We went to Backdraft for dinner on our way to Westmoreland Players. I had the delmonico steak blackened which was cooked perfectly a little salty but tender and juicy. It came with crisp green beans which had bacon and onion. Cooked just like I like. Service was prompt even though all the tables were full. We have always had good food. read more

Very rude bartender. First bar I've ever been to and have been treated like garbage. Worst experience ever that I've had as a patron. He said of my fiancé, "she raised her eyebrows and because of her mouth and I won't serve her". She brought a basically empty seltzer beer can into the bar and he freaked out at us and she lifted her eyebrows in shock at his rudeness. Could have just said, "hey, can't bring that it in here" and thrown it away then let it go. However he had to be extremely rude and continued badgering her from a distance from behind the bar and said he wouldn't serve her (we were seated at a table and we could hear it from a distance). Could have at least been civil, I understand there are rules, but at least be a decent human about it. Sometimes it is just better to forgive and forget. Server (not bartender) said, "I told her she couldn't have that drink"... we as a group of 6 never heard her tell her that. Appears there is a major miscommunication or lack of between the bartender and server. We are from Mississippi and there we are allowed to bring a drink from other establishments. We tried explaining this, however, no forgiveness from them. Didn't phase the bartender one bit. Lost our families business that is from here. Very disappointed in the lack of dialogue. Cancelled that meal order that we placed real quick. read more

Crab cakes are the way forward here. No filler. Not the best in the world but a decent meal nonetheless. I ordered the new york strip (and stole my girl's crabcake) which was below average. Very tough and felt 'from frozen'. I'd like to see this place around closing time on a busy Friday night. I get the sense it would be a riot. read more

I'm a weekender at the Northen Neck and have been to Backdraft about three or four times now - always for lunch. There are two sides to this true "hole in the wall" establishment. One side is the bar where smoking is allowed and the other is the dining room which is non-smoking. My guess is that the "good times" are had here at the bar on nights and weekends - not in the dining room! I have only been in the dining room. We are usually the only ones in there - once or twice there has been one other table in the dining room. Crab cake sandwich and shrimp or oyster po'boys are the best things we have had on the menu so far. Fries and onion rings aren't bad. On our last visit I tried the grilled chicken sandwich! Don't do it. It was two flat pieces of chicken breast that were cooked to death and were like pieces of leather. No taste and could hardly be chewed. No hot sauce, lettuce, tomato or mayo was going to help that sandwich! I stand by the place despite the attempt at the chicken sandwich. As grubby as it is - it's kind of a fun atmosphere. Been living in and around maryland for 14 years. This place has by far the best crab cakes I've had in that time. The best. The location itself is good a restaurant with a firehouse themed bar. We ate in the bar the service was good, the atmosphere reminded me of local places I grew up eating at in pittsburgh. I can't wait to come back and can't recommend it enough. read more

Just the worse service ever. Went with a group, we had to sit in the bar area which by the way they allow smoking. I thought it was illegal to smoke in bars or restaurants in Virginia. Waited over 45 minutes, still no food. Four people at our table got served, we watched them eat and still no food. Other patrons who came in after us received their orders while we were still waiting. Paid our drink bill and left. Sorry Backdraft you lost us as customers who live in the area. read more

As weekenders down on the Northern Neck we tend to not go out much once we are down here but we really enjoy a Sunday brunch/lunch excursion to Backdraft: super nice staff, $2 bloody mary's and draft beers and half price burgers. Yes, the place is cigarette stinky even though the dining room is divided from the bar, but everything else makes up for it. The grill cheese sandwich rocks too. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. The service was terrible. I walked into the dining room and there was no host to be found so I made my way to the bar which, as other reviewers have mentioned, allows smoking. The place was almost completely empty on a Saturday night. The bartender seemed uninterested in taking our order and our food took almost 45 minutes. I got the crab cake sandwich, which was awful. Tasted like a microwavable veggie burger. Totally not worth it. Almost everybody sitting at the bar worked there and our bartender literally stood at the end of the bar with her phone out, talking to her friends. It was beyond annoying considering how poor the service was and how slow our food came out. After we paid our tab, and left a pretty nice tip considering how bad the service was, the employees mocked my boyfriend's appearance (to his face). Overall, I will never return and will never recommend this place to anybody I care about. The food and service suck and the employees are a bunch of rude hillbillies. read more

My boyfriend and I eat here all the time. They have amazing food with great prices to go along with it. The service is great and the staff is always friendly. I order the same thing every time, their chicken cheesy steak sub and fries, and it just seems to get better every time! And their burgers are better than any place I've had before, along with a good variety of food. Especially during the evenings on a Friday or Saturday when they have a band playing, the atmosphere is just to die for. Definitely recommending stopping in and getting a bite to eat!! read more

Absolutely terrible customer service. Surly management that is unwilling to please its customers. We ordered food that never arrived despite bringing it to the attention of its management. They also allow smoking on its premises, which is a flagrant violation of Virginia law. If I could give a negative rating, I would. The worst experience I have EVER had @ a dining establishment in Virginia. Unfortuntely, we took out my in-laws for their 61st aniversery. They wanted to go back after several years away. With no handicapped parking, we ended up parking @ the bar entrance. We then had to go through to the "non-smoking" section. It is now against health code to have indoor smoking. Anyway, they "tried" to accommodate us by serving us entries and "specials". It was afternoon on a Sunday. We ordered broiled scallops, but got fried. The blackened medium rare tuna was rubbed with some seasoning, cold and uncuttable. Forget hot and tender! We were then made to feel we had done something wrong. Well, we had! We went to Backdraught in Kinsale, Va.! I don't recommend this to anyone & will NEVER go back! read more
