This guy. Where have you been for the last 10 years! Honestly I probably should've been more proactive. I stumbled upon his practice while cross referencing my insurance coverage and yelp. And when I saw the bit about focus on musculoskeletal therapy, my ears perked. I fell on my lower back approximately 10 years ago and I've been dealing with at times, debilitating but for the most part, persistent dull pain/sciatica. I have a lot of upper back/shoulder cramps from being on the phone for long hours. In short, I got lots of back probs. I was hesitant to bring the issue to a medical dr cause usually they'll send me to PT (which may or may not help), possibly give me pain meds/ muscle relaxants/nerve pain meds-- which I didn't want to take. Acupuncture is a temporary numbing of the nerves in the area and I'm scared of paralysis, and from what I've known the chiropractor was the guy who just crackles, pops, and sends you on your merry way. Dr. Brian Bak is the real deal. It's hard to find passionate and compassionate people in consumer-facing fields every time you see them. (He doubles as a therapist so ya get a 2 for 1 deal when you come see him! Haha only kidding!) During the initial session, I have expressed a request for therapy geared towards active release therapy to rehabilitate my muscles and he has been very receptive to any request/feedback. I've been living with chronic pain now for almost 10 years and have been to many doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors and massage therapists. Some have helped a bit, some minimally and others were a waste of time. Every time I leave Dr. Bak's office I ask myself why I don't come more often. This evening was no different. I walked into the office in excruciating pain, probably a 9/10 and left feeling SO much better and able to drive home in minimal pain. I'm sure if I visited more often and dedicated more time to practice all of his recommendations, I'd be feeling even better! I have been working with Dr. Bak for nearly a year now, and he has made a significant positive impact on my health and well-being. Specializing in active release technique, Dr. Bak's work is far more comprehensive and effective than some traditional chiropractors I have seen. Under his care, I have gone from significant chronic back pain to now having periods of being pain-free. Brian Bak is amazing . I had so many problems but with his help i was able go back to work. He helped me with arm ,shoulder ,neck pain . This time i went with my lover back pain. Since my spine "specialist" recommended me to get steroid shot in my spine . I said NO and i decided to go see Brian one more time . He did magic and i left office without pain in my back.He explained me what exercises i should do to get stronger and feel better. He is amazing. This review is long overdue. I've been coming to Dr. Bak weekly for over half a year now and I've been quite happy with the results. I used to have these episodes with my lower back in which a seemingly random, non-strenuous movement would trigger incredible pain that would just put me out of commission. The pain was debilitating and would prevent me from being able to simply stand up straight. The best way to describe it would be a combination of back spasms and a pinched nerve. Well since coming to Dr. Bak, I haven't had a single episode. His active release therapy (ART) techniques are quite progressive and very effective. During our sessions he doesn't just focus on my back - he works my hips, legs as well as the little known, difficult to stretch, psoas muscle, which are all related to the lower back. I do still experience occasional tightness and discomfort during the week (not nearly as bad as before), but Dr Bak stresses stretching and strengthening between sessions. He even sends me great instructional videos so I can do them on my own. From my experience dealing with many prior injuries and ailments, the road to recovery isn't going to be resolved by one visit or one "magic pill." It's an ongoing process that requires involvement from both doctor as well as patient. Dr. Bak certainly does his part. He's experienced, very knowledgeable, an excellent communicator and just a super nice guy. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my experience at Bak Chiropractic. read more

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not a very typical Yelp user as much as I should be, but I just had to write about Dr. Brian Bak. Dr. Bak is a great ART (Active Release Therapy) practitioner. For those who are nervous about Chriopractic adjustments, (especially to the neck) this is a completely different technique that provides almost immediate relief from my neck, shoulder and back ailments by using gentle manipulation and pressure point focus techniques. I injured my back from lifting heavy things, and I've seen many doctors and physical therapists but Dr. Bak is the only one who could provide constant relieve for me. I felt the result just after 3 visits and now my back pain had reduced greatly. Dr. Bak is great because he believes the human body has a natural healing ability, and he's there to help and speed up the healing process. He's very nice and encouraging. I couldn't hold my baby before I started seeing Dr. Bak but now I can carry my baby around in the house and push him to the stores in a stroller. I feel so much better now, mentally and physically. I first saw Dr. Bak earlier this fall because I was looking for an Active Release practitioner to help my injured knee (patellar tendonitis). I am an avid runner (I enjoy running races at a fast pace) and I saw that Dr. Bak has a lot of experience working with athletes. After working with Dr. Bak, I now realize that he is indeed one of the best providers for athletes to see, and also that anyone could benefit greatly from his excellent hands-on work. I initially injured my knee back at the end of June, and after nearly two months of not being able to run at all and also having some pain while walking, I realized I needed more than the physical therapy that I was almost done with. I've had some good results with physical therapy for other issues in the past, but it didn't seem to be helping my knee very much - I knew something was missing. When I saw Dr. Bak, I realized immediately that I was right: there was a huge amount of tension in all the muscles surrounding my knee, as well as in the patellar tendon itself, that stretching and PT alone had done little to resolve. Dr. Bak really worked deeply on all those areas to release the tension in a way that I have only experienced with active release. After just a couple sessions with Dr. Bak, I was able to run again - what a relief! I still had to take it gradually for my knee to fully recover, and I would definitely advise everyone to listen to their body to avoid doing too much too soon, but the difference from seeing Dr. Bak was like night and day. I have gotten active release work done once before, on my shoulders, and while that was also very good, I am convinced (certainly from my own experience and also from looking at some of the other reviews here) that Dr. Bak is one of the best active release providers in the area, especially for athletes. In addition to the hands-on work, Dr. Bak is very knowledgeable and taught me how foam rolling and other types of self-massage that can be done at home are just as important (probably more so) as stretching.* He also prescribed some excellent strengthening exercises. Most ongoing issues involve significant tension held in the muscles. If you suspect this might be the case for you, go see Dr. Bak - he'll really work out that tension and you'll feel the difference immediately. And although fortunately my knee injury wasn't this serious, if you're at all considering surgery, I recommend seeing him even more since you may be able to avoid the need for surgery. * If you are interested in an alternative to static stretching to complement active release work and foam rolling, be sure to check out Hanna Somatics, another amazing approach I recently discovered. read more

