If you're looking to adopt a pet, I would highly recommend visiting Bakersfield SPCA's website as I was told that it is up to date with all of the current animals that are available for adoption! It's a little difficult to get ahold of this place over the phone, but once you do, they only take same day appointments & you have to call on the day you want to visit + hope that there are free appointments. We visited to view cats and were helped shortly after arriving. According to the front desk, if the animal that you're interested in picking up has already been spayed, you can take them home the same day! Or, if they have been, they either try to get them spayed/neutered the next day, or by Tuesdays (as those are their spay/neuter days). We unexpectedly found the perfect little baby to take home, 20 minutes, a bit of paper work + calls to my apartment complex and $100 later, we were given all the paper work / vaccine records + a bag of kitten kibble! Make sure to bring your own carrier if you're really looking to pick up a furry friend on the same day. The only thing I didn't like was finding out afterwards that our little boy hadn't finished his course of vaccines. A friend of mine has adopted cats from an SPCA before & because they hadn't finished having their vaccines, they were able to go in to the facility to finish off their booster shots free of cost. read more

Terrible customer service. "HELPING PETS", went there to see if they can help take in two adorable pups that were dumped in my yard. Rude lady comes to take a look at them just to say she can not take them in due to them being "sick". Mind you this lady isn't even a vet or technician.They were going to charge me $30 a piece for each of them to intake them. Lady suggested to take them to KCAS instead not knowing they'll probably get killed there and possibly not get adopted.Very unprofessional. Wanting to diagnose these babies without running test or even being certified to say exactly what's going on.Do not come here, waste of time, and clearly only want your money, makes sense coming from a non-profit organization. read more

I've had multiple bad experiences when trying to surrender strays. They were rude and even hung up on me because I wanted to know their process. They told me they could not take a mom and kittens together, that the kittens would have to be 8 weeks and 2 pounds and they wouldn't have space for a mom . Come to find out they actually can take baby and mom when mom is still feeding , however because they were dishonest and had me wait, I could not get them all in because "mom was an adult and baby's didn't need her anymore " then when they finally said they'd take baby's they said they had room but then tried everything to discourage me from bringing them in . I took them because I had no other choice and they said baby had possible ring worm because they seen the pee on him glow with the black light from Soiling himself on the way there stating that it could be ringworm . Again they had no intention on taking them from the start . Then she went on to say they have 1200 cats and room is limited this is when I knew the REAL reason his pee was "possible ringworm" waisted our time and theirs - not understanding what some people have to go through to get them their . Honestly people - do better , you chose to work there don't take it out on us . Also instead of being rude to us for not having room and being overwhelmed build out and expand or stop working there. So many establishments claiming to help stray animals but then scream 'no room' while being rude to us and waisting our time turning us away anyway. You're not the only ones frustrated here. I adopted the love of my life from the SPCA. Correction, my bf did. I went here about four years ago with my bf at the time, we were walking by the small dog section and as I passed by one cage, a little black chihuahua ran to the bars, and rolled on his back to have his tummy scratched. AWWWW! I said, and my bf dragged me away. "You don't have time for a dog" he told me and made us go home. He told me he was going to his cousins, but actually went back to the SPCA and asked to play with Carlos in the play yard... and saw what indeed a sweetheart he was; he paid the $20, and did the paperwork for Carlos to get neutered, get a chip, etc. When my bf came home, he threw the receipt at me. "You got your dog." When I got to go pick him up a week later and he was brought out to me, he was all wiggly and happy. It's been a love story ever since.... I'm grateful for the post adoption help with my new baby. I appreciate that following the adoption, I was given a referral for a free visit to the vet for well doggy care. There is never been a more spoiled pooch than Carlos. He goes everywhere with me. Even if it's weird - he likes to be in the bathroom and lay on the rug while I shower lol. He gets to travel with us, unlike our rescue kitties. Carlos brings so much joy to my life, something that I very recently came to really appreciate when he got out and was gone for more than 24 hours. (I came back to the SPCA to see whether someone had found him and took him here.) I appreciate the care they have at the SPCA. It felt more warm, like more like a zoo than a jail .... weird analogy but I think you get what I mean by seeing all these animals behind bars / in cages..... I also went to another shelter and saw all the other found dogs and cats there and thought to myself I wish there was as much care there as there was at the SPCA. I don't want to harsh on the other place because thank goodness they exist and maybe the sheer volume of abandonments make managing so many animals humanely is difficult. The person that I spoke to refused to hold a dog I absolutely wanted or take my phone number claims it wasn't allowed plus I was going to fill out an adaptation application and it kept forwarding me to a Pet Insurance application, I'm not going to buy Pet insurance until I have my adoption completed that being said it never accurd. read more

