Double Bacon Cheeseburger and Onion Rings
    Ben B.

If I wasn't planning to go here for lunch, I'd never knew it existed. BackRoadZ seems to intentionally hide itself from public view. We pulled in and parked in the lot, which was empty except for what I assume was an employee's pickup truck in the back corner. The menu has a typical collection of hamburgers and chicken (burgers?), fries, and onion rings. I was hoping for something novel or fun, but it was all quite run-of-the-mill. For example, their "spicy" burger uses pepper-Jack instead of American cheese - craaaazy! There isn't any punctuation in the descriptions of each item, so plan to use your imagination. Service was helpful and friendly - probably the highlight of our visit. We ordered and sat in the patio area (the only seating available) to eat. The burgers were okay. I appreciate that they're not pre-formed frozen patties like most places with 30 miles of here. That said, I regret getting a double-patty because the burger was over-cooked, under-seasoned (which is saying a lot because I prefer less salt on most things), and it was rather dry despite the generous mayo and ketchup. The breading on my onion rigs refused to stay on, so I did my best to gather the brokenness in my fingers to eat them. Nothing was gross, but nothing was really good either. I'd stop again if starving while passing through the area, but I wouldn't plan to return.

The building is a mobile home painted green. The food was a bit pricey. I had a cheeseburger and fries. The burger meat could use a bit of seasoning. All the ingredients were fresh I was just hoping for a bit more seasoning. The fries were perfect. And the service was spectacular! I loved the covered patio allowing for no one to get rained on while ordering or eating, especial if you can't go inside, which you can't.

View from the road. Easy to get in back and park.

A local mentioned this "hole in the wall" burger joint. Ohhh my. Easily worth a side trip! Simply awesome burgers, crinkle cut fries, and Tillamook Ice Cream shakes and treats. I had a regular burger (w/ grilled onions and xtra pickles) combo, and upgraded to a 16oz (Marion Berry!) shake. My sweetie had the Swiss mushroom bacon burger. Yuuuuuummmmmm! Quick, friendly service, accurate order fulfillment. BTW the bag of fries was surprisingly humongous. This Fry Fiend was quite happy :)

Great atmosphere, good food. Enjoyed our visit. We had good conversations with other clientele that also seemed to be quite happy.

Good food, cost is a little high but it is everywhere. No inside seating so it's on the deck or in the car. Good milkshakes and cones.

I'll start this review off by saying that I love Cathlamet. It's a quaint little historic town…read morewith a rich history and really nice people. I've been visiting here a dozen times a year for four decades. There are a few eateries here. Many seem to come and go although there are a couple that have survived the test of time. RM38 is a newcomer... used to be in a small building with VERY limited hours. I gather their main biz was brewing craft beer for a very small clientele of businesses and the "saloon" was mostly a side hustle to help pay the rent. So I see they moved into new digs down at the marina. I won't take off any stars for the following since this seems to be their new business model: Offering uber-expensive, skimpy portions of not especially tasty food targeted to yuppies who have more money than brains. Suffice to say that you won't see many Bikers hanging out here. The good: Their patio has a nice river view and a pleasant breeze. Sitting out there enjoying a cold one on a hot Summer day is very pleasant. And during the Fall too so long as it's not raining. People complain about the lack of parking which is not an issue when you show up on a motorcycle. But there are LOTS of places to park although you may have to walk a few yards... you poor darlings. Staff is less than amazing but they are always courteous towards me. I suppose I am no more their dream customer than they are my dream hangout. But Bikers tend to be very generous tippers so they might want to keep that in mind. There's one long-established watering hole in Cathlamet but it's a dark, indoor venue. I like it there and it's more of a dive bar with very good food. The thing about Cathlamet is that if you are just an occasional visitor you have many options of where to stop for a meal and/or drink and never get bored. There's also a few good places at the other end of the ferry ride in Westport, Oregon. Hard to say how long RM38 will stay in business. I'm actually surprised that they lasted in their original location for so long considering that they were only open for a few hours during the weekend. It would be great if they quit pretending to be an upscale eatery and instead focused on providing a good value, tasty, filling meal for the money. Again, no minus stars for that but until new management comes along and makes some changes it will just be a pint or two for me and i'm on my way. Of course as always YMMV.

We stopped in on a lazy Wednesday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. The waitress was friendly and quick. She brought water and menus, and came back to take our order in timely fashion. I ordered the Turkey Bacon Swiss special with tater tots, my husband got the Patty Melt with tots. The food came quickly and was nice and hot. The sandwiches were grilled perfectly and chock full of meat! I could only eat half of my sandwich, it was filling. The tots were crisp and crunchy, but soft in the middle, as tots should be! My husband said the Patty Melt was delicious. He was pleased with the quality of the burger inside. We were both well pleased! The bathrooms were also very spacious and clean! That's always a good sign, if you ask me! There is also a nice parking area right out in front of the restaurant. Don't hesitate to swing on into the Duck Inn if you happen to be going by. It'll make your belly happy.

It's mostly fried food. We ordered prime rib and it was thin, very little fat on it so minimal flavor and way overcooked. They said they basically cooked it in the au jus which is not a good way to cook prime rib. It was clearly not a high grade cut. I want this place to be good so bad! I really wish they would seek some guidance to make this place a success. It could really be a destination if they put a little effort into it

Lots of things... * Staff is REMARKABLY friendly and personable * They are equally attentive and professional * The patrons were awesome, seriously. I came here alone, and no fewer than three people, each in completely different parties, approached and engaged me in conversation. This seemed like a bunch of regulars who welcome newcomers as family. The menu is much larger than expected for a bar. I opted for the pulled pork sliders, and they were FAR better than expected. The rolls were the most surprising part, they were fantastic! I don't know if they're baked on-site, but they're definitely not typical "get the job done" fare, they were superb. "Slider" also seemed to be a bit misleading because they're so generously stuffed with pork and cole slaw that they're closer to a full-sized sandwich. Prices belie the quality and portion sizes (much lower prices than I'd expect). The only minor gripe is that there are not a lot of good seats for seeing bands perform. The bar area is narrow and long, which doesn't lend itself well to seeing performances, but I was still able to do so, and the friendliness of the staff and other patrons (again, AMAZING surprise) really seemed to make up for this.
