Full of tasty cakes, delicious slices and freshly baked breads I find myself here at least twice a week for lunch, or to pick up takeaways for the weekend (I do believe that the amount of goodies I buy from here may be the reason I am carrying a spare tyre!). The cherry coconut slice is absolutely divine and the vanilla slice, to die for! If you have an upcoming catch up with friends or morning tea with family definitely consider checking out Haleys - you will be the flavour of the party, I don't know how many friends I have impressed with their yummy cakes and bakes. My kids also love this bakery (yes sometimes I go on the weekends too!). They have the cutest little cupcakes, sure to put a smile on any little persons face!

At first I thought it was an honest mistake but now I am convinced this is deliberate. Yesterday 24/4/14 the woman behind the counter made a conscious effort to put the coins under the notes hoping I would slide them straight into my wallet.... Nope, you missed a two dollar coin.... Again. Be wary of these people as you would most small shops that have cash only trade... The loaf of bread tasted like it was already two days old just to put the icing on the cake.

Not having many pennies in my pocket at the time, we decided on what seemed like a quiet little bakery. Monticlare is down the end of 68 Racecourse Rd. With a few plastic seats outside and a very relaxed and casual atmosphere, it felt like the kind of place where I could get a cheap feed. The Bakery had a nice array of breads, croissants, cakes, cupcakes, sandwiches, and pies. The lady serving was lovely and attentive but I felt bad that I had to ask her to repeat the pie flavours because I could not quite understand what she was saying through her thick accent. The pie was the not he best I have ever had but definitely affordable and adequate. Sitting outside, I was pestered by a magpie who obviously intimidates enough customers there to be fed regularly enough. Overall, this was a nice enough bakery.

They also look like their freshly made in house because of their shape and lovely buttery colour. On this day I just wanted the old plain mince pie. What I learned about Monticlair Bakery is that they've been at this business for years and the recipes haven't changed. You need to bit patient with the lady on the counter. Not because she's rude, actually I have nothing bad to say about her. Its just her accent is so heavy it filters most English pronunciations out. Trust me when I say she wants to make sure she's getting your order right. So after a few minutes, I strolled away eating into a pie that has been the same since Monticlaire opened. I hope nothing changes. That is all.

There are always people lingering in front of the long cabinet or sitting at the tables in here. It's always hard to choose what to get from the array of exquisite looking tarts and gateaux on display. The lemon meringue tarts are topped with cone of meringue about three times the height of the base and the Esperance gateau is so green it just about shimmers. On my latest trip to Le Bon Choix I had a strawberry tart and a flat white. The coffee was okay, maybe a B, but the strawberry tart was delicious and they didn't skimp on the strawberries. Le Bon Choix does individual tarts and cakes as well as croissants, eclairs and pain au chocolats but they also do full size cakes to take home and share (or not). Their opera cake looked tempting with it's perfectly lined layers and glistening top. I'm still a Chouquette girl at heart, but if I find myself on this side of town and in need of a pick-me-up, I'm always more than satisfied with a trip to Le Bon Choix.

They started in Byron Bay and continue to work from there with every tasty morsel being baked at their Byron premises. With such a wide range of cookies, all packaged delicately in classy boxes, these delectable treats are hard to resist. It is no wonder then, that The Byron Bay Cookie Company shop at the Brisbane Domestic Terminal is always filed with people. This shop is in the Qantas end of the terminal and is worth searching out if you have the time to spare at the airport. Their cookies make the perfect last minute gift or you might just want to indulge and stock up on a few for yourself. The cookies are not cheap. A small box will set you back about $6 but I recommend you try some anyway. These gourmet cookies are well worth it.

In my younger days I was partial to the 'Dotty Cookie' (it has Smarties!), but as my palate has matured, my firm favourite is the sticky date and ginger (so chunky). Anyway, even as a connoisseur of the delectable Byron Bay Cookie I didn't realise that they had a dedicated store at the airport. When I discovered this on a recent trip to Sydney, I decided to buy myself a cookie (or two...) for the plane and once I was sucked into the cookie vortex I got so distracted by the array of Byron Bay Cookie goodness (cafes tend to stock three or four, here they have them all!) that I nearly missed my flight. Yes, my name actually got paged across the PA system. I had to hide my panic and pretend that I wasn't in fact the Suzannah being paged over the loudspeaker as I paid for my cookie lode. I did that thing where you walk really calmly and non-chalantly out the door but as soon as your out of view you sprint. So there I was sprinting to my gate, hands full of bags and magazines and all I could think about was not crushing my cookies. I made the flight and as soon as the seatbelt sign went off (slash waaay before that) I was flying high on a cloud of sticky date and ginger.