On 5/3 & 5/6 of this year (2024) I called Bakersfield SPCA in a desperate effort to place a Husky pup under a year old I found, with a $1000 pledge. Not only did they refuse him due to his breed size, the ladies I spoke with each day did not offer any other resource or good will advice. In fact, they said to take him to the local shelter or leave him where I found him. I did speak to a leadership level personnel of my experience. Today, I opted to leave a review when I got an email from a car dealership that has partnered up with Bakersfield SPCA. I will neither purchase from this car manufacturer or donate to this org. I noticed on the SPCA website they primarily house only small breed pups, with only one large size breed (intake 9/18), oddly enough, I never received a call there was an opening for the exact scenario I had. Trust factor gone with this organization and I hope there is a positive change in their operation. THE POSITIVE of this is: I donated that $$$ to another rescue org and kept that handsome furbaby! read more

We had a wonderful experience last weekend when we rescued from the Bakersfield, SPCA. They do a thorough check to ensure their pets go to good homes. We brought our dog to a meet and greet with the puppy we were interested in adopting, and it went smoothly. We had no issues and everyone there was so kind. I'm confused by some of the reviews because we had a great experience! We are so lucky and thankful we were able to rescue Northern after losing our cavalier King Charles last year. I must first start by saying this 3 star review in no way should deter you from adopting from this SPCA.   In fact i beg you to if you are considering getting a pet please look here first these animals need loving care and nourishment!!  And the condition my older son and I received our kittens/cats in tells a lot as to the care they receive here unfortunately... My oldest has adopted 2 cats from here in the past several months. Why idk they have wayyy too many demons to have pets in my opinion and that's not an exaggeration LOL badly behaved demons!!  Anyhoo both cats were very skinny bony in fact and both had been there for at least several months as was mine.  Theirs somehow acclimated easily i assume they were happy to be out of hell haha sorry had to.. Everything is done online. You find the animal you'd like to adopt, then fill out an application, someone will call you usually within 3-4 days.  My son had been watching the website for a few months. That's how we knew these cats had been there at least that long as does the website tell you how long they've had an animal as well.   He finally made a decision with this lil guy we now have :)...We got there to pick TomFüüzy up. They pulled us into a room, we signed the paperwork and they brought him in a carrier with a bag of Hills science diet kitten food. They said that is what they feed them.   When we got home and got him out we immediately noticed how insanely skinny he was!  I'm talking his skin was hanging and his fur was brittle, coarse and dry, not soft like kitten fur. All of his bones were poking out as if that's all he consisted of, no fat no muscle It felt as though he'd break that's how frail he was :(...idk how in the hell he can be this malnourished after a minimum of 2 months there??  When he finally started trying to eat and drink he had no idea how he couldn't chew the food properly and acted like he'd never eaten before.  And the water he didn't know how to drink I assume he was fed water from a drip spout there but as dehydrated as he was makes me wonder if they ever made sure he was actually drinking it or consuming the food!!!  This is a 5 month old kitten according to them.  So my god please come and adopt from them now!!!   Now a little less than 2 weeks later he is eating like a pig, drinking like a fish and being sweet and also a rambunctious little shit haha!!  He's also looking like the adorable lil chub chub kitten he should be.  His fur is super soft and his general health is 100% improved :)... I most certainly think there is laziness and lack of care when it comes to feeding them for damn sure here i've no clue why as this is all they do on a daily basis.  All I can attest to is my experience and my oldest son's experience which was very close to mine.  That's not a coincidence!!  Will i come back in the future oh you bet your sweet ass i will these animals deserve a loving home... read more

I had a good experience at the SPCA when I was looking to adopt a small dog. The staff at the front counter were a little short but mostly friendly and the staff out in the yard that took us around to look at the dog were great, they were super friendly and asked us about our home environment, yard size, etc and showed us some dogs they thought would fit our needs. As fate would have it there was a dog out in the play yard with the other small dogs that wasn't on our list but caught my eye. She seemed very mellow and wasn't running around and barking at us like the others. I asked if we could see her and they let us in the play area with the small dogs. The others were running around barking and this one walks over, jumps into my wife's lap and starts licking her hand. We were sold and applied for adoption. The paperwork was quick and painless and I was able to pick her up 2 days later, she's the sweetest little dog and is just so happy to have a family, I would definitely return to the SPCA if I get another dog in the future, thanks to all the staff there for their kindness and assistance. read more

