I accidentally fell into the spot when occupying Rose City Park neighborhood several years ago, and am gratuitously rewarded with the same celebration of delight - absolutely nothing has changed, aside from some new menu items (check out Three-Berry Pie orders and a Summer Seasonal menu including a top-selling Figgy Buckwheat Scone)... Meanwhile I'm just as excited to find their baked goods around town, as much as i was the broader selection here at the source. EXPERT PAIRING - Strawberry Scone w/ Case Study Cortado (next door). Not sweet-not unsweet bready scone encrusted with MELTED (NOT bruléed) white sugar, topped with a dollop of rich strawberry jam (another specialty, check the cookbook). PERFECT DONT CHANGE A THING. I'll be savoring that sweet memory for days. Another gem - (FOUND at Steven Smith, because they sell down early in the retail space) - a Black Lavender Almond Cake. I was really disappointed, and I'm so sad to say that. Maybe I just need to visit again sometime when I'm in Portland, but there are so many other places I'm not sure if I'll make it back. It wasn't the lack of selection; that was to be expected since we stopped by in the last 30 minutes or so of the day. It wasn't that it was more a commercial bakery than retail (in presentation, at least), because I don't care as long as the stuff tastes good. But the food items didn't look great. Kouign amann are my favorite pastry, but these ones didn't look very appetizing and were so depressed-looking. I couldn't help wondering if they used enough butter/if it was too warm, because I haven't often seen them look so dense. The taste didn't do much to recommend them either. It was ok, but just not worth stopping here instead of another, better bakery. It's so popular that I think I might give it another shot when I'm in Portland again sometime because it seems like I'm missing out on something great. read more

For pastries, croissants, quiches, this is a 5 star bakery. Everything I've tried has been excellent. Their twice-baked almond croissants are the best in the country. The two seasonal quiches have perfect crusts. The hand pies are also notable, as are the scones. Alittle pricey, but well-worth it. Great staff. Bakeshop is a small bakery which does a rotating selection of pastries, pies, and cookies. They do order-in-advance holiday baking. One of their items is a Basque cheeseake. It was sweeter and with a lot of vanilla in comparison to other versions. Bakeshop is an amazing bakery. Not sure why I haven't reviewed them yet; I stop by every time I'm nearby, for the past 5 years. Step inside and inhale - the yeasty bread smell is intoxicating. Their pastries are perfection. They use whole grain flours which gives a unique taste. This visit I picked up a kouigan amann, an apple handier, and a slice of pumpkin bread. I waited much too long to discover how amazing Bakeshop is! Seriously, way too long. The baked goods offered in this Hollywood bakery are simply divine. I've been dreaming about my golden, flakey cruffin brushed with orange essence and magic since I took my first bite this morning. As I was initially holding it in my hands I thought, "oops, I chose the wrong thing for breakfast!" I was hungry and at first glance it seemed somewhat unsubstantial. I was so wrong. It was light and airy on the outside, but had a velvety, rich brioche interior that made me squeal with delight. Everything is stylishly curated and so completely gorgeous, all of the baked goods look like works of art. I bought an assortment of pastries and baked goods to share with friends at breakfast, and we ended up splitting many of the items so we could taste all of the different options. The pumpkin hand pie was scrumptious with a flakey, shiny egg-washed crust and delicate pumpkin filling. The pecan roll was sweet, not too dense, and beautiful beyond belief! Everything is gorgeous, delicious and highly recommendable at Bakeshop, I will definitely be returning and trying everything they have to offer. Their offerings are priced as one might expect for items from an artisanal bakery. I think I spent around $25 for four items to share with my friends. Was driving by and thought I have to stop. Since I am still looking for more great spots to get good bread. To my surprise this was more of a sweet shop. They only do pastry - sweet and savers. I have to say it was good but also it seems a lot of the items are made around the same dough / style of bakery (layered like filo or croissant) so I got a selection of five and felt they where all a little bit the same. As said they were good so you should go and find some you like from the filling and it will be good. I decided not to come back since it simply not for me. read more

