The only reason they are a 4 star vs a 5 star breakfast is because they ONLY take cash and you can't really sit down to eat there. There are tables there, but with the amount of people ordering, it's not really feasible to eat there. We stay in DC for two weeks every year and we ALWAYS go to Bagels Etc at least twice per visit. You'd better know what you want - the super efficient ladies behind the counter become agitated and annoyed when customers are confused or inquisitive. And you'd better get that bagel to go because there's very little seating. The value is extremely good. 5 dollars will get you a complete breakfast. But, that five dollars has to be cash, because they don't take credit/debit cards. So, I'm kind of torn whether to go 3 or 4 stars here. I really enjoy their Turkey Avocado sandwich. The bread is really unique to this shop - it is a soft flat bagel. Tons of fresh vegetables in the sandwich. Usually comes with a pickle and bagel chips, which they make themselves. It is delicious and great worth your money (less than $7 for a lunch in DuPont!) Just a tip - they also sell day old bagels for $1.50. I like to freeze them in my freezer and pop them in the toaster whenever needed and they'll taste just as good as fresh baked! I love this place. A coworker of mine brought in bagels from Bagels Etc. one morning, and after I had one, I knew I had to visit it soon. I've been there several times now, and I've never been disappointed. I've only had breakfast so far, but I'll be stopping in for lunch soon. This place is small and cash only, so be prepared. This must be a local favorite, I was visiting DC for the weekend and needed a quick breakfast close to my hotel. I was very surprised when I opened the door to this small place and it had a line at least twenty people long stretching the entire length of the building. The line went fast, the service is incredibly fast. They staff seemed to be very friendly with regulars. I ordered a sausage and egg sandwich on a bagel and I was a little let down that it was so dry. The place isn't the cleanliness location, but it's kind of charming. I absolutely love this place. First, the bagels. Yes, they are very doughy, probably best described as a solid medium-rare. They'll toast them up for you if you want, and that helps a bit, but trust me, you'll come to love these bagels as they are. All the standard selection of bagels, and all very well done. The everything is especially delicious--no one spice/seed overpowers another. Next, lunch time. Sandwiches galore! Turkey avocado on a bialy (cross between a pita and a bagel, superb) is about the most delicious thing you can ask for. Tons of other predefined sandwiches exist but you can also make up your own. And now, the service. Holy cow these people are amazing. After coming in maybe 3 or 4 times they recognize me and always give me a smile. Your first trip can be intimidating as these crazy Korean ladies move pretty fast. Just make sure you remember it's cash only (ATM in the store, and it only charges $1.50 for non-members) and you'll be fine. After a few more trips they will remember your order and, if you're lucky, start joking around with you. The place is a little small, but the morning rush is so much more fun when you are dodging around people with a hot coffee in your hand. Prices are fantastic: under $2 for a bagel w/ cream cheese. Sandwiches between $5-7, and they are generously sized. And by the way, they really mean the whole "Etc." thing. You can get anything from waffles to carrot cake to breakfast sandwiches to tuna melts to cigarettes. They also have several selections of coffee brews--standard diner quality stuff. The menu takes up the entire wall above the counter. If you are looking for a great family-run place that's friendly, cheap, and delicious, this is it! An opinion is an opinion and I will give you mine. Great bagels and really fast service. I think people are mistaking Korean efficiency for cold service. Its just a cultural thing. Even if the place is empty I've noticed they still do 10 things at once so they don't like to wait around while you read every last thing on the menu. This also comes in handy on the weekends when the place is packed and they are trying to get everyone their orders fast. Bagels Etc serves up by far the best bagel Ive had in DC with fast service, no frills, and a MASSIVE menu. A wait in the singular line that curves around to the kitchen is inevitable on a weekend morning, so be sure to grab a to-go menu to peruse while you wait. They'll make any sort of adjustment to sandwiches or salads on the menu, have reasonable prices, and the bagels are as fresh as possible. For a period of my teenage years I ate ONLY bagels for breakfast, lunch and dinner so I can confirm these bagels are great!! The deli sandwiches are to die for as well... I didn't know it was possible to dream of a tuna salad sandwich but this place made me do it! They also serve eggs and breakfast type foods all day, which is a major advantage in my eyes! ROACHES..... Ordered my food and spotted a roach. Kinda hard to see in the pic but I circled it for you to see. I told the staff but they acted as if they could not speak English when doing so. The lines are long, they don't accept credit cards (no signs up stating that they don't accept cards), when you do not have cash they direct you to the ATM where they charge you $1.50. The food is mostly precooked (trays at station) with the meats/eggs in them to make the sandwich process go faster. I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. read more