I went for a dog walk through and fell in love with one of their puppies was told to fill out an application only to be denied because I live in an apartment and to look for another dog. We adopted our sweet pug-boxer-lab mix on 6/20 and we are so grateful to the Bakersfield SPCA for making the love connection happen! We had been to one other shelter that day and when we walked in here we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and given tips on how to navigate the facility. The inside is well maintained with donation bins and items available for purchase to benefit the shelter. We walked around and enjoyed looking at all the pups and noting which ones we wanted a 2nd look at. We asked to see our dog to have a little playtime and a friendly and knowledgeable staff member directed us to the fenced in play yard. While we played he chatted us up about how he likes working there and the the process of adoption should we chose to. When we went back inside we payed the adoption fee and they let us know they would be calling us to pick him up after his surgery. They called our land lord to verify pets were welcome and his breed was accepted. When we did pick him up we signed adoption paperwork and they explained about taking him to see a vet and were given a free visit voucher. The process was pretty painless. We happily went home with our boy. We are so grateful to the SPCA and I've been telling everyone we meet where we got our boy from and how wonderful they made our 1st adoption experience. read more

i've gone here and adopted two of my animals from here before and had decent experiences. Today, I found a dog today and wasn't able to keep her, however i called and they said they wouldn't be able to shelter her because they didn't have room for that size of dogs. however, when i took the dog to check if she was chipped they said she wasn't and they would evaluate her. Jeanette helped me and was extremely rude. She had no patience was very unpleasant and was very condescending. I let her know that the dog was bleeding due to being in heat and she said " well yeah she's on her menstrual cycle". she was very rude. i had let her know that i called and they had said they wouldn't be able to keep her and she said " who told you that because it's not true" she was very very rude. i was under the impression if the dog didn't have a chip id be responsible on finding a home so i was looking for a home and had people interested. i had asked her if it would it be fine if i had a few minutes before i handed the dog over to spca to make sure nobody i knew didn't want her. she was pressuring me on giving the dog to spca and didn't give me any time to make sure people i knew didn't want her. she was extremely unpleasant, condescending, and rude. i recommend spca as a place to adopt but jeanette was very rude. read more

I am extremely disappointed in the SPCA. I found a senior dog at my house at 2AM this morning. I take him to a vet to scan for a chip. He has a chip so I call the info on it. He was registered to the local shelter. So I call them and they give me an address and phone number. I call the number and it is the original owner who ended up surrendering him to the SPCA in December 2019. So I go to the SPCA for them to get his chip information to get me his new adopted owners and they wouldn't give me that information. Instead they told me I had to pay $30 to surrender him basically for them to call his new owners. For ONE... SPCA should have switched the dogs chip information over to the new owners and TWO what happened to we are all in this together? You are going to charge me for wanting to help this dog go back to his owners?? It is not like he was my dog and I was giving him up. Completely disappointed. OH and then when I said you're charging me $30 for a dog that is yours? The lady goes "oh he isn't our dog, he was adopted" WHHAAATTT!! That dog should be considered one of yours for the rest of his life. Even if he was adopted out. I used to volunteer for a rescue and when we adopted a dog out.. we still considered that dog ours and we would help the new owners to cover medical bills, etc. because we helped save that dog so we considered it ours for life. So that was pretty shameful to hear her say "oh hes not ours we adopted him out" bottom line... I won't donate or volunteer for SPCA... ever. Very sad it seemed more about the $$ then the dogs. Please make sure you teach the owner a lesson about keeping microchip information up to date and a tag on the dog. I ended up finding out the new owner after posting the dog on facebook and someone gave me their number so I was able to let them know to do all those things to help that dog and where to go pick him up at. I was told I could bring a cat I rescued to them to re-home and it would cost $30. I had the cat overnight after I rescued it. When I brought her in, the tech, KRISTEN told me it would be $100. When I tried to explain how i ended up with the cat, she got rude, cut me off saying "I'm not going down that road" like I was being sneaky. It wasn't the money, it was Kristin's rude behavior when I was so upset turning in this beautiful cat that I cannot keep, that upset me to the point of tears. I paid the fee and walked out crying from having to leave the cat, and endure Kristin's rude insinuation that I was lying about how I got the cat. God willing I never have to come here again. Rest of the staff were understanding. This is one of my charities I contribute to and will have to rethink that due to their rude "technician" or whatever her job is. A sad experience! read more

