It is a fantastic place to go for cakes if you are entertaining at home or for a coffee and a croissant of a weekend morning. When my friends and I got our licenses, we'd drive around the back streets of Kedron to eventually end up at our ol' faithful, Baked (as we liked to call it). They used to have more pies than they do now, but the ones they do have are fine little pastry delights. I personally like to lift off the lid with a fork and scoop out the meat in the pie dish. It's the best. They've got steak, pepper steak, steak and kidney, steak and cheese and others. They're all $4. Outside of the pies, Baked to Perfection also put out some sweet candy pastries. You can find old favourites like meringue and neenish tarts here. Even though there might not be as big a range as there used to be, still drop into Baked for a pie. They really are something else.

I love this bakery…read more Back in the day when I'd head out to the discos and catch the last train home, they were open! A pie or sausage roll while I staggered home was just the thing. You got served by the baker who was working out the back, but that's fine. I still pop in for a sausage roll, jam and cream doughnut and red fizzy drink when I'm down that way using the laundromat. Their sausage rolls are the best.

A little hidden gem in Albion, Brewbakers is arguably the best bakery in Brisbane...if not Australia. From perfect bagels and baguettes to sinful donuts, Brewbakers is part of my weekly ritual and they never disappoint. Service is always with a smile, caramel slices are perfectly gooey and the bread a perfect combo of crusty and chewy. So it is clear that I am am fat and, if that is the case, I am totally happy with that. You skinny people clearly don't just know how good Brewbakers really is!

The lady serving was lovely and attentive but I felt bad that I had to ask her to repeat the pie flavours because I could not quite understand what she was saying through her thick accent. The pie was the not he best I have ever had but definitely affordable and adequate. Sitting outside, I was pestered by a magpie who obviously intimidates enough customers there to be fed regularly enough. Overall, this was a nice enough bakery.

Not because she's rude, actually I have nothing bad to say about her. Its just her accent is so heavy it filters most English pronunciations out. We chose a feta and spinach roll and a pork and fennel sausage roll to share. Unfortunately, both were underwhelming. The pastry in each case was soft and greasy rather than crisp and flaky. While we understand that arriving late in the day can affect freshness, the fillings were also disappointing. The spinach and feta was overly salty and lacked texture, and the pork and fennel filling was a smooth, pink, salty paste with no discernible pork or fennel flavour. At $9.40 each, the quality didn't justify the price--we would have been better off buying frozen sausage rolls from the supermarket and baking them at home.

But then again, this is why CakeStar is in the business of making cakes. There are always people lingering in front of the long cabinet or sitting at the tables in here. It's always hard to choose what to get from the array of exquisite looking tarts and gateaux on display. The lemon meringue tarts are topped with cone of meringue about three times the height of the base and the Esperance gateau is so green it just about shimmers. On my latest trip to Le Bon Choix I had a strawberry tart and a flat white. The coffee was okay, maybe a B, but the strawberry tart was delicious and they didn't skimp on the strawberries. Le Bon Choix does individual tarts and cakes as well as croissants, eclairs and pain au chocolats but they also do full size cakes to take home and share (or not). Their opera cake looked tempting with it's perfectly lined layers and glistening top. I'm still a Chouquette girl at heart, but if I find myself on this side of town and in need of a pick-me-up, I'm always more than satisfied with a trip to Le Bon Choix.
