I was staying in Newport Beach and needed some extra sunscreen - enter Balboa Pharmacy. I was walking around exploring the area and noticed this place on one of the corners - seemed like divine intervention, so I went in to check it out. The pharmacy has most of what one would expect at an indie. There was a selection of OTC meds, sundries, toys, as well as some souvenirs. I was able to quickly find what I needed - the whole experience was seamless and I was out the door before I knew it. Staff was friendly - while they don't have a super large selection, it seems like a good place to get something in a pinch. It's also nice to see a neighborhood pharmacy so embedded in their community - in these days of slashing reimbursements, independent pharmacies are becoming a rare commodity. Worth a stop in if you're in the area. read more

Love this store! Great vibes, beautiful stuff, wonderful people!! Super they keep this shop the way they do.

This Pharmacy goes above and beyond for my patients. Many of my families use them and have raved over the care and attention. In addition the the pharmacist gets the medication as soon as possible, but she will also ship it the same day. Or next day! read more

Love supporting a local business that isn't a chain! I've walked by here probably hundreds of times but never actually went in until this past week when I was in dire need of sunscreen with this ridiculous heatwave we've been having. I appreciate the fact that the prices for everything are fairly reasonable -- I think we were out around $35 for a hat, sunscreen (Sun Bum), water and candy. Love the historical exterior of the building! 2022: 99/100 read more

This is a very nostalgic pharmacy reminiscent of my childhood IF I actually grew up (like I ever will, hopefully not!!) in OC but I didn't. Wait, that sounds like an oxymoron! I didn't grow up here but I appreciate this old fashioned drug store and it is SO cute and quaint! The guy working here today looks like a surfer dude from the 70s!! read more

Someone is always gets unexpectedly sick or hurt in some fashion when we travel around California. This time we just needed to pick up cough drops for a sore throat. Cashier assisted us and we found what we needed. Location is perfect. There are several whale watching boats stationed at the landing and they sell sun tan location, sea sickness pills, snacks, just to name a few. - Place is pretty cluttered inside, there's a bit of everything including souvenir items. - Old ladies that work here do seem to watch everyone like a hawk.. read more

I love the Balboa Pharmacy as it embodies everything that pharmacies used to provide to their community. They always take the time to answer any questions and offer prompt caring service. Suzanne the Pharmacist, who is amazing, fills the prescriptions and is always available to answer any questions or concerns. The pharmacy and the entire store are reminiscent of old time drug stores offering a little bit of everything from medicines, beach going needs, seasonal items, etc. Everyone should drop by and enjoy a truly amazing store. read more

I probably pass 20 other pharmacies on my drive down here, but there's none that match the hospitality and kindness of the staff at Balboa!

My friend and I were going parasailing, but we ran out of water as were drove here from LA. So our first stop was this pharmacy. This place has an interesting exterior. It has an old-school sign, probably dating back to the 50's. Inside was a bunch of miscellaneous merchandise that you'd see at any old pharmacy/convenience store. We didn't stay long to check out everything, we grabbed two water bottles, paid, and left. The store clerk was nice, and the place was clean and well kept. There was not really much foot traffic, but it was still early in the day. This is a small and nice stop in Newport. read more

We are on vacation visiting from Utah, and my poor kids had rashes from swimming at the beach. We searched pharmacies all over Newport and Costa Mesa for Calmoseptine with no luck. We decided to visit Balboa island and beach and came across Balboa Pharmacy. They saved us and had Calmoseptine! I have happy kids and feel so grateful! They were very friendly and super helpful. Would definitely recommend stopping there for your pharmaceutical needs!! read more

I was biking with a couple of friends down the Newport Balboa Bike trail when one of my friends ended up with a bad tumble and had a wide, 1 cm piece of his calf carved out. I had bandaids, but no other first aid, so I searched for anything I could find nearby. I rode only two blocks away when I came upon Balboa Pharmacy. The owner was incredibly helpful in pointing me to the first aid section and was great at explaining that I would need hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic cream to treat the wound. She even gave me a few napkins to help stop the bleeding! Overall, I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time and my experience with Balboa Pharmacy could not have been any better :) read more

My family's been going to the Balboa pharmacy since it first opened. My parents have all the prescriptions filled there, and we know everybody by their first name. I can't say enough amazing things about this pharmacy. Suzanne and Kim are absolutely fantastic. They always go the extra mile for you and couldn't be kinder and more helpful. Getting sick and needing antibiotics on vacation is NOT fun but I have to give a huge thank you to the pharmacist Suzanne for making the process so easy! She went above and beyond by calling to let me know my insurance wouldn't cover a prescription and helping me by contacting the physician to have them write one that would be more affordable. She made sure my prescription was filled before closing. This is the type of service I wish I could get back at home! read more

I arrived in Newport in May for the summer with bad allergies. I had already been taking a mixture of allergy medicine with no end in sight. After speaking to the pharmacist, who is friendly, kind an amazing, she offered her suggestion of a mixture of other allergy medicine. Kim is absolutely fantastic I went in needing a thank you note and because they were remodeling, they happen to be all out of them however, she told me that she had a personal thank you note in her car that she would give me. She then proceeded to get her very own card and give it to me so I would have a thank you note. She also did not charge me for the card because they were all out. This is the kind of service I imagine every employer hopes to have in their employees. I highly recommend going to Balboa pharmacy! When you're there, ask for Kim :-) read more

I have been using Balboa Pharmacy for over 2 years and feel like part of the family down there! Mike runs his locally-owned pharmacy like a well-oiled machine and Tom (among others), works long hours up front servicing locals and tourists alike with genuine kindness and professionalism. I have been a customer of Balboa Pharmacy for many years. I met the new Pharmacist Suzanne a few years ago and the level of detail she provided in my first interaction shocked me. I asked her who she was because I had never seen her. She was friendly and knowledgable. I switched all our prescriptions over. I have even had debates in doctors offices when I specifically requested my prescriptions go to to Balboa Pharmacy. A few of my doctors offices have relationships with mail in pharmacies and they try and convince their patients it is less expensive. I have found this to be untrue. Doctors do not know individual co pays and their personal costs and should not be able to persuade customers on pharmacy choice. I can call or text Suzanne any time even after hours and she responds immediately and I have never ever felt like I was a bother. I will not go to a chain ever again unless Suzanne is no longer at Balboa. She even will bring my prescription to my car! Having Suzanne is a reflection of our community high class with high class service. read more

This place is a rip off, avoid at all costs and use one of the other many nearby shops. Everything is over priced and they're even stingy enough to try to sell AA batteries individually for a significant up charge. read more

Very convenient pharmacy for locals. Pharmacist is very knowledgeable and friendly. Goes out of his way for our family every time. They stock some basic staples and the rest of the storefront caters to tourists. Old building. Nothing fancy, but Balboa icon. read more

The place smells like an old dusty building that was never remodeled since the 1900's (which is when it was built). The 2 older ladies are very rude and disrespectful and had a nasty attitude towards me for wanting to look at their probiotic section. The prices are overpriced and the probiotic i looked at was expired. Unless you want an expired product I suggest you avoid this horrible dusty place and go somewhere else. read more