Very delicious pastries! We stumbled upon their spot early Sunday so got to try their fresh goodies. The seasonal Strawberry Tart was super flaky. Strawberry filling was a tad sweet but worked well with the buttery pastry. The Blueberry Graham Scone was also tasty. Crumbly and short. Great with a cup of coffee. This bake shop smells like heaven. So many amazing pastry options. Prices are very spendy (I'm also jaded from visiting Paris and croissants being under $2). $7 ish for a chocolate croissant. I'm not a fan of the powdered sugar ontop because it flies everywhere when you eat it, and it's not necessary. The chocolate is perfect rich and dark. My croissant did not have an even distribution of chocolate. It may have baked weird or been rolled weird. It's a bit crispier than I prefer but tastes great. Left flakes everywhere. The way to the heart... The moment I stepped into this little bakery, two things wafted at me. One, the fragrant scents of just baked goods, and an old saying that my grandmother used to say, "The way to the heart is through the stomach." This is my first time venturing into this little shoppe, but what a treat! For us newbies, the first thing that will overwhelm you are all the delicious choices displayed in front of you. But my budget dictated that I needed to make a choice... A choice that will definitely bring me back again Today, I chose the ham and cheese croissant, the pain au chocolat, and the pumpkin/apple hand pie. But again, there were so many other amazing options to select from. The staff is friendly. It is always nice to be greeted with a welcoming, "Good morning." There's really no place to sit, except for two chairs near the front window, which is probably a good thing as it would have lessened my willpower not to buy more of these goodies. I will be back. My beloved cheese straws got a glow up and they are EVERYTHING. No really...they are now "Everything cheese straws". I still think these are the best thing on their menu. The last time I came they must have had a bad batch that was slightly overcooked but this was perfect. The service was also very friendly and kind. Worth all of the stars. read more

We dropped by Bakeshop right after opening on a Friday. We were kind of worried about there being a long line given some of the other reviews (and our experience with other bakeries in the region), but luckily we found that there was no line at all and everything was available. There were so many items we wanted to try, but we managed to pare it down to just 3: Cheese Straw ($3.50) - Wow, I was very impressed with this pastry. Super crusty on the outside, with a very buttery and flaky interior. The cheese is applied liberally around the pastry and adds such a great cheesy crisp. There's a bit of heat that comes through most likely from added cayenne pepper. It tastes overall quite similar to a Southern Cheese Straw, which is one of my favorite snacks. Almond Croissant ($8) - This croissant is cut in half, filled with a generous amount of almond frangipane, and topped with almonds and powdered sugar. The dough is appropriately laminated and has great texture. As soon as you bite into the croissant, you get a strong almond frangrance. Based on the very crisp texture that's unusually thick, I can only surmise that this is twice baked and for some added complexity, I believe they add some syrup afterwards. I could taste some citrusy and flowery notes - maybe rose syrup? It's a good almond croissant, but very expensive. In fact, it's the most expensive Almond Croissant I've ever had - and I've had many in higher cost of living places like San Francisco, Seattle, DC, etc. Heck, I regularly go to a place that mills their own flour, locally sources most ingredients, etc, and they are still cheaper than Bakeshop! Kouign Amann ($7) - This was the only disappointment in the bunch. We saw from the very start how strangely shaped this was - instead of a more traditional circular base, the kouign amann here is square. The croissant dough here is well laminated, but doesn't seem to have much, if any, sugar added to the interior. Instead, they seem to only apply sugar on the top, which then piles into lumps on the bottom of the baking pan when heated. This creates basically a splotchy caramel layer on the bottom of the pastry, but this flavor is missing from everywhere else. This pastry is garnished with sea salt on the top. i think they bake this too long - the crisp layer on the exterior was a bit too thick for me. I looked at other photos of the Kouign Amann and they look like more traditional ones. Maybe this was just a bad batch? I'd definitely drop by again when I'm in the area to try more items, maybe some of the more affordable/reasonably priced ones and especially the savory pastries. read more

One of my favorite bakeries in Portland. I will say that I don't like things overly sweet, so that's why I like the things here. So if you like really sweet things, go to Voodoo Donuts. But here are almost high-end quality baked goods, and also pricey. It's a small shop with just a few bar counter stools but it's mostly to buy and take home. My favorite thing is the kouign amann, which their version is like a big puffed square. I just love all the flakey croissant layers and the hit of caramelized parts, mostly on the bottom. It's one of my favorite treats. Their quiches are also tasty and nice for a quick lunch. The basque cheesecake was a bit too light and fluffy to me, what that meant is that it didn't really hold together on my fork. I like my cheesecake with a bit more density. But still, I mostly go back for the kouign amann anyway. Haha. read more

