However, the true beauty in this home was not the home or antique pieces, Bernette, the owner, is the true gem when you stay at Shadowlawn. She goes above and beyond for her guests and truly cares for the people staying in her home. Mississippi is known for hospitality and Bernette epitomizes the spirit of hospitality in Mississippi. When you talk with Bernette, it is like talking with a friend you have known for years. The breakfast she makes is five-star quality and made from scratch. The rooms were very comfortable and well-designed and decorated. We slept like babies. We also were staying during a MSU gameday weekend, and the rates for our stay were great, especially considering the alternatives were very pricey and do not come with Bernette and her amazing personality and attitude. We highly recommend anyone visiting Columbus or Starkville to stay with Bernette at Shadowlawn. We are already looking forward to our next visit to Columbus because we already know where we will be staying, which is Shadowlawn. Why go anywhere else?

The Monte Cristo is a must try. Lots of personal attention and engaging conversation - felt like being around family. Looking forward to our next visit.

I've stayed here when it was Comfort Inn and several times since it became Quality Inn. There are…read morenicer hotels in town, but this one has been consistently good enough for me. It's pretty much like Quality Inns all over the U.S. Same carpet, same great beds (down comforters rock!), same sink, same toiletries. The price seems a little steep, especially with the $25 a night pet fee added in, but there are some really bad areas of town and this one is clean and safe, so it's worth it. The Internet is fast and reliable throughout the hotel. It's on the main drag of town, so there are plenty of places to eat and shop. There is a Waffle House and Chinese place within walking distance. There's also a great steak place -- Ole Hickory -- and a great Mexican place -- Mi Hacienda -- across the street. Front desk staff is nice, and the housekeeping staff doesn't wake you up at the crack of dawn runbling their carts down the sidewalk, banging on your neighbors' doors and yelling, "HOUSEKEEPING!" loud enough to wake the dead over in Friendship Cemetery. They allow pets, and there is a nice place to walk dogs in the back of the property. I don't recommend staying on the side with the Chinese restaurant. Nor sure why the traffic was noisy over here, but every morning there were large trucks and various banging noises. Stay on the mall side. Much quieter. As an added plus, they have a bathroom in the lobby. Laugh if you like, but if you've traveled a long distance without a restroom stop, then sometimes that extra few minutes of waiting to check in can be excruciating. The older I get, the more I appreciate silly things like this.

But they dropped the ball this time so I had to say something. There was no coffee in the lobby with breakfast today, and they had replaced the corned beef hash and breakfast potatoes they always served with scrambled eggs and frozen sausage. Sorry folks, I may have to look elsewhere.

Staff was nice when we arrived and when we checked out the next morning. Hotel was affordable and compared to Starkvegas being overpriced bc of MSHA football championship. I'd stay here again if need be but I'd definitely look for something slightly better before I book. There was trash under the bed and we found our door sign to sleep in under the bed, well pinched between the mattress and wall but I found it while looking under the bed. Also, there no soap or shampoo directly in the shower so you'll have to grab the one from the bathroom counter to bring in with you but there's no place to set it down in the shower other than the floor.

The reason I give 2 stars because we had clean sheets and towels. The shower curtain smelled like mildew and there was a large amount of mold growing on the wall beside our bed which we didn't find till later. When my husband went to tell the lady up front about the mold, she didn't apologize at all and just said they would take care of it... the area around the hotel is a bit sketchy, so me and my kids felt a little uncomfortable and unsafe. The breakfast was very sad looking. The ham was paper thin and the eggs were uncooked and powdery. Unfortunately we won't be using La Quinta for our trips anymore. Felt like we were put in a motel sadly.