We just adopted our new addition to our family from here. Folks, if you have room in your hearts and home, ADOPT!!! Anyway, you walk in and you approach a counter where volunteers/workers are there to assist you. If you don't want to talk to them, go through the double doors which will lead you to the dogs/puppies. Walk around, til you find that true love that catches your eyes. Ask to play with them, and they'll take you to the play area. Adoption process seemed pretty smooth. I told them which dog I wanted to adopt, sent me to the front counter, filled out an application, paid $100 (FYI: puppies are $125), we were told we had to wait 3-10 days before she can go home. They have to spay/neuter the dogs before they leave. We were told the Vet comes in on Wednesdays but there's only so much they can take on the list. So we adopted her on Saturday, got a call on Wednesday to pick her up. Working full time and all the way by the AFB, it was hard to just ask to leave work. Asked if we can pick her up Saturday, was told they have to get Managements approval. What? Ok, whatever, no big deal. Luckily, my hubby was able to pick her up just in the knick of time. We didn't tell the kids she was coming home that day, so they were extremely surprised when we got home. read more

First of all this is going to be a review about the facility as it pertains to the quality of care and service to the dogs. Because at the end of the day that's what matters. I had not been here in years and when I walked in I immediately noted that they have made some facility improvements that truly seem to be in the best interest of providing as comfortable and engaging of an environment possible for their animals. Theres a play yard immediately outside of the office lobby, then at least two more around the premises. The kennels are indoor/outdoor. I think this is important. After all, it's about the quality of life of the animals. These people work with these animals and bond with them and truly want what's best for them. The "shelter mama" for the dog I chose was truly amazing. I could tell she loved this dog and was invested in rooting for her to go to a great home. Let's face it, Bakersfield can be a bit irresponsible and I'm certain these people see a bit of heartbreaking and frustrating turnaround when people go in and take on more than they can handle with a dog or cat. Anyway, I digress, we actually did the meet and greet with our dog and then left to think about it, only to scurry back and barely make it in, moments before closing to make the transaction happen. They were so cool about it and watching the shelter mama trot my sweet dog down the aisle, damn near brought tears to my eyes. A month later and my little family is doing just fine, thanks in large part to all of the work invested by the SPCA and their staff. read more

This is something I believe everyone needs to know about the Bakersfield SPCA. Several years ago, our beloved Vizsla got out and we searched every where to find him. We posted an Ad in The Bakersfield Californian and visited all the shelters every day. One day while being escorted through the Bakersfield SPCA on Gipson, my husband heard Scout barking. He told the escort he heard him and showed him the door the barking came from. The escort told him, no he had seen all the dogs in the shelter. Later, we received a call from a lovely woman who raised Vizslas. She had received a call from someone who volunteered at the SPCA, and was also a Vizsla lover, who told her our Scout was indeed there, but they were holding him for auction. We agreed to meet her at the SPCA at a specific date and time to retrieve our dog. Upon arriving, we were told our Scout was not there and were given false information. The woman who had given us the information then identified herself and admitted she had made the initial call. They then retrieved our Scout and he was thrilled to see us. Had those two heros not contacted us, we would never have seen our boy again. We had him chipped and neutered, and had him until he was 14 years old. We had to put him down last December. I'm still not over the loss. I need to add that this was shortly after Buck Owens died in 2006. They had us wait with a chaperon while they retrieved Scout. While waiting, I commented that it must have been wonderful to be remembered in Buck Owens will. That the money should help a lot. The chaperon responded with, "It wasn't as much as you think". read more

The employee took the dog out so we could meet her and I ended up falling in love with her. A year later, she's as happy as could be. My family and I are huge rescue supporters but today I was very disappointed. My mother and father are moving out of the state and will not have a yard. My mom has a dog that she rescued from the KCAS here in Bakersfield. Of course with everything going on right now, shelters are out of room and can no longer take animal relinquishes. I understand this even though its very sad because there are many reasons why people have to relinquish their dog. My mom has called the SPCA for weeks trying to see if they have room and they have always encouraged her to check back in. Finally they got someone to say they can bring her in for evaluation. I of course thought this meant if she is mean or gets along with others which I knew was going to be 100% ok because this is the sweetest dog you will ever meet and I have 3 of my own. My mom let the SPCA know that she is American Bulldog over the phone. When my mom and dad showed up they came out and informed them right away they could not take her and their reason was she looked to much like a Pitbull. I have read similar reviews on this page that they do not take mixed or Pitbull dogs. I truly hope there is another explanation why because I see the SPCA commercials trying to get my pledge on TV they show a huge variety of breeds that could receive my pledges. Seems to me like the Bakersfield SPCA just takes in designer dogs. Don't get me wrong I love my own designer dog (miniature dachshund) but I also love my Mastiff, Pitbull and what a lot of people would call a mutt. For an organization that says they give every animal a second chance of life its sad to hear its not every animal just certain breeds of animals. read more

