Busted-up old ghost town on the western edge of Death Valley, whose main attractions are Charles Manson's old truck, and Charles Manson's (alleged) signature carved into the jailhouse wall. (The Manson Family used to hide out at nearby Barker Ranch, in the mountains above the town.) As far as a ghost town, it's not that impressive -- there are ruins of 3 buildings, plus a bunch of rusty old junk. As far as a campground, it's just a barren desert with a few shade structures, fire rings and one Port-a-Potty (maybe). No water, no trees -- but at $3, what do you want?! As far as the "General Store" goes, it's basically just soda and water in a cooler inside a very charismatic old converted service station, the walls of which are coated in dust and anti-government rhetoric. The guy who runs the place (Rock) is super friendly and colorful, and you will enjoy talking to him...as well as any other locals who happen to be around. If you roll in after dark, just go into the store (the door is always open) and put $3 in the coffee can provided for that purpose....then drive out to the flat area and set up camp. Then in the morning, you can hang out on the porch of the Store and watch the burros romp about the sagebrush. There's even an out-of-tune piano on deck for impromptu hoe-downs. In other words.....FABULOUS! I have been here several times, and will DEFINITELY be back -- their Freedom Days campout on Easter weekend is not to missed.

If you are attending Gem-O-Rama in Trona California this is the place to stay. Most people do,…read moreusually you'll be amongst several hundred other campers. Located about 5 miles north along 178 this wee campground is dry desolate and parched. But it's the desert!!!!! For only $5 we were able to pitch our tent anywhere in the overflow parking lot. We arrived at night, around 8:30pm and a super friendly and nice sheriff something (I couldn't really read the patch well) chatted with us and registered our vehicle. After setting up our tent, we went in search of the bathrooms, and noticed that they have a swing set, an empty area where once a pool was, there are restrooms and portable toilets, fresh water at 3 faucets, an outdoor shower to wash the salt and mud off after field trips, and a trash receptacle. There are also tennis courts where some other camper had set up a projector showing Alvin and the Chipmunks. Kids were running around playing soccer under the fluorescent street lamps but everyone seemed to quiet down around 10pm (which is the quiet time) and I was able to hear coyotes nearby. It got really cold at night, so I recommend bringing extra blankets and dressing warmly. There are only barrel fires allowed here, no ground fires and sadly we didn't have time nor a barrel to have a fire. Literally we walked around for a little while, marveled at the stars and then went to bed having to be up at 6AM to get in line for pancakes and register for our field trip back in town. What I liked about this site, is that they let you set up where you wanted. We were able to find a place as far away from the 100 or so boy scouts as we could. I probably wouldn't camp here under any other circumstances than for Gem-O-Rama. http://www.yelp.com/biz/gem-o-rama-searles-valley But it's perfect for this event!

But it was stocked with toilet paper. Other than that the campgrounds was great. I love the fact the market is reasonably priced. They have a Cafe, showers, cleaner restrooms, and a laundry facility. The campsite was beautiful. Not too many bugs. Everywhere you looked it was beautiful. There's lots of campsites nearby but not too close. Our campsite was 202, right behind the large rock and pretty close to the river. It was nice hearing the rush of water throughout the day. The bathroom was close enough except for during the the night. Knowing that bears are in the area made it really scary going in the middle of the night. Wear a headlamp, it's much better than a flashlight. The shuttle will come inside the campgrounds and pick you up near the restrooms in the main parking lot. There are a few trails for hiking (which we didn't have time to do). I do recommend if traveling with another family to work out the food situation because there's only one bear box per site. One large cooler can fir or two smaller ones. One large and one small cooler will not fit in the box. ALL food, snack, even perfume, & body spry should be put into the bear box.

The creek that flows through the campground is ice-cold, and makes for a beautiful hike (My husband even caught a small trout)! The bathrooms were kept relatively clean for pit toilets, and clean water is provided from a spigot (to rinse dirty dishes, or kids!). There is a super convenient little general store in Camp Nelson, which is the closest town. Just a beautiful place, with Sequoias sprinkled throughout! You will wake up every morning, glad you're there. The camp host (I believe his name is Dan), was super chill and very helpful when we asked about local sights, and hikes. The only con right now is the fire restriction in effect for the whole area, so that means NO campfires (I got a Campfire Permit beforehand, which is required, but was not inspected). It's a very shady campground during the day, and it gets pretty chilly at night, not to mention very dark. Just make sure you have a propane stove/grill/firepit, and some lanterns/headlamps/flashlights you'll be good to go! *Trail of 100 Giants is a must see, though it's a 22 mile winding drive from the campground*
