand. Angelus is also always looking for ways to give his students cool opportunities as well. For example, he has brought in top level guest instructors (ie. We had a fighter from the TUF show come by one time) to show us new techniques. He has built great relationships with other gyms around Houston giving us more training partners (etc.) so that we can become more skilled. He has a great tap on all current events and competitions around the Houston area, giving us more opportunities to challenge and better ourselves. Angelus has also done an incredible job creating a "team Bam Bam" atmosphere. You truly feel like you are learning and training with family. He is a GREAT COACH! Rob and Connor are also incredible coaches! They are both very personable and want to push you. They both explain and articulate technique very clearly! I have learned so much from them. Facilities: Always clean and plenty of spare equipment to use if you forget yours at home for some reason. (Except for mouthpieces, and cups... but please don't be THAT GUY.) Class Schedule: There are plenty to choose from if you have a busy schedule. Just check out their website! Training: No matter what your fitness level is, you will be drenched after every class. I've trained for Spartan Races, Tough Mudders for years and this is by far some of the hardest, intense, and most rewarding training I have ever done. But don't freak... if you are beginner you will not be thrown into the "lion's den" right off the bat. The coaches want to make sure you get a good grasp on basics before you start sparring etc.. I have some of the best sparring partners at BBMA. We are always there to help each other learn and never to injure each other (Although it happens). No muscle heads here. I tried out a kickboxing class here and was really impressed by the atmosphere of the studio and the professionalism of the staff. I set up a trial class with Scott (the owner I think?) who was super nice about answering my many classes. My first class was about 8 people, 1/3 of us were first-timers and the rest of the class were returning students. We had Coach Angelus as our instructor and like all the other reviews say he is excellent teacher with charisma, during class he demonstrated techniques in a precise, easy to understand manner and also gave pertinent background information about mma in general to help us understand it as an artform. To give you a sense of how the class went, after it ended all of the first-timers went with him to discuss signing up for a membership and almost all of us ended signing up with the gym with the exception of one girl (who during a conversation later since we had partnered during class mentioned that the price of membership was the only deterrent as she was student). Facility-wise this place is smaller than the other gyms I've visited but everything is clean, orderly, and in good addition and you don't lack for anything. One other thing is watch out for is parking, this place is in a shopping plaza that has many other businesses (including a ballet studio and fencing studio) so finding a parking space can be difficult so make sure you leave enough time for that before class! read more

I visited the Bam Bam Martial Arts facility a few weeks ago for the very first time and can honestly say from my own personal experience the staff and coaches were extremely nice, very knowledgeable and made you feel welcomed and part of their martial arts family! I had the opportunity to observe Coach HeMan teaching the kids class, which was very impressive and quite entertaining to see these kids in action. Coach HeMan even had a little fan on the sidelines that day his 16-month old son, whom was following along doing all the training "on the sideline" put me to shame that's for sure and just melted your heart to see this baby following the big kids class absolutely adorable!!!! Also stayed to observe Coach Manny's kickboxing class, which was phenomenal no matter what your skill level is if you pay attention during class, you will learn not just kickboxing but the "proper techniques" and implementation of true kickboxing from a pro! I wouldn't judge someone by the way they tie a belt, such a mediocre comment! At the end of the day, I think you need to experience the facility, classes and see all the great coaches in action to form your own opinion. You don't have to believe me just go and experience this Martial Arts Family oriented facility and form your own opinion, then you can really see what this facility is all about and you will not want to leave!!!! read more

We got a free month to try out bam bam. We were really excited because we had already been making plans to put our 4 yr old in jiu jitsu so it was perfect timing. The first day was an introduction and we really liked it and left satisfied. Only thing we didn't like was how crowded it was upon arriving, literally not even being able to walk in and shoes all over the floor. The second class was good and we felt very happy with the guidance our son was getting. During this class, the owner asked to speak to us. He said that he could give us a "deal" for signing up right then and there and that the offer would only stand for that moment. It was very pricey even with this "deal" and regardless we were not able to pay anything at all THAT day. We told him that we weren't able to pay anything yet and would like to continue the free month and during that time we would make a decision. The next day we came back for now his third class and the instructors didn't help our son AT ALL. They were doing moves and playing games without explaining a single thing to him. Twice it was our sons turn to do something and at that moment the instructors stopped and skipped his turn. We were furious. Why give a free month if you're going to be upset that we aren't ready to pay? The point of giving free classes is to let parents and child try out the classes and make a decision when they are ready. If you're not going to properly guide my child, skip his turns, why on earth would that make us want to choose this place??? The owners have really kind, smart children but would also have them handle things that they weren't capable of handling. During that third class one of the instructors said she needed more assistance so they had their youngest son who can't be more than 7 or 8 "helping" 4-5 yr olds. While this isn't crazy, the child was having trouble paying attention himself, how can he help my kid who is in his first jiu jitsu classes? Over all, very upset with how our son was treated and is it coincidence that it all changed when we weren't ready to pay? My advice, because they were kind people, is they need to organize their walking in area- more places for shoes, not allowing people to just take off their shoes in the middle of the walkway when it's already a tight space. Don't give out free MONTH classes if that isn't something that works for your business. While it's nice to give your kids responsibility- I wouldn't suggest them taking care of first time jiu jitsu kids. And lastly, it never feels good to come in with free classes but feel very pressured to pay anything at all. read more

I was unsure about this place since I bought a dirt-cheap Groupon, but within one class I was sold. Coach Angeles is an incredible teacher, very patient yet will push you to be better. He is very invested in your growth and is always encouraging students to compete in the next tournament as well as helping them along the way. The place also has a great community. Everyone is very respectful and friendly, higher belts helping show the moves to the lower belts. The kinda place that if you have a problem sparring (and getting beaten by) a girl, I wouldn't bother showing up. read more

I have been going here for Muay Thai for about 1.5 years total. I signed up a couple years ago for the 6 month membership and had to stop (unfortunately) because of financial problems. I've been signed up again for about a year and am so glad I came back. I really missed it when I wasn't able to go. It's a little expensive but I think it is well worth it. Each instructor has their way of teaching, so going on different days is good for a variation of techniques. It is so much fun and I always feel really good after going. It is a really great and intense workout and you learn a lot about defense and striking. I feel strong and confident... Like a woman should! The reason I am wiritng this review is because I am very grateful for them to be considerate and accomodating to my needs. I had to put my account on hold for a few months and switch around my membership dues and they didn't give me any hassle. I never go online and write reviews about places but I just feel grateful that these people are nice and we are in turn helping each other out. Instructors make sure that everyone is comfortable, all questions are answered and no one is left behind. This is a great school for jujitsu, Muay Thai, and the kids classes. After having been here for around 6 months, I feel qualified to comment. I have trained at quite a few other places and this ranks up amongst the best of all of them. Two things really stand out here at bam bam: Coach Angelus who is a patient and skilled teacher and motivator, and the great group of students who show up on a regular basis, support each other and train together without ego or any trying to hurt each other day after day.
