It wouldn't be a trip to Oslo without visiting this historic bakery chain for some sweet pastries!…read moreOn our first full day, we grabbed a couple treats before a walk down to the Oslo Opera House. + Kanelboller (Cinnamon Bun): The exterior was coated in a sticky caramelization while the interior stayed wonderfully soft with a delightful cinnamon flavor. I wouldn't call it the best cinnamon roll I've ever had, but in terms of taste, it was reminiscent of monkey bread, which I always enjoy. Since it wasn't too sweet, this was a great morning snack! + Skolebrød (School Bread): I'm not a huge fan of coconut, but this was so good! The creamy custard in the pastry's center tasted similar to a vanilla pudding, surrounded by a sugary frosting topped with coconut. I loved the notes of cardamom as well. This was sweeter than expected, but I truly enjoyed every bite and could have eaten that custard by the spoonful. I highly recommend stopping by to try some traditional Norwegian pastries rooted in recipes passed down since 1894! It may be a chain, but don't let that deter you!

The cream wasn't overly sweet and held its shape inside the donut. The chocolate layer on the outside was a hard shell, not a wet layer, so it didn't ooze off. And the dough was chewy and perfectly airy. (AKA the holes in the dough were not too close or too far apart.) They also make the best apple frittatas. So much apple in each one. Even the staff was amazing. All residents of other countries coming together to work in harmony and happy to talk with the tourists (like me.) They gave great suggestions, let us use their bathroom, and made a special design in my latte...when I challenged their skills. Seriously fun crew. And seriously good donuts.

All of their bread is made with sourdough - even the sweet buns! They let their doughs mature for a very long time (a full 40 hours for the breads), which makes for the tastiest and chewiest bread I have ever tried. Using sourdough in sweet baking is also something I have never come across before, but it makes the buns extremely moist. On my first visit, I tried the white sourdough and egg salad sandwich, which was freshly made and delicious, the sourdough bread with pumpkin seeds, the cardamom sweet bun, the blackcurrant sweet bun, the almond and chocolate sweet bun, a lemon poppy seed muffin and the cream cheese cookies (no, not all in one sitting - I had to take som of it home ;). The muffin itself would have been worth the visit, as it was the fluffiest and yet most succulently flavourful muffin I have tasted! I also had a coffee and a carrot, orange and ginger juice, which was vibrant and fresh. In addition, the staff at Handwerk are extremely friendly, and the manager, Pontus, was more than willing to share his insight about sourdough baking and offered me tips on how to improve my sourdough. I will most definitely be stopping by Handwerk whenever I am in the area, as this is my new favourite bakery!
