What an amazing place. Location: nice second floor location in a good part of town. Cleanliness: Very very clean, with a great area for watching students without getting in the way. I liked that there was glass between. The viewing and the mat areas, so I could take a call or talk with others without disturbing the people practicing. Brazil-021 has been one of the greatest things that has happen to my son. I decide to try out jiu jitsu for for him first and shortly after starting jiu jitsu he joined Muay Thai. We had been having trouble at school so I decided that having some sort of disciple would help him out. And it definitely has helped he is always so excited to go train that he sees it as a reward. And even when we are still having trouble with him at home or school the coaches are always happy to step in and talk to him and help him in anyway possible. My son attends the classes and he loves it! He cant wait to go every week. He is 6 years old and this is helping him so much - physically and socially. I've been to a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms. A lot - from Orange County, to Brazil, to New York, to Fargo North Dakota. I stopped by BRAZIL-021 (021 is the Rio de Janeiro area code) while I was in town for business. BRAZIL-021 is a BJJ gym that does EVERYTHING right. What do I mean? They pay attention to all the little things that make for a great gym experience. ATTENTION TO CLEANLINESS - This is super important in gyms. It makes people feel comfortable and keeps people from getting sick. The thing about cleanliness is that the responsibility goes beyond just the management to the class as a whole. Beyond a meticulously clean facility, the other students looked out to make sure I knew where I should and should not step, where to place my shoes, etc. It was clear they have been explicitly trained to care about cleanliness. This is good for everyone. ATTENTION TO SAFETY - in a very professional way, BRAZIL-021 collected my info and had me sign a waiver before class. This is standard at any gym. I was surprised at the start of class when Marcos (the head instructor) asked me a question about some of the information I put down (related to a previous surgery of mine). In most gyms, waivers are just signed and forgotten. I appreciated Marcos' attention to any special needs I might have. Marcos also insisted on rolling with me before I rolled with any of his students. It showed his concern for their safety - he didn't know me and by rolling with me he made sure I wasn't some unsafe spaz or ego-case before mixing me in with his other students. ATTENTION TO CULTURE - The attitudes of the other students were immediately apparent as they entered the class. They are there to train, to learn and to grow. This is not some meathead fight-club gym, or some place where the students just want to socialize and pretend they are training. Brazil-021 has a wonderfully dedicated and supportive culture. ATTENTION TO EDUCATION - Marcos is clearly a gifted teacher. I was impressed by his ability to watch the whole class and provide individual instruction related to specific movements. I look forward to learning more from him in the future. Did you have fun? Did you learn something? Did you get a good workout? These are my three criteria for evaluating the success of a jiu jitsu training session. Brazil-021 satisfied all three of those completely. Five Stars. Brazil-021 is more than a gym or a discipline: Professor Marcos has elevated this establishment to the level of family. Regardless of experience level, size , or age, everyone is welcomed and met with such affection. In addition to being experts in their field, they are experts at breaking the moves down so even a novice can follow easily. My four year old has recently joined and I couldn't be more thrilled. I was looking for a sport that would give him confidence and work off some excess energy. For the past 3 years, we frequented the Little Gym, but I felt he needed more. This gym has surpassed all my expectations. The instructors take time to work with son, making sure he knows the proper technique and giving him positive encouragement. So as the nature of my work, I am always in some new town, city, and state. In the end of September/beginning of October it was no different, I was in the Houston, TX area for work. I looked up the closest BJJ school to my hotel and came across Brazil-021. I could honestly say hands down this is one of the best BJJ schools I've ever visited in the USA. 1) Professor Marcos is one of the friendliest instructors I have ever met. Even though I was a visitor, he made me feel welcome and a part of the school immediately. 2) The techniques that were taught were top notch and the way they were taught were top notch as well. Professor Marcos would show the techniques and show them in fine detail. If there were any questions from the students, he would address them to the whole class just so everyone was in the loop. The way he conducted the class was engaging and showed equal attention to everyone from white belt student to brown belt student. 