HANDS DOWN the BEST ART(Active Release Technique) Chiropractic in NY!!!! I used to go to a few different ART practicing Chiros in Manhattan and not only did they charge me $200-250/ session but i didnt really see improvements w them....until ive read his reviews online and also on ART website! Im glad ive gone to him bc not only is he THE ONLY licensed in Queens to practice ART but he is currently offering crazy bargain deals where u buy a 10treatment package, you get one session free ONLY for $600! Thats what ive been buying! I have herniated disc on my lower back, torn left hip, and left shoulder where one day, i woke up w a very stiff back where i could NOT bend, trying to sit down or standing up was very difficult. Went to see him and he magically made my back to bend over again!!!!!!! Ive even met one of his patients while waiting to get seen by him that she is a professional runner and he has been doing wonders on her body, prepping her for races and sport massages thereafter! When I came to see Dr. Bak, I was in a lot of pain; hardly able to walk and stand up properly. I am very active and addicted to exercise and keeping active. After only a few treatments of him performing ART, I was walking with no discomfort and after only a few sessions, I was back to my normal exercise routine. I came to Dr. Bak by recommendation from my Crossfit coach. I was having a problem with a pinching tight feeling in my lower back when I did squats or lifted anything that was relatively heavy. I kept thinking there was something wrong with my back, but when I explained the situation to Dr Bak he told me it sounded like hip tightness in my IT band/ Psoas. I never would have thought this was the issue but during our session I realized how incredibly correct he was. I worked with Dr Bak for a few months and he was so helpful. Not only did I get the active release therapy from him but he sent me instructional videos for stretching and strengthening my weak points. He went above and beyond what I expected. Fast forward a few months later and I feel amazing. I learned so much from him about how my muscles work and how to help correct the problems myself. I am now able to maintain my flexibility in my hips and control the IT band/psoas tightness on my own for the most part. I go back to Dr Bak once in a while for what I call "Routine Maintenance". He is also one of the most friendly people I have ever met. He is talkative and kind, and always makes you feel comfortable. I initially came to Dr. Bak literally days before the California International Marathon in 2013. I was new to New York and literally didn't know anyone that could personally give me a reference for an ART practitioner. But as luck would have it I would never regret finding him on the ART website. I was able to quickly get in for an appointment right before my travel for the "big day". I had multiple problems with plantar fasciitis throughout my training and for a few years prior to that. I had been learning to run through the pain because I thought I was doing everything I possibly could. I remember telling him that I would probably suffer with PF for the rest of my life. Rolling my foot over tennis balls, Strasburg socks, icing, and my own creative foot massages were only temporary fixes to an ongoing problem. He told me that it was definitely something I wouldn't always have to deal with. I fully anticipated coming into the office and getting a quick ART session for the PF along with KT Tape and then I would quickly be on my way. Again, I thought this ART session would be another quick fix and would help me get through the California International Marathon that weekend. I told him of my future race plans which included a total of 3 marathons in 3 months followed by my first 50K approximately 2 months after that. I started receiving ART from him on a weekly basis where he really worked through the pain I was experiencing in my foot as well as the surrounding muscles. What struck me the most was a couple of things. He really took the time to work with me and spent at least 45 mins working through my problem areas. After every big event or even regular training run he asked me what issues I had and really worked to understand my issues so that we could work through them. Secondly, throughout the course of the next couple of weeks he gave me various strengthening/balancing exercises as "homework" to help improve flexibility and strength in my feet and the surrounding muscles. I also worked on balancing techniques at his suggestion to try to improve the strength and stability in my ankles. He stressed to me how important this was for running and that although the pain I felt was in my foot there could be other areas that were causing this pain. The videos he sent me also emphasized glute, quad, core, and hamstring strength. Never before had I seriously worked these areas. My main focus was always on running and then rehab for various injuries. I had only dabbled in strength exercises and didn't make it part of my regular routine. I was also unsure how exactly which areas I needed to work the most. I worked diligently on these exercises on a weekly basis. Within weeks I noticed a difference in how I felt on my runs. The plantar fasciitis pain completely subsided and I am happy to say I no longer experience issues with this at all. I set a new PR for myself at the CIM that weekend and beat my best time by about 30 mins. I went on to successfully complete (pain free) the Houston and Miami Marathons in January and February. In May 2014 I completed my first 50K in 6 hours and 33 minutes. This was all done with no pain whatsoever. I also felt fully recovered within days and it used to take me at least a week to recover. Dr. Bak has been an outstanding addition to my training routine and has helped me to surpass my goals while offering sound advice and treatment. To this day I am injury free. I train smarter and harder. I also trust that he will help me achieve my running goals. What's most important is that he is friendly, professional, and cares about the well-being of his patients. read more
