It's a pain to have to give a crappy review to a place that's always been a favourite. Arthur's has…read morealways delivered a decent lunch at a good price. After years of going in that has changed for the first time. As with everything these days the prices have crept up, especially in terms of the lunch specials. OK, that's to be expected these days. But there a 'meal deal' in there now for £12 or so! Not long ago that was a basic restaurant price, the specials are now around the £5 mark and gone is the awesome £3. I could live with that, but I got the club sandwich. It was tiny and bland.... With a club you expect the double layers... not in this case... just the 2 rounds of bread, and they were very poorly filled at that. I'll definitely be back... I won't give up on a stalwart like this after 1 bad experience... but with the hike in prices there needs to be an understanding there be a hike... and certainly not a drop, in delivery!

As eluded to Arthur's is in a really handy location beside Montgomery Street Car park and only a short dander from Victoria Square.s iWith loads of neighboring offices I suspect Arthur's is rammed in the morning and at lunch time but luckily for me I visited around 2:30pm and there were only a few other customers. As soon as I walked in I was asked 'what I would like?' and to be honest I hadn't even worked that out in my head yet so I just blurted out Americanno! I like the prompt sty;e of the staff in here - no messing about - gimmie your order! The coffee was great - very strong which is just what I needed before a meeting. I even got myself a wee pecan slice as there was a lonely one left in a basket just staring at me at the counter. So I had to, you know yourself! Anyway, it's a big old thumbs up from me for Arthur's and who knows it might even get that extra star when I sit in!

We hopped on Yelp and saw that French Village was just down the street, so we just walked on over. For a Saturday morning it was quite busy, but we were lucky to get a table for 4 people right away. They have a pretty standard breakfast menu with your typical french toast, pancakes, bagel, hash, scrambled eggs, etc. Between the four of us, we pretty much ordered the whole menu, which was great because that means I got to try a bit of everything. For myself I ordered the bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. It was good, but I don't think it was exactly what I was feeling that morning. I really enjoyed bites of their raspberry & white chocolate pancakes and frech toast though. I'd definitely recommend that if you've got a sweet tooth. On top of that, we got an assortment of different coffees and smoothies at our table. I went for a soy milk latte for myself and a strawberry banana smoothie. Both hit the spot perfectly. Service was a little spotty. Our waters were never really refilled (and on a hungover morning, endless water is a necessity), and our server looked a bit angry to be there. The manager came around to see how everything was doing though, which was great! They have a bakery on the other side of the restaurant (where you go to pay), and have an assortment of macarons, muffins, and other baked goods. Before we left, we got a small box of macarons to share and they were lovely! I can't remember all the flavours we got, but everything I tried was delicious. If you're in the University area, definitely a good spot to check out for a nice breakfast.

It has just opened up so it isn't as busy as you would expect for a crackin wee cafe in the middle of a studenty area. The prices here are pretty standard. You will pick up coffee and a sandwich for about £5 or £6, which is what you would expect in this part of town. The service was excellent the time I was in. It wasn't that busy so they took the time and extra care with my order that I really appreciated. I'd definitely recommend this place, just don't expect it to be too banging.

But one thing is for sure The Garden café is cashing in on their love for the dark stuff, coffee not Guinness. I went in today and instead of the packed coffee shop I expected to find I instead entered a morgue with one pensioner pushing around a sausage on his plate while watching that cheap David Dickenson replacement on Bargain Hunt. It was super quiet, the staff were txting and enjoying the antiques on TV. But this meant I was able to get a coffee and go. I did just that, I had planned to stick around and kill some time while waiting for a train but I decided the platform was more exciting than this place. On the plus side a large coffee to go was only £1.70 and I was sipping it all the way to Bangor while trying to look sophisticated while passing through Cultra. The service was good too, despite their boredom the staff were attentive and I got served in a flash. I just wonder what is going wrong in the Garden Café?