I'm glad I didn't know this place was so close to me until recently, because it is way too tempting! These baked goods are delicious. Be prepared to wait in line. For the longest time I'd drive down Sandy and be amazed that the coffee shop next door was so busy - or maybe it was just COVID limiting how many people could enter at once... nope, it was Bake Shop's popularity! I believe they do sell out of items each day so arrive early or order online if you want to guarantee something. We got an assortment of items, croissants and muffins and their basque cheesecake. Prices weren't cheap but not outrageous either. Everything was great. Neatly packaged, delicious tasting, well baked. I'm so torn... The burnt basque cheesecake was luscious and creamy. I enjoyed the not too sweet taste and the custard texture of the cheesecake. The chocolate chip cookie was okay. I'm very picky about my cookies. They need a one not too sweet, balance of chunky chocolate pieces, chewy inside, and crispy outside. I can't recall all the names of the pastries, but for the good of the Yelp community I tried a lot! Nothing outstanding but the burnt basque cheesecake. Bakeshop is the real deal! It's an unassuming bakery that consistently delivers the most amazing pastries, many unique. They are one of the best bakeries in Portland, hands down. Even if you haven't been there, if you've had delicious whole grain pastries, like a Figgy Buckwheat Scone rolled and sliced like a pinwheel, then you've had a Bakeshop treat. Their goodies are served in 4-5 dozen coffee and tea shops around Portland. It's the Figgy Scone that I enjoyed elsewhere that led me to the Mothership and it's what keeps me coming back! For me, any flour that is the opposite of white is my thing. Bakeshop specializes in whole grain pastries, cookies, muffins and pies. The Figgy Scone is made with buckwheat flour giving it a denser texture with a bit of nuttiness without being dry; the fig jam swirled into the pastry is the perfect companion. I want you to try it but chances are, you will never get to experience anything else since you will keep coming back for the same thing! It's that darn good! Paired with good coffee, it's Heaven. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone today, I selected the chocolate orange pecan scone and no surprise, it was killer. The addition of orange really makes this next level. The subtle flavor reminds me of the orange slices dipped in dark chocolate. It's not overwhelming, just a hint that hits you after you finish a bite. It has a similar dense texture but it a but flakier. Of course I got a Figgy scone to enjoy the following day! They are both 5 stars! The Bakeshop is small with limited seating so I usually get my treat to go or bring it next door to Case Study coffee for the perfect combo. Staff is friendly and patient - they are used to customers ogling over all the items and taking lots of time to decide! Bakeshop is closed Mondays and Tuesdays so plan your visit accordingly, I'd Int want you to be disappointed! Located right on NE Sandy, parking is on the street and surprisingly easy. Our purchase was disappointing. We bought a slice of carrot cake and a chocolate croissant. The carrot cake was more like spice cake: sweet and spiced, but a bit dry with little visible carrot and no nuts or raisins. The cream cheese icing was okay, but nothing special. This is my favorite bakery in Portland! I will really miss it since I'm moving to Salem. But with their new system of online advanced ordering and a pick up window, I can see myself still driving up occasionally for a treat of amazing baked goods and to support a great business. Frankly, the new system actually might be an improvement, since the customer area is super small and always seemed a space better suited to pickup and not for lingering. I appreciate this bakery's commitment to excellence but also innovation. They like to put a unique spin on old favorites, most often with different grains that aren't typical for many American baked goods. I have had many a scone or cookie that had a complexity that put it above the norm and made the experience of eating it so memorable. I like the mindfulness these sorts of creations inspire. Bakeshop makes you want to stop, slow down and truly take your time with their delicacies. Their take on croissants is truly amazing and unique. The almond croissant sounds simple but is most assuredly one of the best things I've ever eaten. They are split, filled with frangipane, coated with orange blossom vanilla syrup (!) and topped with more frangipane and almonds. It is then baked again for a shatteringly crisp exterior and a rich, sweet, chewy center. Amazing taste AND texture. They are presently offering a savory sibling, called a Croissant Croque-Monsieur. Again a croissant is split and this time filled with locally sourced ham from Tails and Trotters, topped with Gruyère cheese and a béchamel sauce (which is also brushed on the croissant). It all comes together to deliver an amazingly crisp, rich, meaty, cheesy, tangy explosion in your mouth. Highly recommended!!!! For now, it seems like you can make your order online from Sunday until Wednesday, for pickup (or local delivery) the following Saturday and Sunday. This year, we all deserve a little treat! Easily one of the best bakeries in Portland, don't sleep on this one. I ordered online for pick up early Sunday morning. The pictures online are mouth watering, but the pastries are even better. I scheduled a 9:45 pick up and there wasn't anyone else in site. They have also taken plenty of safety measures and have a little take out window, so you don't have to go inside. We ordered 2 morning buns, which were an absolutely delight. They were flaky and full of cinnamon flavor. There were crunchy bits of caramelized cinnamon and sugar that were the highlight of the buns. I would order 3 next time so we don't have to share. We also loved the apple hand pie, which had a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The apple was the star of the show, but the flaky pastry was also delicious. Ever since leaving San Francisco, I've been looking for a Tartine replacement. This isn't the Tartine replacement that I was looking for, but it's the Tartine replacement I didn't know I was looking for and found accidentally. For me, it has the perfect croissants. Plain, cheese, tomato, and CREME FILLED. For my wife, it has the perfect alternate flour pastries. Little shop with not much room to hang around, but everything here is amazing, and the staff is super helpful. This Shoppe was delightful. Was in town visiting family and stopped in for breakfast pastries. They were excellent. They was a huge verity and the place was super clean. Witnessed an employee drop a cookie cutter (?) on the floor. She immediately took it to the sink and changed her gloves. Didn't look around, just did the right thing. My B-I-L is a huge foodie and asked about pie options. Either the owner or head chef came out and discussed the options and prep at length. Really took the time to talk to him about ingredients and preparation. There are limited gluten-free options, but the ones they had were also yummy. Not all the pastry made it back to the house.