We arrived here right at opening to view a dog we'd seen online. We are a dog experienced home with a regular vet. We inquired at the front desk about the dog and the women pulled the card and then proceeded to tell us all the reasons we shouldn't adopt the dog. First, it would be seven to ten days to fix the dog. Okay, it happens. Then the woman said I'd have to bring my senior dog for a meet and greet. I asked if I could provide her CGC certificate instead as I worried about Kennel Cough and she told me no. No allowances for susceptible senior dogs. I didn't feel right being forced to bring my healthy, stable dog into a shelter environment and risk her health for a meet and greet with a puppy! I could understand for an older dog adoption but a puppy?!? Also, adoption fees are $175 when two blocks away they are $20 and no hoops to jump through. Just go to the county shelter and save an at risk dog. You'll be glad you did! We never even got to see the dog we were interested in. We were treated poorly, discouraged immediately and left. Luckily there are local shelters too! read more

I understand that some people have had less than stellar experiences however, this facility exists to help the animals, and if we can look at it from that perspective, I believe that this is a wonderful place that does good things for our community. They don't deserve one star. My sister had the rudest person on the phone today. She sadly has to depart with her dog that she loves due to her new born being at the children's hospital in Madera. They told her to "figure it out". Not everyone wants to get rid of their pet because they just don't want it anymore. Some have to due to dire circumstances. I went a few times to look at the dogs. After my last visit, I saw a dog that I just had to take with me. I went up front and asked to see the dog and staff came quickly to take out the dog. The worker answered all my questions about the dog. However, I read a review about someone looking too young and getting treated bad, so I was worried about adopting. Once I made the decision to adopt, the staff at the desk asked me, "You do know you have to be 18 to adopt, right?" I told her I was 19 and she asked me for my ID and said I look like I'm 16. Anyways, I got told that I could take the dog on the spot and I was so happy! I had to fill out some paperwork and pay $100. The dogs here seem to be more talkative than the ones at the Kern Animal Services. read more

For a business that exists to rescue animals, they really don't seem to care about finding homes for the ones they have. Sign in their window currently says appointment only, so I called to try to make an appointment. Was told I had to fill out an application online first letting them know which animal I was interested in. About an hour after submitting it, I received a call telling me my application had been "accepted" (?) and they "decided" (!?) I could make an appointment to come see the animal I expressed interest in. I happily made the appointment for later the same afternoon. 10 minutes later, I get a call from the same guy telling me as an update, I can't interact with the animal first, I can just pay the $60 fee, take the animal and if it doesn't work out for whatever reason, bring it back within 10 days. I said it didn't seem like that process was conducive to finding the animal a good fit with a potential home, or the animals well being. Before I could ask why the terms were changed last minute, the guy said "ok" and hung up! Guess I'll try the county and city shelters instead. I recently came in because my sister saw the 11 puppies that were on tv as well as seeing a dog online. What I immediately noticed was that they got rid of a whole section of kennels that used to be on the left once you went through the double doors. From what we were told, they were going to make new ones. The location has a lot of kennels. Every dog that I passed by, I wanted to adopt because I felt bad for them. In the front half you find mainly the small and medium dogs. Toward the back are all the bigger dogs (where they had a super sweet German Shepard and a Chow mix). When we decided we were ready to interact with a dog, they brought it out to one of the two enclosed areas. The dog was able to run around and be free from the cages that they keep them in. We also went to look at the cats because for some reason I've been wanting one. The lady that helped us was very knowledgeable of the cats and answered all of my questions. She asked me what kind I was looking for and immediately knew the one that would be great for me. Though I didn't adopt, it was good having someone that knew what they were doing. If you decide to adopt and you have a dog(s) at home, you are required to bring them for a temper test. If you adopt a cat this is not necessary due to them being able to protect themselves. You know, claws and stuff. Lastly, this is a great place to make donations. Since these kennels are half outside/half inside it is always great to donate blankets for when it gets cold.
