Was in town for work. Usually don't have breakfast but decided to give this place a try. Best decision of my life. I've never had a bagel like the ones served here. Crispy yet fluffy and doughy. The creme cheese was rich and flavourful. The mocha was perfect. I ended up having breakfast there every day that week. If you're ever in Castlegar and need a coffee and a snack. The staff was courteous and inviting. I ordered an Italian soda... YUMM!! It was lovely and tasted awesome. It was also well mixed so that I didn't get bubbly water and then a mouthful of syrup which is commendable considering my love and experience withholding Italian sodas. Unlike Nelson, The Gar is dominated by chains and does not contain a good selection of independent cafes/eateries. Yes, they have a Timmy-Ho's, but this is no substitute for bakeries, mom n' pop coffeeshops, or idiosyncratic delis. Although it is in a strip mall itself, Bagels & Brew is probably the best place in Castlegar for fresh baked goods and espresso-based beverages. Husband and wife team Maria and James McFadden make everything from scratch, and they come from Winnipeg which has a long history of bagel and cream cheese production. I had a breakfast bagel here, with free range eggs and aged cheddar, and it is apparent that the bagels are boiled rather than steamed or (gasp) just plain baked. The prices are reasonable as well. My breakfast bagel and a large latte came to $7.80. If I'm ever back in The Gar or driving through I will definitely grab another b-fast bagel here, and a baker's dozen to go. read more

Went to get myself some borscht at B&B on Friday - thinking it was Saturday (they only serve it on weekends), and was initially disappointed that I couldn't have my borscht. But they were serving corn chowder, so I had some of that - and honestly, it was just as good as the borscht! I was very pleased, and glad that I'd mixed up my days in order to discover another favourite! read more
