I do like Baguette du Monde. I've been going to these shops since they opened the first one in Birmingham a good few years ago. Since then, they've seemingly bred like rabbits and ended up all over the city. I'm reviewing this particular store as it's the one I pass on a daily basis for work, and where I'll nip into on the occasions I've had to skip breakfast.
When I first started going there, the main thing that appealed to me beyond the great quality of the food was the exceptional vegetarian selection. I could get my lunch there several days in a row and not get bored of eating the same old thing. Over the past five years or so, the quality of the bread has remained unchanged, but sadly the broad selection of fillings I so loved has gradually dwindled. What they have left is still great, but it seems like the company is going through an experimental period at the moment where they change the menu on week by week basis, usually at the cost of whatever I happen to want to order when I go in. First the crunchy veg went, and now you can't even get a decent cheese & pickle in some of their outlets (including the one I'm submitting the review against).
If it weren't for the erratic manner in which they maintain their menu selection, I'd have given this place an exceptional score. You can tell that they use high quality ingredients, and that the bread is fresh - and tasty! The price, too, is among the best in town. If it's a straight up baguette you're after, Baguette du Monde is pretty much where it's at. read more