3) The facility is clean! The mats, the gis people were wearing, and the bathroom. Everything in this facility was clean and proper. This might not seem like a big deal, but it is to me. Trust me, I'm allergic to everything under the sun so this was a God send. 4) The atmosphere from the other students were welcoming and friendly. Literally I had an upper belt take me under his wing for the day and went over the techniques shown just to make sure I understood them properly. Also, the general feel I got from everyone there was that they love Jiu-Jitsu and have a desire to learn with no egos and no animosity. They are also some of the most skilled I've come across as well. The focus on technique first and foremost is evident in this school. So in conclusion, if you are a native to Houston, a person who recently moved to Houston, a visitor who is in town for one reason or another who has a liking to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, do yourself a favor and stop by Brazil-021, you won't regret it. What's a great place! I travel a lot and always try and train at different schools. When I called the school the staff was super friendly and provided the info I request. When I walked in the staff remember my name from the call which really impressed me. The school is every well designed and very organized and super clean. Everyone came up to me and greeted me and showed me great respect at the school. I felt like I was training at home and felt like I was part of the family. Professor Marcos is very nice and I really enjoy his class and also his Philosophy of jujitsu and how he shares that with his students. You can see and feel his passion when he teaches his class. Been in the school for more than a year and I have nothing but good things from the school my fellow students and profesor Marcos Cequeira . Very knowledgeable person on what he do , he has patients and a lot of respect for each one of his students. I found a great family there even tho I have a bad shoulder injure profesor Marcos take good care on his students and look after all of us when we get hurt. Been coming here for about 9 months and I can really say this place has change the way I understand how, what my body can move and do . As a petite woman, it is always good to know a little about self defense or in the event of unwelcome confrontation. Prof Marcos takes time to explain when I have question and is very respectful. I feel the same way with people I train with at the mat as well. During this time of pandemic, this academy is taking every safety precautions before, during and after the class. Sydney, the office manager will take your body temperature, sanitize your hands, then she assigns you to a marked 6ft x 6ft personal square with 6ft apart from another personal square. You will train by yourself in the square. After the session, you will leave the mat one person at a time for proper social distancing and they sanitize your hands again. They sanitize the mat after each session. They let you try it for free for a week before making your decision. I highly recommend this BJJ! read more

I came to Houston to visit family for the holidays and was looking for a place to drop in and train for a few days. This place is fantastic and very welcoming. I'm a meager white belt but despite the club having many advanced students- they were more than welcoming. They even invited me to stay for the advanced classes which I had no business participating in haha. Professor Marcos is a great black belt and keeps the place incredibly clean. My wife and I did a cross country road trip and I made a point of training at various gyms along the way. During the trip I trained with some of the biggest champions in the sport and stopped at Brazil021 as one of my final stops before competing at the San Antonio Open. Marcos was there teaching on his birthday, which shows his dedication, and immediately welcomed me like I was family. All of his students were very welcoming and he adjusted the advanced class to help me prep for the tournament which was really cool of him. We rolled a few times and his technique is top notch. I also got to roll with one of his competitive brown belts who had great technique and heart and a very flexible purple belt with a great guard. It was excellent training. A few days later I went on to win the black belt ultra heavy division in San Antonio and training at Brazil021 helped my preparation tremendously. Looks like this place has been overwhelmed and can't handle the number of students anymore. We're here for our kids and it seems like it was more for that though the amount of instruction they get seems to favor the lower belts so if you're a higher belt, don't expect to get much attention. And as an adult, I tried out the class and though some of the other students knew how to hold back on their experience to avoid injury, there were some that were out to get you and it was no longer about training but win at any cost which is dangerous and has lead to injury as well. Unfortunately, my kids like the other kids, but the instruction and safety of the classes are very questionable. And careful with those contracts. They're like gym memberships, but Tons more expensive. And, of course, the outfit buy ins and having to get it from them. At the end of the day, I agree with a previous poster, that it's a business, pure and simple. If you buy into it, well, they're just really good car sales men of a bunch of lemons. read more
