One of my favorite things about this place is the eclectic outdoor seating. Little ones love sitting in the boat table, and calling out to Elmo across the street. We hit this place up all year long. Great bagels, sandwiches, and his Italian specialties are great. Plus best 2fer pizza deal around. Summer staff is terrific, a great group of college kids. Off season, it's a pleasure, gets a little bumpy on those holiday weekends when out-of-towners can get testy and impatient. It really gives me a chance to pause and practice patience. So when I show up on a Labor Day or Columbus Day Weekend, I pack an extra helping of grace and peace with for the staff - they sure deserve it. read more

Please, please someone open up a DECENT BAGEL STORE in Ortley!! I forget how awful this place is because I hate to come in here. The older guy (owner maybe?) has the worst customer service skills. He seemed frazzled at 7 am today with no customers there. I asked if he had whole wheat bagels...and he doesn't look up-just makes a weird hand gesture. I asked what that hand signal was...and he seemed annoyed saying "I was pointing to the bagels behind me". Oh, ok. Asked if he had flavored cream cheese because none of them were labeled. Big sigh and he starts listing them. I asked for strawberry and he keeps rambling off the rest of them. Bizarre. Bagel was hard and tasteless (again...it was 7 a.m., shouldn't they be fresh?). My friends and I always go here after watching the sunrise in Seaside/Lavallete. Pretty decent bagels but had a few instances where my order didn't come out right (but they fixed it after telling them). Some downsides are they only take cash and the seating area outside is a little unorganized. I believe her words were "yes I checked on your order. And what I mean when I say that is don't stand there and watch us." Initially, I was quite excited to see that they had a sun-dried tomato cream cheese option on the menu because it sounded SO good and amazing?! Plus, I've never heard of such a thing. However, the worker told me they didn't have it, so I opted for their garlic and herbs cream cheese option, but they didn't have that either. I decided to get just plain cream cheese because of that. I did appreciate the worker's patience! The cream cheese wasn't as good as I wanted it to be- it tasted light and faint but I was looking for a more wholesome, fuller flavor. They were generous with the amount of cream cheese they spread on it, which was great because I normally use a lot! The bagel was tasty!! The outer part of it had a crust-like consistency to it and the inside was soft and thick. It was a decent size and quite filling. The shop was very busy but the line moved pretty quickly. Best bagels on the island. If you want to match your Jersey/New York caliber of bagels, go to BB. They are perfectly crusted on the outside and buoyant on the inside. Perfect size, nice and big. You get that nice crunch when you initially cut into it and then give as you continue to cut because the bread is so perfectly airy. We freeze them and even at the end of the summer once their defrosted you get the same deliciousness as if they were fresh. The place is kind of dirty and if you go past 8:00 am be prepared for long long lines, but it's worth it! There is another bagel shop in Lavalette which is owned by the same person so you don't have to travel to seaside to get these bagels. read more
