I went here with high expectations, only to be let down with all the food, had rib tips that were over cooked and some of the toughest things I've ever ate. Baked beans had no flavor whatsoever. Seasoned fries were about the only thing that couldn't be messed up. BBQ sauces are some of the worst I've had, they All taste the same. My husband loved the catfish sandwich. It was hot and flavorful the entire time. He said the tarter sauce was different with a little kick. He had loaded fries with it. The atmosphere is pretty loud & a bit dark The food is better than average & fresh The wait staff is friendly, attentive & knowledgeable The prices are reasonable.....mostly One of my kids got the bacon cheese fries appetizer as his meal. For $10, this was very basic. Fries,elated cheese, salt & pepper. I would have liked to have seen some sour cream & chives, but nope. My other kid got pulled pork dinner with green beans & fried potatoes for his meal. The potatoes were consistently soft & not over done. The green beans were very tasty & the pulled pork was plentiful, juicy & very tasty. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw. The slaw was crisp,creamy & sweet with just a hint of vinegar. The pork on the sandwich had some sort of sauce already in it and it was a different consistency than the pulled pork on the dinner platter. Overall, she enjoyed it. Their tabletop BBQ sauces are Honey sweet and Bold & spicy. The sweet has quite a bite of vinegar albeit a sweet sauce. The bike & spicy left a subtle hint of heat as it coats your throat. It wasn't overly spicy, though. I enjoyed one of their signature cocktails, the Maker's Manhattan. It had a generous pour of Maker's Mark Bourbon with a slightly sweet mixer. I had the smoked salmon, green beans & their homemade applesauce. The salmon had a nice smoke to it, but it was a little dry. A wonderful lemon-caper sauce accompanied I'm the salmon and it was very good. It's definitely countered the dryness of the fish and when put on a thin portion of the salmon, the sauce overpowered it. The applesauce was thick, sweet and had great spice to it. Our server, Crystal, equated it to more like apple pie filling than applesauce and she's not wrong. The cheddar herb biscuits & apple butter that each table is served seemed like an odd combination but it works. The apple butter has a strong clove presence but it was good. (I don't care for clove). We were seated pretty quickly for a Friday night. Our food, once ordered, was in front of us in about 10 minutes. We'll make our way back here. read more

Had heard about the new place in Lebanon to get some BBQ and decided to try it after getting the tree. This location has a nice setup and plenty of TVs to watch some sports. The food has a usual BBQ price point that you see around central Indiana. The kids catfish was good, the rolls they give you and corn bread style pudding were also good. The pulled pork, ribs were average and the brisket looked more like pulled pork on my plate but when I walked out someone had brisket that looked different. The food comes out pretty fast and I would try it again to see if eating at 4pm was just the reason. read more

Tried a BBQ place that has brisket. No smoke flavor and greasy. The pulled pork want to bad, just a lack of flavor. The green beans had nothing. My wife got the chicken sandwich, but they don't have a honey mustard for it. The fries were nothing but salt. We waited for our waitress, needed refills. Our other side of corn pudding was burnt on the bottom. We'll try this again. As once in a while there are mistakes or Off Days, so quitting on somewhere because of one day isn't right. read more

Sorry to say I was disappointed at this restaurant. I had wanted to go since they opened. The front end staff was doing everything from seating, greeting, serving and busing tables and lunch time was busy! The atmosphere was warm, friendly and inviting. Hannah was our server and she was great! The biscuits were an interesting combination cheddar herb served with apple butter. I ordered the pulled pork lunch with a side of cold slaw. The pork was fine although I would have liked a lesson on the flavors of the different sauces. The bun that the pork was on was hat and stale. The slaw I tried but didn't eat. Ok not sure where to start but the waitress screwed up our 2 orders out of 3. We orded brisket diner plat plus 1/2 rack of ribs and only ribs came out and bisket no where to be found. Order 12 wings and only 6 wings came out ! One waitress told us it's in the counter and she will bring it right over but of course not. Our attend waitress came and i told her the missing orders and she gave me attitude! May be she's having a bad day but i don't think i deserved an attitude and hence wrote the review. So much more than BBQ! Though, the bbq was top notch! I had the catfish, corn pudding and coleslaw and I have to say it's probably the best fried catfish I've ever eaten! My wife had the pulled pork, potato salad, and southern style green beans. All really good! We sampled off of each other's plates, so we're got to taste everything. We were too full for dessert.... but we went ahead and ordered the butter cake(topped with ice Cream)... Ridiculously good!! Backroads will become a regular thing for us! The staff was very friendly and helpful. I thought it was strange that my server recommended essentially all the *non* BBQ options, but tried the BLT and mac and cheese on her recommendation. The BLT was worse than average - good thick bacon, but wimpy lettuce and tomatoes and bread. The mac and cheese was bad, unless you're looking for Kraft. I liked the cheddar muffins as a starter. So I don't know how this reflects on the place overall... if I go back, I'll try the BBQ. read more

Very good! Opened a few months ago I believe and we found it pretty easy to get off and on the highway for a quick bite to eat here. Seemed like they were still working out some kinks but overall good food and atmosphere. I would definitely go back and recommend it to all. Took family to backroads tonight for the first time. The place was nice on the inside. What you would consider normal for a BBQ spot. We had to wait about 10 minutes to sit down. They came to our table and gave us very good rolls with exceptional apple butter. Seriously the apple butter was fantastic. We wanted to try a little of all the meats so I got a pick two and so did my wife. We ordered different things because there were four choices. My daughter got the ribs. My son got the chicken tenders. All the food came out and it looked great. I got smoked turkey and Texas sausage and my wife got beef brisket and pulled pork. We split it up and tried everything. The food needed a little salt but tasted very good. Probably the thing we liked the least was the smoked turkey but it still had a good flavor. But there is only so much you can do to turkey so I expected that. I had cole slaw and ranch potato salad and they were both excellent. My wife had Mac and cheese and it was very good. My daughter's ribs were good. Their two bbq sauces were good. It just depends on what you like. We ordered their butter cake with cinnamon ice cream. Wow it was very good. Prices are what I would consider average for a place like this. All the food was great and we took some home with us as well. We will definitely return to this place again and again. Only negative we had was the food comes out on a metal platter lined with a wax paper lining. The lining broke apart after a while and we had to watch we didn't pick up paper with our food. Backroads BBQ off I65 in Lebanon, IN was terrific! From their delicious cheddar biscuits served with apple butter to their loaded chili to their bourbon baked beans and of course their delicious pulled pork served alongside their three house made bbq sauces (sweet, bourbon based and mustard based) every bite was a delight! Easily the best BBQ in Lebanon. If you've been to a city bbq then you pretty much know what the experience is like here. The food is comparable as well, though I think the sides are much better here. The cheddar biscuits and apple butter are pretty great. The bbq itself seems a bit on the fatty/greasy side, but that could have just been the batch we got. Was still quite good. Also having fried catfish on the menu automatically gets bonus points. If you live in Lebanon then this the best BBQ around, and a really nice place to eat at. Even if you're down in Whitestown or Zionsville and you're tired of City BBQ, this place is worth the ten minute drive north to check out for something a little bit different. read more
