My husband and I love to stay at bed and breakfasts and have done so both here in the states and abroad. Many combine history with gracious hosting and delicious breakfasts. The Bailey House is no exception and in several respects, outshined any I recall.
On December 16, 2017, my dear mother, Daisy Nevels of Mount Orab, Ohio, passed away at the Villas of Georgetown. Not wanting to stay at a hotel, I googled bed and breakfasts and the Bailey House came up. My husband and I arrived from Pittsburgh on a Sunday and stayed until Friday. During this difficult time as we planned the funeral, Nancy was the quintessential host. She gave us the very large front room with adjoining bathroom. The room was complete with a desk so I was able to "set up shop" and complete paperwork, etc. The bathroom was also connected to a small bedroom which we used for one my sons. This small bedroom was Nancy's as a child and originally was the servant's quarters with the back stairs to the kitchen!
The breakfasts were amazing and brought us back to an earlier time where china, silver, and cloth napkins were used. As my mother was born in 1926, many of the customs and historical items we discussed were familiar to me and helped me in the mourning process. Nancy even made cinnamon toast and a country breakfast of eggs and biscuits just like my mom used to do.
We knew we wanted to return soon, but had no idea how soon that would be. We buried my mother on the 21st and 10 days later, my beloved father, Paul Nevels, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Villas. He did not want to ring in the 2018 New Year without his bride of 73 years.
Once again, we made the trek from Pittsburgh to rural Ohio and once again, Nancy was a ministering angel to us as we returned to the Bailey House to plan a second funeral. Even the cats, JR and Cato were a comfort to us as we have two cats ourselves and they made us feel we were home. Bailey, the Pomeranian, was an absolute delight as well. The animals stay out of your way if you want, but we loved them and even tried to find them at times. JR loves to sleep on the registers in the winter and believe me, make sure you have arm muscles if you try to lift her!
Nancy was accommodating and rearranged sleeping so we and several other family members could all stay at the Bailey House. It was so much more personal than staying at a hotel. All of the members enjoyed their stay and have vowed to return!
I had known Grant grew up in Georgetown, but was not cognizant of his connection with Nancy's ancestors and the Bailey House. We were able to learn some of it, but will have to go back under more favorable personal circumstances and tour the Grant house and learn more of Nancy's (and her husband Stan's) vast knowledge.
I highly recommend the Bailey House of Georgetown, Ohio. read more
