I was staying in Newport Beach and needed some extra sunscreen - enter Balboa Pharmacy. I was walking around exploring the area and noticed this place on one of the corners - seemed like divine intervention, so I went in to check it out. The pharmacy has most of what one would expect at an indie. There was a selection of OTC meds, sundries, toys, as well as some souvenirs. I was able to quickly find what I needed - the whole experience was seamless and I was out the door before I knew it. Staff was friendly - while they don't have a super large selection, it seems like a good place to get something in a pinch. It's also nice to see a neighborhood pharmacy so embedded in their community - in these days of slashing reimbursements, independent pharmacies are becoming a rare commodity. Worth a stop in if you're in the area. read more

I've walked by here probably hundreds of times but never actually went in until this past week when I was in dire need of sunscreen with this ridiculous heatwave we've been having. We are on vacation visiting from Utah, and my poor kids had rashes from swimming at the beach. We searched pharmacies all over Newport and Costa Mesa for Calmoseptine with no luck. We decided to visit Balboa island and beach and came across Balboa Pharmacy. They saved us and had Calmoseptine! I have happy kids and feel so grateful! They were very friendly and super helpful. My friend and I were going parasailing, but we ran out of water as were drove here from LA. So our first stop was this pharmacy. This place has an interesting exterior. It has an old-school sign, probably dating back to the 50's. Inside was a bunch of miscellaneous merchandise that you'd see at any old pharmacy/convenience store. We didn't stay long to check out everything, we grabbed two water bottles, paid, and left. The store clerk was nice, and the place was clean and well kept. There was not really much foot traffic, but it was still early in the day. This is a small and nice stop in Newport. read more

I was biking with a couple of friends down the Newport Balboa Bike trail when one of my friends ended up with a bad tumble and had a wide, 1 cm piece of his calf carved out. I had bandaids, but no other first aid, so I searched for anything I could find nearby. I rode only two blocks away when I came upon Balboa Pharmacy. The owner was incredibly helpful in pointing me to the first aid section and was great at explaining that I would need hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic cream to treat the wound. She even gave me a few napkins to help stop the bleeding! Overall, I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time and my experience with Balboa Pharmacy could not have been any better :) read more

They really need to update their yelp STORE AND PHARMACY HOURS & put that their pharmacy is CLOSED on sundays for ppl who send over urgent prescriptions only to find out they cannot get it bc it's CLOSED ALTHOUGH YELP SAYS ITS OPEN , and then get told yeah the temp usually "brings in a lot of confusion" So update it!!!!! read more

She went above and beyond by calling to let me know my insurance wouldn't cover a prescription and helping me by contacting the physician to have them write one that would be more affordable. Kim is absolutely fantastic I went in needing a thank you note and because they were remodeling, they happen to be all out of them however, she told me that she had a personal thank you note in her car that she would give me. She then proceeded to get her very own card and give it to me so I would have a thank you note. She also did not charge me for the card because they were all out. I have been a customer of Balboa Pharmacy for many years. I met the new Pharmacist Suzanne a few years ago and the level of detail she provided in my first interaction shocked me. I asked her who she was because I had never seen her. She was friendly and knowledgable. I switched all our prescriptions over. I have even had debates in doctors offices when I specifically requested my prescriptions go to to Balboa Pharmacy. A few of my doctors offices have relationships with mail in pharmacies and they try and convince their patients it is less expensive. I have found this to be untrue. Doctors do not know individual co pays and their personal costs and should not be able to persuade customers on pharmacy choice. I can call or text Suzanne any time even after hours and she responds immediately and I have never ever felt like I was a bother. I will not go to a chain ever again unless Suzanne is no longer at Balboa. She even will bring my prescription to my car! Having Suzanne is a reflection of our community high class with high class service. read more

The place smells like an old dusty building that was never remodeled since the 1900's (which is when it was built). The 2 older ladies are very rude and disrespectful and had a nasty attitude towards me for wanting to look at their probiotic section. The prices are overpriced and the probiotic i looked at was expired. Unless you want an expired product I suggest you avoid this horrible dusty place and go somewhere else. read more
